Btw, I got in trouble for yelling "ARE YOU S***ING ME?!?!?!" in front of my 4-year-old nephew when Apes lost the Visual Effects award to Hugo last night.
That was my reaction to Gary Oldman loosing. When is that poor man going to finally be recognized? One of the most talented, versatile actors in the world and he has never won.

The Oscars wouldn't know good special effects if it bit them in the ass. They made that lame bomb of a movie with CGI polar bears win for visual effects.

I'm not sure what that even means.

On a certain level, no, a Best Picture winner is going to have to feature some strong acting performances, good cinematography, and a well respected screenplay. OTOH, I'd hardly call Silence of the Lambs, No Country for Old Men, or even The Departed "safe" and "non-edgy". I'd hardly call Slumdog Millionaire "white" either.

He wasn't predicted to win though, so it wasn't a surprise.

I was thrilled Jean Dujardin won. He was amazing.

Also, as far as this year...having a silent film and a movie like Tree of Life nominated for best picture this year was definitely different than the normal 'safe' nominees too.

Jean Dujardin is adorable how can you hate him winning? I don't want to see The Artist but I begun to like him solely based on his award show performances.

The Artist is going to be a hard movie for me to give a go because last time I was told by the awards shows that a movie that I wasn't interested in was great I got burned by the boring, ugly looking pointless ass kissing "royals are awesome and better and more interesting than us peasants fest" known as "The King's Speech." **** that wildly overrated piece of fluff...Now that I got that angry rant out of the way...

It's fine if you want to keep defending the Oscars Evil Twin but I do see a problem with them even if you don't. I do think that they almost always pick the wrong and safest film possible even if you don't.

True.

The polar bears from the Coca Cola commercials looked better.

Guess they just liked the retro feel and look to it. Which is in keeping with the "good ol' days" nostalgia theme last night....a silent movie and a kids' movie about Golden Age Jules Verne-style sci-fi sweep; geezers like Meryl Streep and Christopher Plummer snag Oscars; Billy Crystal comes back; the "filler" between awards presentations was full of nostalgic reminiscing and old movie homages.....hell, even Billy Crystal made multiple joke references to how old and stale the thing has gotten.

lol. She does look too thin because it looks un-natural. I honestly find that guys post to be highly insulting. There are plenty of actresses who are as thin as Jolie and people don't bring them up because unlike her they don't look sick.

Lol, nice one. Still, the guy pretty much had the same smirk for majority of the movie and the only thing that truly wowed from his acting was his dancing.

Way I see it is, this year wasn't really safe. But the presentation was incredibly safe (right down to the choice of host, who I found as always to be delightful and charming...but I doubt one can argue that he wasn't exactly cutting edge) as were the choice in winners. Aside from Streep was there a single upset? And I have difficulty truly calling a Meryl Streep Oscar win an "upset." There was no major shake up, no long shot winner. These awards were being called from January on with no shift in the perceived leaders. It was both a safe year...yet not. Kind of the opposite of last year where the nominees with a couple exceptions were very safe and the presentation was incredibly unconventional.

Speaking of body image, I brought this up last night but it got lost in the shuffle as it was right as the show was starting:

What if Billy Crystal made his Jonah Hill joke about Melissa McCarthy? Could you imagine the hell that would be brought down upon him and the Academy. But it is okay to make that joke about Hill? I call double standard.

Since 2000 you've had Gladiator, LOTR, Departed, No Country for Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, The Hurt Locker and now The Artist win best picture. I wouldn't say any of those are safe, Oscar bait films.

In fact out of all of those films The Artist is probably the least Oscar bait. It isn't heavy and self important. It's light and breezy and charming. It's anti-Oscar bait.

I agree, it is a double standard. The weight joke was mean and uncalled for and shouldn't have been directed at anyone. BTW, why didn't Billy mention his own plastic, botoxed face?

Interesting, before Christopher Plummer, it's been 19 years since a Canadian actor has won an Oscar in one of the normal acting categories. Before that, it was Anna Paquin for the Piano, but Anna considers herself a New Zealander actually, so before her you have to go back to the 1940s.

My opinion isn't changing. We should just agree to disagree.

I think that the Oscars are boring too old fashion and only make slightly interesting films win when they are forced to and you don't. It's not a big deal we just have different opinions.

Yeah, on the other hand, someone like Jean Dujardin won it in his first nomination for the Oscar. Some beginners have all the luck.

Loving homage to Hollywood. I think there's some Oscar bait there even when there are not mentally challenged characters or Vietnam.

Maybe. Or maybe the director just wanted to make a love letter to his favourite era in cinema? And made a very good film? Inglorious Basterds was pretty blatantly a tribute and homage to older cinema, doesn't mean it's Oscar bait.

"Oscar bait" says to me a film that is made with the motive of getting Oscars in mind. Not just making the best film you can.

And now for talk that most of Superhero Hype doesn't give a crap about, the fashions:

I was disappointed that Emma Stone wore Nicole Kidman's old dress.

I was disappointed that Jessica Chastain wore Beyonce's old dress except flowy.

Geez did none of these women's people notice the similarity between their dresses and the a fore mentioned ones?
