I would've taken out Rise of the Guardians and put in ParaNorman. I think both Frankenweenie and ParaNorman deserved a nod. I'm getting tired of seeing CGI animated films, they all are starting to look the same. I'd prefer we see more stop motion animation or traditional animation.

The likability of McGregor and Blunt elevates it but I personally just found it average.

Yeah, i agree. It was all right, but i'm kinda surprised to see them nominated. I expected to maybe see Ewan in the supporting actor category but with The Impossible instead. He seems to be getting some buzz with that one after Jolie hosted a screening party to promote the movie and Ewan's performance in it: http://www.awardsdaily.com/blog/2012...he-impossible/

Zero Dark Thirty has gotten insanely good reviews. Bigelow's direction has been particularly praised. I know she just won 3 years ago, but if she is deserving so be it. Jessica Chastain is supposed to be fantastic in her role.

I've only seen The Master, Life of Pi, and Lincoln so far. I'm going to catch up before the year ends.

That was great.

I have yet to see Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty or Les Mis, but I think these are excellent filmic lists. I know some on this site will be disappointed TDKR was snubbed and I do think it is actually strangely underrated for being inferior to TDK, but really this year is way too good for it to compete in a 5-slot category. Maybe 10, but the Academy will never give it its due. And I enjoyed The Master, but more on a technical level in terms of cinematography and in its amazing acting. It didn't come together as well as TWB did five years ago though, I am afraid.

Now television is another matter. They completely dropped the ball when they nominated THE NEWSROOM for Best Drama series and snubbed Game of Thrones. I watch both and enjoy both, but The Newsroom is a schmultzy, soapy mess that is held together by an underutilised cast and some occasionally hilarious dialogue. Quit trying to be the first to recognize new shows if they aren't that good HFPA!

Also, like every year with both the Globes and the Emmys, the Best Comedy Series is a joke. Big Bang Theory and Girls are in while Louis CK, Community and Archer are out? Just quit if you fail that badly every year.

I'm glad Atlas didn't make it in because I thought that it's make-up was atrocious. And my judgement of the make-up at hand has zero to do with the race change stuff and everything to do with me just objectively thinking that the make up sucks.

Lincoln
Hitchcock

If these two aren't nominated? That will be a serious crime. All throughout Hitchcock, you forget that it's even Anthony Hopkins under there. A memorable actor being able to blend that perfectly? He deserves a nod as an actor too for it.

It didn't come off as a parody of Willis, which is what sold it.

Looking at the Awards Tally, I think it's safe to say that DDL and Hathaway are pretty much runaway winners now.

BP most likely will go to Lincoln, although Spielberg isn't getting a lot of love (which is somewhat surprising). Maybe we'll have a split? I don't know who is going to take Spielberg's spot though, I don't think it will be Bigelow is going to win either... so maybe it's Affleck.

Now that the major films have all been seen and mostly released (Zero Dark Thirty still hasn't gone wide, but it's not expected to be a commercial player anyway; though if it did become a big hit, that would probably reorient the game), I'm starting to believe that Best Picture will go to Lincoln. Les Miserables, ZDT, and maybe Argo are jockeying behind it. Lincoln represents probably the best fusion of art and commerce in the race: it will have made the most money, most likely, by the time the voting starts, and if ZDT hadn't happened it would probably have collected a majority of the critics' awards.

Also, for those who like to look for predictive factors based on other awards, Lincoln's actors currently lead in both the Actor and Supporting Actor races, in the general estimation; Day-Lewis is a clear favourite, while Jones' lead is more tenuous, but at the same time, as I survey the field I have a hard time imagining who would beat him (maybe one of the Django guys, depending on who gets in? But Waltz is fairly recent winner).

If that holds, that's an excellent omen for its Best Picture prospects, because winning both male acting awards historically aligns with the Best Picture winner 75% of the time (3 of the 4 times it happened, with Going My Way, The Best Years of Our Lives, and Ben-Hur; the exception is Mystic River, but if not for the LOTR phenomenon culminating that year I think that would have won too).

For fun, the other combinations of acting awards and their correlation to winning Best Picture:

Both lead awards (43%) - It Happened One Night, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Network, Coming Home, On Golden Pond, The Silence of the Lambs, As Good As It Gets

Both supporting awards (25%) - A Streetcar Named Desire, From Here to Eternity, Sayonara, West Side Story, The Last Picture Show, Julia, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Fighter

Both female awards (30%) - Jezebel, Gone With the Wind, Mrs. Miniver, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Miracle Worker, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Network, Moonstruck, The Piano, Shakespeare in Love

Actor and Supporting Actress (43%) - All the King's Men, On the Waterfront, Separate Tables, Elmer Gantry, Network, Kramer vs. Kramer, My Left Foot

Actress and Supporting Actor (50%) - A Streetcar Named Desire, Cabaret, Terms of Endearment, Million Dollar Baby

I agree Lincoln has the best shot right now. It is the "consensus" picture. For a few weeks there, I thought it would be Zero Dark Thirty, but it appears that that film will be too controversial for Academy voters given how congressional leaders are going after it and the fact that it seems to be somewhat embellished while acting like it's all fact.

Les Miserables has too many detractors, Argo came too early and the only other outside shot would be Silver Linings Playbook because Harvey is producing and trying to copy his The King's Speech strategy, to the movie's own box office detriment.

We will see.

Feels like this is Argo's to win.

A big critical and financial success. All the other major contenders have had their moment in the sun. They've won Directing Oscars (Bigelow, Hooper, Lee, Spielberg). Affleck hasn't (though he does have an Original Screenplay Oscar) and his winning cements the comeback story narrative.

Too much behind him and its the kind of film the Academy would reward; especially since Hollywood played a hand in the real life mission. WB is also planning on putting Argo back into theaters right when the nominations are announced. Get it back into everyone's mind.
