I forgot all about this. Here's a performance to keep an eye on:
Bill Murray as Franklin D. Roosevelt in Hyde Park on Hudson

So WB moved Gatsby to 2013 so that means it's out of the race for this year.

Amy Adams wouldn't be shocking either, presumably as Supporting Actress.

Amy will get her 4th nomination (either for The Master or Trouble With The Curve) but will unfortunately not win again. She'll lose out to Anne Hathaway IMO.

TDKR getting a BP, and BD nomination would be a long shot. Best Actor would probably between DDL, Phoenix, and some who'll surprise. Technical awards would be between Avengers, TDKR, and The Hobbit.

TDKR has no shot at a BD nomination. I think most years (like 2009 or 2011) it could have one of the potential five token slots for BP, but there is a lot of strong films this year.
I am not convinced The Master will be friendly enough for the Academy. I could see it sweeping critic choice awards but not catching on with the Academy. Kind of like how The Social Network won many critical choice awards but then the Academy went and fell in love with Harvey Weinst...er, The King's Speech. So do not count on that.

I still cringe whenever I see "Academy Award Winner" attached to Tom Hooper's name. [/stillbitter]

Ditto. And I say that as someone who can't wait for Les Miz.

Yeah, I don't see TDKR getting much more than one of the expanded Best Picture nominations, and a slew of technical nominations. At least if the year plays out as expected.
Of course, it may not. We could be in for a slew of disappointments. Based on what's come out to date, I think TDKR, Moonrise Kingdom, and Beasts of the Southern Wild are the leaders in the clubhouse. |

Who are the major contenders for Supporting Actor this year?
I havent seen many films or heard much but I predict. Hoffman for the Master for sure. Ive also heard a little buzz for Mcconoughey (or however you spell it) in Magic Mike |

looks like we have a solid front runner for best picture
David O Russell's "The Silver Lining Playbook" 'Silver Linings Playbook' Wins TIFF Audience Award an award best picture winners such as kings speech, american beauty and Slumdog Millionaire all won The 34 previous TIFF audience award winners went on to score 105 Oscar nominations, including 10 for best picture and nine for best foreign language film. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/rac...-cooper-370639 and has got nothing but rave reviews coming out of TIFF with people talking oscar talk especially for jennifer lawrence |

Man, the Best Actress category is looking pretty sad this year, imo. I've heard some critics say Jennifer Lawrence might qualify more for supporting in Silver Linings than lead, which would put her in that increasingly more crowded category while leaving the Best Actress category pretty sparse.
I mean, who've we got? Marion Cotillard, Keira Knightley and Naomi Watts? The only one of those that's getting really great buzz as an actual powerhouse performance is Cotillard (which is funny, because any other year, I would have thought she wouldn't even get a nod for this one since it's a 2nd foreign language performance for her....but now she appears to be the front-runner). The other two seem more like, "yeah, she's good. Might get a nomination." If Meryl Streep, Viola Davis or Maggie Smith get nominated I really feel like it will be just because they have 5 slots to fill (with Maggie's serving as a "Lifetime Acheivement" kinda nod). It would be nice to see the little girl from Beasts of the Southern Wild get in, and maybe Mary Elizabeth Winstead could sneak in there too, but I don't see either of them becoming favorites to win. And the "unknown quantities" coming up (Lincoln, Life of Pi, Zero Dark Thirty) don't appear to have any roles that would qualify for lead, either.

I'm actually wondering how good Samantha Barks is in Les Miserables because they could bump Anne to Lead and push Barks in the supporting role. It'll be an obvious category manipulation though as Fantine is very much a supporting role. |
