CCP: Dust will outlive PlayStation 3

"We've got a five year road map with a whole load of things we'd love to put into Dust"
Jonathan Lander, executive producer for EVE Online at CCP, has explained that new first-person shooter Dust 514 has a five-year roadmap, and enough development ideas to live for another 20 years.
"Our plan is that we want in another ten years to be having 'EVE is 20' and 'Dust is 10' [events]" he told GamesIndustry International, when asked if the online game would live beyond this console cycle.
"The whole way that we're doing our development process is so that we can push out expansions on a regular basis. We're not going to ship a unit and then in six months it's off the shelves and people have stopped playing it."
The game is a PlayStation 3 exclusive and is part of the massive and persistent EVE Online universe, with players in both games able to join forces and work together.
"We've got a five-year road map with a whole load of things we'd love to put into Dust. We've got crazy ideas that will take us through another 20 years of development," promised Lander.
He praised Sony's involvement in the project so far, which has allowed CCP to ensure that the game will offer the same connected and persistent play as EVE Online, the PC title that will celebrate its tenth birthday next year.

Rumour: Is Dust 514 Coming Out Next Month?

Sony Computer Entertainment America President and CEO Jack Tretton may have given away DUST 514's launch window. The EVE Online shooter sidequel has been slated for a 2012 release for some time now, but developer CCP has remained coy regarding the details.
During a recent FOX Business interview, Tretton said the sci-fi title is "coming out next month."

CCP has released a new dev diary video for its DUST 514 sci-fi shooter. The PlayStation 3 exclusive, which shares chat channels and an economy with MMO EVE Online, will initially feature three main vehicle classes.

The game's current beta build boasts light attack vehicles (think jeeps and small transports), heavy attack craft (i.e., tanks), and drop ships (the DUST version of a helicopter). CCP is also considering additional vehicle classes. Yes, including mechs. Lead vehicle designer Ryan Thornton gives us a preview of the current classes in the video after the cut.

When you're shooting your way across the planets in DUST 514, you don't want to be walking everywhere like an animal. You want to be riding in style, especially if you can be riding in something that also has armor plating and variable thrusters. That's where vehicles come into the game. A new video narrated by Ryan Thornton (also known as CCP Blam!) explains how vehicles will work in the shooter and what players can expect from their earliest rides and more advanced offerings.

The game's vehicle system starts everyone with very basic items, but as time goes by you can upgrade your rides with the use of skill points and different configurations. You can make your dropship logistical support for other vehicles, or you can turn it into a heavily armed and armored transport that clears a landing zone and puts down troops. Or you can turn it into a lightning-fast transport that brings players across the map faster than enemy players can react. Take a look at the full video just past the break to see more of the vehicle system in all its glory.

CCP merging DUST beta with EVE live server on January 10

EVE Online and DUST 514 players have been rubbing elbows on the Singularity test server for a while now. Beginning Thursday, January 10th, the two groups will be hobnobbing together for keeps on EVE's live Tranquility server.

With the two games combining, both playerbases will be able to interact via chat channels and even join corporations together. However, even though DUST is integrating into the live EVE server, CCP points out that the shooter is not officially launching. "For now we are remaining in closed beta from the DUST side of things," the company says. However, barring any major catastrophes, CCP also states this will be the last time DUST characters are reset.

Last week CCP took a big step toward DUST 514's official launch by merging the game's closed beta test environment into EVE Online's live Tranquility server. The next milestone is open beta, which the company says will begin on January 22nd.

"With no further character resets, every shot, every battle, and every contract now counts," according to a CCP press release. DUST marks the first time that games from two different genres have been into a single online experience as well as the first time that titles from a console platform and the PC have co-existed in real time.

Four tips that may come in handy as you first enter the challenging world of Dust 514

As you set foot on your first hostile planet Dust 514 can seem a little daunting. These tips should help you ease into life as a mercenary.
Train some skills

You may be tempted to dive right into battle before even looking at your character sheet. While there is no doubt that this will certainly be a lot of fun, you stand a much better chance of success if you first apply your 500,000 spare skill points awarded to you on character creation.
We will be providing some example initial skill allocations in the days to come, but in general when you are new to a game like DUST 514 it is a good idea not to specialise too early.
You will start with a few basic skills that relate to the class you chose on character creation. Level a few of these up to level 2, perhaps levelling weaponry and your primary weapon skill up to level 3. Next, purchase a few handheld weapon upgrades, and,if you are an arbiter perhaps consider purchasing "armour repair systems". Train these to level one.
You will find that spreading your skillpoints around in the early stages of character development will make you a lot more effective than putting all your skillpoints into just a small number of different skills. This is because each level you train, there is an exponential jump in the amount of skillpoints required for the same gain.
You do not not need to spend all your 500k skillpoints, but we would certainly recommend it.. you can always win more!
Resupply with nannohives

Nannohives are nifty pieces of equipment that allow you to resupply you and your teammates. If you chose the enforcer class during character creation this will be equipped as standard. To Drop a nannohive, simply hold down R2. This will bring up the equipment menu. Select the nannohive using the right analogue stick and release R2. To deploy your nannohive simply press R1.

If you can't kill the enemy - heal your friends

If you are finding kills ellusive during your first few matches then perhaps you should consider the medic class. Equipped with a nanite injector the medic can revive fallen teammates, an activity that actually gets you 60 war points 10 more than killing the enemy! To select your nanite enjector, hold R2 to bring up your equipment menu, select with the right analogue stick and release. To revive a fallen brother; simply walk up to his or her body and press R1.
If you chose the arbiter class on character creation, you will also have access to a repair tool that can heal armour on both friendly mercs and friendly vehicles. You get warpoints for triage when you have healed enough of their armour (25 wp at a time). It is also worth pointing out that the medic is not a non-combat role, its actually quite a fast paced way of playing involving lots of quick switching between firing on the enemy and triage.

Use free vehicles!

Many people wrongly assume that all vehicles must be paid for. There is one vehicle that you can call in free of charge. The "Light Assault Vehicle".
Depending on where you spawn, you can spend much of your time just running towards the action. The starter fit LAV (Baloch) may not be a formidable vehicle in terms of firepower or hitpoints, but it does get you from A to B quickly. This is vital in the early stages of a skirmish game and is very useful at most other times during play.
Depending on your choice of race and class, you will either have a Baloch or a Onikuma. To call in your vehicle, simply press right on the D-PAD. You will be presented with a menu. Select "LAV" and then "Baloch - Impact [STARTER FIT]" or "Onikuma - Impact [STARTER FIT]". After 15 seconds a dropship will deliver your speedy new light assault vehicle.

Shooter gameplay is on the rise in the MMO space, as titles like PlanetSide 2, Firefall, DUST 514, and Defiance are all marrying twitch-based running and gunning with some sort of persistent open-world progression component.

Defiance and DUST are particularly interesting, to me at least, because they're part of a larger IP. IN DUST's case, the title shares a game world and a server back-end with long-running sci-fi MMO EVE Online. Defiance, of course, is joined at the hip with the upcoming television show of the same name, though just how joined remains to be seen. With the integration of EVE Online and DUST 514 now detailed by CCP, a new trailer has been released on IGN to show off some of the goodies we can expect, including the infamous orbital strike mechanic that we've been hearing about since DUST 514's initial announcement.

This video shows off the Battle for Caldari Prime, which is said to be the pivot point for integration into both games. Dust514Base.com dissected the video, pointing out several new undocumented shinies, including the scrambler rifle, a possible first look at the Gallente Assault dropsuit, a redesigned wrist neocom, and a logi with a plasma cannon.

Although DUST 514 is still in open beta, a big update will soon deliver some significant changes to the game, changes that will bring it more in-line with the CCP's vision for this MMOFPS companion to EVE Online. During a presentation at GDC 2013, Thor Gunnarsson (VP of business development) and Halldor Fannar (CTO) shared more details about this update, dubbed Uprising after a merc revolt in the title's lore.

Fannar explained that Uprising focuses on two main themes. "The first theme we are calling 'making it matter.' It's about creating a more meaningful connection between DUST 514 and EVE." While the Caldari Prime event was the first step on that journey (20,000 battles took place on the ground), the planetary conquests system in this update will introduce features that will further intertwine the two games. "The other theme is basically visual improvements," Fannar explained, "making the graphics look better, making the graphics run faster, and also adding more graphics." Well that's good news that they r updating graphics hopefully they get a lot better after seeing the battlefield 4 gameplay this game looks like a toy

DUST 514's May 6th Uprising patch will revamp the sci-fi shooter's skill system. Among the changes are the removal of multiple prerequisite skills and a new node-based skill tree view that will replace the current list-based approach.

CCP is also refunding skill points and ISK and AUR for certain items based on their market value at the time of the respec. "You may have committed to a certain play style, and with an overhauled layout and collection of skills, you may find yourself regretting some of your prior choices," explains DUST creative director Atli Mar Sveinsson on the PlayStation Blog. "We have thus decided that it is far better to respec not only the skills but items as well. In short, you will get your skill points back and the ISK and AUR value of any item that is removed from your inventory."

As detailed on the Dev Blog, CCP has removed the secondary and tertiary requirement from all skills, so each only has one prerequisite.
The skill tree is now node-based, although a list view is available if you prefer. You’ll also be able to upgrade each skill multiple times.
Thanks to the sweeping changes, players wil be reimbursed for all the skill points they’ve used to date, including those spent on inventory items, based on the market value at the time of the re-spec.
Uprising is due on May 6, and CCP has promised more details on the overhauled skill system soon, as there’ll be loads of rebalancing to take in, too.
