Look up the Wiki entry for Metropolis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis_%28comics%29

It's been mentioned before in the postcrisis comics that Metropolis is in New York state.

New York City still exists in NY. Metropolis is just another city in NY.

Gotham is closer to Jersey in location.

Smallville IS in Kansas. Smallville is supposed to be a little obscure place in nowheresville. Hence why Lois nicknames Clark Kent as 'Smallville' in TAS and modern comics.

Must Smallville be in Kansas? I suppose not.

but, should it be in Kansas? H*** YES!! ( of course, that's my home state pride coming out..... )

besides, I think it's a moot point, as set pics of the Smallville scenes have shown Kansas State flags ( and Henry sporting a faded KU shirt ). So, in MOS at least, Smallville is in KS. and that's good enough for me.

For the record, I have nothing against Smallville being in Kansas. Kansas works fine, I just don't see it as a must like some people. Considering how many depictions of the town there have been. And I wouldn't mind seeing someone do something new with it.

Same with Metropolis. I wouldn't mind seeing it on the Pacific Coast. It's been influenced by cities such as San Francisco, and Vancouver in the past. Certainly one way to distinguish it from the darker Gotham.

The thing is, the word "Kansas" conveys an instant setting in your mind. Even without seeing Smallville, you know instantly where he comes from. You get this Wizard of Oz feeling that 5 minutes of a montage just can't duplicate.

I think it's a good idea to keep it in Kansas.

I always thought Smallville was in Kansas
Gotham City was based on New York
and
Metropolis was based on Chicago
I really can't remember a time when Smallville wasn't in Kansas; I assumed they chose it because of the image of Kansas. As American as applie pie, farms, "home grown", corn stocks, middle America; not really being a part of the big cities of the North, or the small towns of the South.

Presumably.

Keep in mind how old these stories are. Metropolis was originally based on Cleveland (back in the day), and later New York City, with some other influences. The popular 1940's cartoons used New York City itself as their setting. But Metropolis' physical location has been vague. It's generally implied to be in the Northeast though. Usually New York or Delaware.

Gotham's main inspiration is rather obvious (it's an old nickname for New York). But a lot of stories place it in New Jersey. Batman Begins has a city which looks very much like Chicago (since it's filmed mostly there). So, there Gotham could be a Great Lakes Region city. Which works quite well. Certainly explains the crime and corruption.

Before Begins, I always associated Gotham with Philadelphia.

Old districts. Rich doctors everywhere. Extreme class discrepancies. East Coast. Harbor town. Close enough to NY / Metropolis but just far enough. Bit of a reputation.

Seemed fitting.

Have to say just "Kansas" would make for a better nickname if they want to go that route. But it did convey a cultural gap.

Metropolis is supposed to be in Delaware. A State that doesn't really have a big city. Metropolis in New York is just.....overkill?

Also, Gotham's in Jersey.

Well, as a rule it seems that Marvel puts all its heroes in New York. DC gives every major hero their own city. Superman has Metropolis, Batman has Gotham, Flash has Central City, Green Lantern has Coast City, etc. Apparently they ran out of good city names in the fifties.

Even b-listers like Green Arrow get their own city.

Good gracious, Philadelphia, Michigan!? We are just going all over the map with where we thought these cities were based.

And yes, Smallville is in Kansas... Seems pretty pointless to put it elsewhere....

You would... The rest of us see it as it was designed to be; A nickname for a small town rube (in Lois' opinion) who made it to the big city and has a naive small town perspective on real big city events.

It makes perfect sense...
