And if we're all just weighing in, I remember hearing Metropolis was Toronto, but became a NY style seaside city, whereas Gotham was always the worst of NY...

Since Smallville is in Kansas ever since I remember, I see no point in changing that. And I've always thought Metropolis was several hours to drive (ok not the 20+ hours as it seems from Kansas City to New York, but still), so it being in New York state isn't that far off. At least, that's been my guess....

But I guess it can be anywhere really, but wherever they put it, it shouldn't be too close to Metropolis in my opinion.

I think Metropolis should be LIKE New York...Metroplois state, county and city...don't put it in another state

I dunno. Fictional states kind of take me out of the story. Where would Metropolis state be? Would it take the place of another state, like New York? It's just kindof freaky to me to imagine the US having different states. Fictional cities are easier to accept, they've much more common in fiction.

I don't see much of the point. Cities are usually fairly removed from the rest of the state. Just look at New York City and compare it to the rest of New York.

However New York is jam packed enough as it is. Especially if Gotham is supposed to be in the same area.

They could always put them on different coasts. Though obviously Gotham wouldn't work well as a West Coast city.

Sometimes I wish they would have based some of these characters in real cities. It would have been better than giving every superhero their own private New York City.

Well I do remember a set photo from Chicago that had a sign which said; ´´Metropolis County``. But I can't seem to find it anymore (because such set photos aren't of interest to most people so it wasn't posted on many sites )

I agree to a point. But Gotham has become a "character" in its own right. Metropolis somewhat less so, since its appearance is less consistent, and its based on several cities. Gotham has a more consistent theme.

I wouldn't mind if Superman were based in New York but with a few traits of Metropolis, like the Daily Planet, STAR Labs, and Lexcorp.

I'm partial to the West Coast myself. At least for Metropolis. Given the brighter outlook. Probably because of Superman TAS. New York has enough superheroes.

If you choose New York what happens to Batman? Gets the bad side of town?

I understand that...and I guess you could say that Metropolis would take the place of New York state

In STM, Metropolis was NYC - with the Empire State Building, the Twin Towers, the Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Station, etc. No attempt at all to disguise the fact.

It depends on the continuity, in Young Justice Gotham is in Connecticut and New York also exists. Metropolis , I believe is in Delaware.

I remember reading somewhere that Gotham is supposed to be in New Jersey.

Well, presumably because Metropolis is in New York in a lot of stories. You can't have New York City, Gotham and Metropolis all in one state.

Supposedly Metropolis and Gotham are sister cities, Gotham being modeled on the darker side of NYC, Metropolis on the lighter side.

Until the 80s Gotham City was actually a fairly ordinary city. In the early days Metropolis actually seemed like the worse place.

I agree to a West Coast Metropolis. I always envisioned Gotham as New York and Metropolis as San Francisco. If not San Fran, then maybe a city like Seattle or Vancouver.

Probably the main reason I wouldn't mind it if they based Superman in New York. I mean, Metropolis is usually treated like the biggest, most prosperous city in the US, and that's what New York is in the real world.

Well, the USA of the DC universe seems to have a lot more inhabitants since they have Metropolis, Gotham City and Central City exists beside the real life ones.

A little bit odd, but I don't see a reason why those cities could not exist in one state.

This is actually acknowledged in the comic books, specifically in JLA vs. Avengers. When the JLA visits the Marvel universe (which is an analogue of the real world). Superman notices that the Marvel version of Earth is smaller than the DC's own (therefore, the DC Earth is bigger than the real Earth).
