I had no idea that Wally bashed the cinematography for The Avengers. Dont get me wrong, there were a few funky shots but nothing too messy.

The domino effect resulting from his comments is hilarious. Avenger Superfans and/or Whedonites are having a field day.

Anywho, Wally is an award-winning cinematographer. I'm sure he has every right to have an opinion and be given the benefit of the doubt.

Although i prefer TDRK to Avengers , i'll admit that Wally's comments did make him look like a dick. Especially when you consider that Whedon did give a classy response.
I also remeber that Wally couldn't understand why Nolan was a big fan of MIchael Bay movies . He hates Bay's movies.
No matter how talented you are , one thing that people always hate it sis n you come off as some snobbish dick. Wally needs to reign in his opinions and express them better without resorting to personal attacks.

I agree, but still it takes away nothing from their work, and one should not judge something on a personal opinion such as that. It's just film. I mean in his early days especially James Cameron was a public jerk to everyone he worked with and people around him lol. But it did not take away from his early work.

My point is, it was not a nice thing to say, he does have an opinion and I've seen much worse things said on these forums when it comes to opinion. The internet is the bottom of the well when it comes to some opinions and how people can express them. But Wally should be more professional about it, this I agree with. He is a big player and should not say such things un-restrained even if he feels that way or not.

My frustration came from the people acting like this would effect the quality of the work he is doing in some matter. It won't lol.

Well he has to prove that he can direct a film.
But yeah i do agree that this won't affect his work. At the same time he also can voice his opinion without dissing someone or something.

I wouldn't call Wally a d**k, but his quotes don't exactly reflect of professionalism at times. The Michael Bay comment is another one that, perhaps, should have been re-worded, but... it's Wally. He's always been outspoken.

And I love him for that. But yeah, hopefully he won't be starting any more wars of words, cause he doesn't need that kind of attention especially at this new stage in his career. All in all he seems like a really cool, down to earth dude who just has strong opinions and needs to work on his filter.

Seconded. I don't mind him voicing his opinion about the camerawork in The Avengers, but don't phrase it to be confrontative. There's a difference between not liking something and picking a fight over it.

As long as there's more interaction than their last outing together.

Let's hope so, Depp really needs to do something different. Both of them together would be very interesting.

I have a feeling the plot is some sort of rescue mission into some digital world and the evil computer turns against them.

Wally's comment about Avengers was incredibly non-classy, but it doesn't in anyway take away from my liking of his work as a DOP. And to say that one is a little curious about him as a director would be an understatement.

Here's hoping Bale signs on!

I think Bale's film with David O. Russell will prevent him from doing this schedule-wise. It's not surprising though that Wally was courting Bale. He actually knew Bale longer than Nolan (they worked together on Laurel Canyon) and was the one who suggested Bale to Nolan for Batman.

Johnny Depp Starrer 'Transcendence' Gives Summit AFM Hit (Exclusive)

Who says that you can’t sell a $100 million movie at the American Film Market?

Summit has taken on sales duties for “Transcendence,” a sci-fi /fantasy feature budgeted at $120 million, and is selling the film to international buyers this week at the annual film market. The film has created the biggest buzz of the week, in a market where buyers say there are few notable titles.

“Transcendence” stars Johnny Depp and is being directed by Wally Pfister. It was written by Jack Paglen. Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove, Kate Cohen, Annie Marter, Marisa Polvino and David Valdes are producing the film, with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas executive producing. The production is by Alcon Entertainment and Straight Up Films.

The story follows three scientists, attempting work on stem cell and advanced computer technology, which will change the fundamentals of human life. Tension comes into play when they are met by protest and resistance. The film is due to start shooting in February 2013.

Warner Bros. is handling domestic distribution.

Other films topping the Lionsgate slate at this year’s AFM include Neil Burger’s “Divergent” with Shailene Woodley; “Pawn Sacrifice,” with Tobey Maguire, which Ed Zwick is directing; and “Venus in Fur” from Roman Polanski.

The company is also handling “Pompeii” in 3D from Paul W.S. Anderson, as well as another Alcon title, “Prisoners” from Denis Villeneuve.

I don't get the hate against him for what he said about Avengers' cinematography. He didn't say Seamus McGarvey's body of work is appalling. He said the way Avengers was shot to show off the sets as opposed to telling the story was appalling. If he doesn't like something, he doesn't like something. He said it like pretty much any normal person would. But all of a sudden the internet thinks he's a snobby dick just because he didn't like something Joss Whedon was involved in.

Anyhow, I'm looking forward to this.

Judging from the bashing, it's mostly Whedonites and fanboys who have taken great offense to Wally's comments. Either way, his comments won't hinder any of his success for this film. He's entitled to his opinion, and as an Oscar-winning cinematographer his words do hold weight.

Academy Award wining director of photography Wally Pfister—a longtime collaborator with Chris Nolan who is about to embark on his directorial debut—urges Hollywood not to let celluloid see its demise.

“Chris and I—and I’m hoping other filmmakers—will fight as hard and long as we can to keep it going,” the Dark Knight Rises cinematographer told The Hollywood Reporter.

For Pfister, shooting film in the current Hollywood climate is both bitter and sweet. “It's sweet; we love film,” Pfister said. “A lot of cinematographers really like digital cameras, but Chris and I still prefer film. There are plenty of other filmmakers out there—Paul Thomas Anderson, Spielberg, J.J. Abrams—that still prefer film. The bitter part is that it is being forced out of the market. There are plenty of us who aren’t willing to give it up yet. The sad part is these so-called market forces are pushing our film away.

“We want to be able to have an option. It can be the vinyl of image capture, but we want to be able to have access to it,” he added. “I’m planning on shooting my movie on film, 35mm anamorphic.”

Pfister is currently in pre-pro on his directorial debut, Alcon’s Transcendence, which will be exec produced by Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas.

Unsurprisingly, there is curiousity surrounding whom Pfister will select as director of photography on the film.

“I haven’t [decided] yet. We are in the final phases of that, but I don’t have to start [the cinematographer] until December,” he said, adding with a chuckle, “I’m being careful and choosing wisely. It will be someone who really knows what they are doing.”

Pfister did confirm that he brought on production designer Chris Seagers—who worked with Tony Scott on a string of films including Unstoppable, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Déjŕ Vu and Domino. “His work with Tony was exceptional. He has got a great eye and imagination. He has brought a great vision to [this project].”

Additionally, Pfister will reteam with costume designer Cindy Evans, with whom he worked on Chris Nolan’s Memento.
