Default Iron man 2

Was it needed? I mean what did it contribute to the overall story?

Yes, Tony Star discovered a new element and we were introduced to a new character which was Black Widow.

tony learns that he's not invincible. He opens up a lil to teamwork, he sees a bit more of his dad's legacy, blackwidow, warmachine, etc etc.

Ironman2 isn't initially strong, but a lot of people seem to agree that it gets better with multiple viewings.

businesswise, it also kept the momentum of the MCU going as nothing came out in 2009, and thor and cap would still be 2011.

Iron Man 2 is very underrated in my opinion, because contrary to popular belief around here it's actually a good film.

Ironman 2 was meh... to me. It was like Ironman took two steps forward and Ironman 2 took three steps back.

It's nowhere near being bad. I think the initial backlash was because it didn't live up to the first movie and with the cast involved, it didn't really live up to the potential.

Still a decent movie though.

yea your right. It just a notch under Ironman. I was expecting Ironman in IM2 to fight like the Ironman spot in the Avengers Trailer 2. What we got was just Ironman displaying his ablities. None of IM's battles where choreographed well. It was more like lets show IM fly. Lets show War Machine shoot alot. Let show IM shot some lazers out of his hands. There was no complex choreography behind it.

Yea, it's wasted potential more than anything. I thought Sam Rockwell was awesome though.

IM2 is the movie that really tied many lose threads from the MCU together. Of course some of those threads came up later in Thor or Cap. That's why IM2 is a way better novie now than in 2009.

I agree, IM's fights weren't choregraphed that well and I would've loved for him to engage those drones in aerial combat instead of just flying for 5 minutes.

The fight inside Iron Man's house should've been much more destructive as well, I was expecting them to really tear that house up.

For me the Whiplash character in general kinda sucked...lotta potential was wasted.

Also the Shield stuff was not as strong as it was in Thor and felt less necessarily and more Avengers promoy

However I think it was a decent character development for Stark which I'm curious to see how it plays out in Avengers and Iron Man 3.

I've kinda stayed true to like a 7.5/8 raiting for the film....I think if Avengers and Iron Man 3 are strong we'll all look back on IM2 and be cool with it....if they suck than we might point to IM2 as the tipping point

Justin Hammer is a phenomenally good character though

Can't speak to SHH ultra sensibilities but I agree that it IS a very good film, especially the back half.

I think correctly labeling it "good" IS popular opinion by the non-fanboy community. At least a majority opinion.

And IM2 does set up Avengers nicely which is a huge perk.

Rourke was memorable as Whiplash for what he was given. I recall an interview with him saying that a lot of scenes he filmed that gave his character more depth were cut. I woulda preferred more Whiplash tbh...Tony battling his personal demons was well executed but there wasn't really a big constant threat.

I didn't hate Iron man 2. I thought it was a good extension of Tony Stark's story. I DO think the villain(s) could have been utilized a bit better, But I liked Hammer more than I did Vanko.
I had heard that the original ideas for this film were scrapped/revised in order for Marvel Studios to infuse more of the Avengers Initiative into the storyline. But I can't recall where I heard about that. I can't seem to find any evidence of this online, other than the cast and crew were ultimately unhappy with the final outcome. Does anyone know of any of the previous ideas that were tossed around?

No. Finished movies are seldom what was intended at the start. But the studio did not exactly force Favreau to include SHIELD or the Avengers Initiative.

Maybe its not but it sure did feel like it. The Shield segments didn't fell like they were integrated into the main story. It felt like the shield portion was added after the fact and it had the effect of completely derailing the main story arc. I mean look at Thor the shield presence was integrated into the story and it didn't have a negative effect on the over all enjoyment of the film.

That might have more to do with Therouxs writing imho.

Ah, the infamous Iron Man 2. I spent a lot of time defending this movie when it came out, but the more I watch it the more I have to admit I dislike it. I don’t completely dislike it I should say, and some people are too harsh, but when I look at it now I just see wasted potential. The two biggest problems are the script and the tone, I'd say.

It takes only the more shallow elements from the first Iron Man rather than builds on it, which is its biggest crime. It does expand the MCU a bit though. I particularly like the introduction of the Stark Expo.

I rather enjoyed the movie since there some nice set pieces in there and it did kind of move the whole IM and MCU along to a degree. It moved along at a nice, fun pace but I kind of felt that the movie really dragged after Tony was kind of forced to stay in his house to create a new element. It just wasn't exciting seeing Tony stuck in his house doing nothing but reading and watching film without any real human interaction besides when he went to see Pepper.

Two characters that I found wasted were Whiplash and Justin Hammer. Whiplash had so much more potential if they stuck to giving him either one of the original personas they combined (Whiplash and Crimson Dynamo) and not just made him seem like a simple villain instead of a evil mastermind that had more of a sense of impending danger.

As for Hammer, I sort of wished they made him seem like a credible threat to Tony that would make you think would cause a rivalry to develop. I never got anything more than Hammer as like a younger brother trying to imitate his older, more successful brother. I think they could have darkened his character a bit to keep him sort of in line with his comic version, but still kept some of the lighthearted quirks that Rockwell brought to the role.
