You know, I have been rewatching seasons six and seven. It is amazing how good even the mediocre episodes are when compared to season eight, just due to Carrell's presence. How bad this show got without him is a testament to him.

I always thought people massively downgraded seasons 5-7. Was it season 2-3 level greatness? No. But it was still enjoyable-- still watchable.

The same cannot be said for this past season. Or the one ahead.

Five is still enjoyable but six I think fumbled a lot of potential and seven was disappointing, had a few bad episodes (Christening, Viewing Party, Threat Level Midnight, Search Committee) since they knew before they started writing that it would be Steve's last season and they only failed.

It did have a lot of Gabe and the season finale left a bad taste and didn't make you want to look forward to the fall like every previous season finale did.

It was also airing with 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation and Community. The Office was usually the weakest show compared to those three during seasons 6-8, never the best or 2nd best.

Season Two
Season Three
Season Four
Season Five
Season Six
Season One
Season Seven
Season Eight
*saved for Season Nine*

I will say I like how they get everyone on the DVD cover and not just the main characters as they used to do. However, the photoshop is terrible

I want the season 9 premiere to reveal that season 8 was a dream ala Dallas. Holly wakes up and sees Michael in the shower and the scene ends with a "that's what she said" joke.

I'll echo the sentiments around here. The show right now is a shadow of its former self

I used to defend the show when people used to say "that show is so stupid"

Now it is stupid

Turn the tables on those people. When they say it's stupid, say "Yeah, and you made it that way! Are you happy? Are you?!?"

Exclusive: B.J. Novak Takes an Office Breather
Jun 27, 2012 09:09 AM ET
by Michael Schneider
4 Comments

B.J. Novak
Dunder-Mifflin temp Ryan Howard may be joining his on-again, off-again flame Kelly Kapoor in exiting The Office. B.J. Novak, who has doubled as a writer off-screen and a series regular on-screen since The Office's 2005 launch, is leaving as a full-time part of the show.

Novak will remain a member of the extended Office family, however. Even though he no longer has a deal in place with series producer Universal TV, Novak is expected to make recurring appearances on The Office and could even still do some writing for the show. Novak has also directed several episodes of The Office and could return in that capacity as well.

But Novak's decision to end his full-time presence at The Office comes just as his good friend Mindy Kaling, who has played Kelly since the show's launch, leaves to star in Fox's new fall comedy The Mindy Project. Novak served as an executive producer on The Mindy Project pilot but won't hold a permanent position there either.

The Office, already at a crossroads following the departure two seasons ago of Steve Carell, is in for more big changes this year. Besides Kaling and Novak, James Spader is exiting after one season, while Catherine Tate is now full-time. Stars Ed Helms and John Krasinski are expected to appear in fewer episodes next year as they juggle their busy movie schedules.

Also, departing showrunner Paul Lieberstein (who plays The Office's human resources manager, Toby) is moving on to develop an Office spinoff centered on the character of Dwight (played by Rainn Wilson). That means executive producer Greg Daniels, who originally adapted The Office from its U.K./Ricky Gervais roots, is returning full time to oversee the show's creative evolution this season. With Daniels in charge, NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters last month that the show will deliver some "explosive story twists."

The character of Ryan has seen ups and downs throughout the run of The Office. Originally the office temp, Ryan quickly moved up the ladder to become a big time Dunder-Mifflin executive — until he developed a drug habit and then was exposed for corporate fraud and fired. He was later brought back as a temp in the Scranton office and from there occasionally came up with new schemes (like a social networking site dubbed "WUPHF") and toyed with Kelly's affections.

Novak's other credits include appearances in the features Inglorious Basterds and The Dictator.

Even if the show was still good, I wouldn't care much about this. As it is, he is so low down on the totem pole of characters that actually add something to the show, they could've gotten rid of him seasons ago and I wouldn't care.

No big loss.

They really messed up his character. From the beginning, he was the straightman in the office. Then he just degenerated into a stupid, bratty man child.

I actually quite liked the degeneration, but at a certain point it's like "Why is he still listed with Carrell/Wilson/Krasinski/Fisher/Helms?"

It was always weird Novak was in the credits. He never really featured much. In fact the only time I can think where he played a "bigger than usual" role was during the Michael Scott Paper Company run.

TV Line:

Exclusive Office Spin-Off Scoop: Find Out Who's Who Down on The Farm
by Kimberly Roots

The Office’s Dwight Schrute has a dream to be a boss, and it’s inching closer to being a reality.

TVLine has secured exclusive intel on casting for The Farm, the buzzed-about planted spin-off to star Rainn Wilson‘s ambitious off-kilter character. The prospective off-shoot will sneak peek as an episode of The Office’s upcoming Season 9 before getting the green light to make a go of it on its own.

In the new show, Dwight and his kin inherit a large family farm/bed-and-breakfast. When the bespectacled beet farmer decides to give the new venture a go, he must talk his brother and sister into joining him.

What’s that you say? You’d like more info on the rest of the cast? So far, the series regular roles include:

FANNIE SCHRUTE | Attractive, urban and in her late 20s/early 30s, Dwight’s younger sister fled the Schrute farm life for Boston as soon as she could, and has had little to do with her roots for quite some time. Now divorced with one son, Fannie is “a bit of a pseudo-intellectual lefty” with an ironic sense of humor and a great heart.

JEB SCHRUTE | Dwight’s easygoing thirtysomething brother hasn’t done well in any of the career paths he’s followed – worm breeder and Bigfoot hunter among them — but has found some success with a pot farm. He’s got none of Dwight’s dedication or work ethic, but he has made an exercise video about things you can do with a knife and a canoe. (We like him already.)

CAMERON WHITMAN | Dwight’s smart and slightly weird 9-year-old nephew (Fannie’s son) is a cosmopolitan lad who nevertheless feels the pull of his Schrute heritage, especially when he’s around someone — his uncles, perhaps? — who can offer the fatherly guidance he lacks.

HEINRICH MANHEIM | The Schrute siblings’ great uncle is charming, greedy, manipulative… and just may have had to spend time in Argentina following World War II, thanks to his German National Socialist roots. Oh, and he vows to kill Dwight by the end of the first episode.

There is no word yet on the whereabouts of cousin Mose (played now and again by Office co-exec producer Michael Schur) or whether the titular farm is the same one Dwight has called home all these years. You’ll recall that he’s already tried being a hotelier — in Season 4, Pam and Jim even spent a romantic night “away” as guests of the Schrute homestead — so here’s hoping Dwight’s improved on his hospitality since!
A spinoff featuring characters Dwight has never once mentioned in eight years of The Office? Sure. Why not?

There is a disturbing lack of Mose in there as well.

Well, he'd probably be a difficult one to have around on a regular basis, since he's showrunning Parks and Rec now.

Fraiser never mentioned a brother and said that his father was dead on Cheers and Fraiser worked just fine. The sister and her son sound like sitcom cliches (didn't they try that on Joey?) but the pot farmer brother and Nazi uncle who wants to murder Dwight actually sounds funny. It all depends on who they cast. John Laroquette could be HILLARIOUS as the charming, murderous, Nazi uncle.

I agree with you on the uncle. That was really one of the only parts where I was like "Okay, this could actually be pretty good."

The rest is just ugh. I realize Fraiser did it, but for **** sake that was two decades ago. It's just such an antiquated way to try to force a spinoff. Given how much Dwight speaks of his family (whereas Fraiser just clearly wanted to put all that family stuff behind him and be "one of the guys" at Cheers), it just seems really odd that he wouldn't bring up his siblings.

To say the original show is bottoming out at this point is stating the obvious. I just can't see how this stands a chance of being a success. This will be the "Joey" of this decade. The AfterMASH of the 21st century.

But Dwight is a snob. He seems like the exact type who would be embarrassed of a stoner brother and liberal sister. I think it depends on the focus. If the writers are smart enough to focus on the Nazi uncle (and cast John Laroquette), Dwight and the brother and less on the sister and the nephew (who ought to be written out...kids + sitcom = bad) it can be good. I'm not having high hopes but the Nazi uncle with the right casting could make the show watchable until the writers find their voice.

Laroquette seems too young for what I was getting from that description. I was imagining basically a male equivalent of Cloris Leachman on Raising Hope.
