Let's dissect an artist or writer

Inspired by the "state your opinion of a character"-thread - and since I haven't been able to find this kinda thread - I thought we could apply the same rules to an artist or writer.

The idea is this:

For 36 hours we can post stuff about about a specific artist or writer or
team, and the work assosciated with that person.
It doesn't have to be be limited to superhero stuff. It can be superheroes or
humor; underground or romance; funny animal or horror; American,
European, or Japanese. In short: all genres are welcome.

anyone feel free to bring up a new one.

My first topic is this tragic talent:

My introduction to Wood was in 1984 at the tender and impressionable age of nine. I stumbled upon the first part of what was intended to be a trillogy, The world of the Wizard King from 1978.

I didn't really know what it was, but I was hooked. It would be many years, more than two decades actually, before I got to read the second part, which unfortunately did not meet my all too high expectations. Woods eyesight had deteriorated, which showed all to clearly iin the follow up book, he had personal problems, including health problems, he always had problems making ends meet, and in 1981 he put a Smith & Wesson .44 to his head and checked out. Very sad.

Anyway, in my native Denmark the cover looked like this:

It was not only my introduction to Wood but to fantasy as well. It had it all, horror, magic, strange creatures - good and evil, humor, and those beautiful girls that Wood drew better than most, rivaled only by a select few, including his mentor the great Will Eisner.

Wood had assisted Eisner during the Spirit's last year, and while I don't think that collaboration was the highlight on either man's work, or the series itself, it is interesting to own. To me, few people have ever topped Wood when he was at his best; Will Eisner and Carl Barks being among the few. Wood's style showed trace of Eisner as well as of the two grand old maestros Foster and Raymond, but there is something that is clearly unmistakably Woody. It's weird, it's beautiful, it's disturbing, it's funny, and those girls . . .

I have enjoyed most of his work from the deliberately silly Sally Forth and his misogynistic Cannon to his sci-fi and fantasy work. His was a talent that deserved more.

eh, dude, I may be wrong, but with the big book of rules you posted up, you may have put a lot of posters off contributing to this thread.
From the way you speak, 'none of this adolescent nonsense' 'let's be more indepth', it sounds like you are dissing a lot of the shorter responses in the 'state your opinion' threads.

It's like you want everyone to contribute at least a paragraph of an essay, or not to contribute at all.

sometimes people don't feel like saying much, just popping in with a quick opinion.

it's like, you only have a handful of posts but you are trying to tell all the oldtimers how to post in a thread that would usually interest and encompass *all* types of posters, not just the essayists.

In short, if you snob it, they will snub it.



and as for the artist? I don't really know his work, he was the first artist to work on Daredevil though, right? I used to have DD issue 7, where he fought Sub-Mariner, but had to sell it for money for booze and drugs to go to a party, haha, it was an important party, and there was no way I was going to it sober.
Anyway, I liked the art in that issue, he had a nice simple style.

I regret part nr. 2. I regret the way I put it. There is nothing wrong with short posts.

What I meant was really just to keep a nice and civil tone, but I expressed it wrong. I'm not so familiar with the internet forum way of writing. Didn't mean to rub anyone the wrong way. It was meant as an invitation for all to share their knowledge and enthusiasm of an artist with the rest of the board.

About your question, if it was a question. Wood was not the original Daredevil artist. Bill Everett of Namor the Submariner fame co-created Daredevil with Stan Lee, designed his original red and yellow costume, drew the first episode, and also co-created Franklin Nelson and Karen Page.

Woody's contribution when he took over pencilling was coming up with the all red costume, and co-created the villains Stiltman and Mr. Fear.

Aye, I know what it is like getting used to the forum world, it's a whole new world, it takes a bit of getting used to, you can say something you don't think is a big deal, but it can rub some folk up the wrong way.

edit: and aye, I understand you expressed that meaning in an unfortunate way, but from what I could see there wasn't really any problems in the 'syo' threads...the thing is, sometimes people just feel like saying 'that's awesome', or 'he sucks' lol, y'know, as long as they are not insulting any posters that way, I don't see the problem with even that kind of post, as long as it is their honest opinion, and they are not just trying to cause trouble.

Also, yeah, there are lots of fandom arguments around this joint, but as far as I know, there really hasn't any of that in the 'state your opinion' threads. there has been a civil tone, folk just pop in and give a quick op, I don't really partake of them much these days, but i did tonight, just when i feel like it, usually if i see an obscure character no-one else talks about that i happen to know.

and yeah, i am ignorant about those early issues of DD, so thanks for the info. I picked up issue 7 at this model train exhibition in london when I was a kid, I have collected comics all my life, so of course I knew how valuable that one was, and they didn't know, they sold it for 2 pounds. I got a Superboy one from the 60s for 2 pounds as well, they only had 2 or 3 comics in the place.

Unfortunately i had to sell it that day as I had no other recourse for money, stupid, and my biggest regret as a collector, as if I had not got drunk the night before, i would have not had to have sold that comic. But i was depressed, so i wanted to get drunk, haha.

Anyway...I just wanted to explain why I sold it. and yeah, I knew that issue 7 was the first appearance of the red costume as well, so, y'know, that was a good one to have.

I have heard of this artist many times, but have never read much of his work, when I get the opportunity to get ahold of more comics, i will make sure i look up his work.
