Sydney lands rights to make The Wolverine with Hugh

• Will generate more than $80 million in production costs
• Jobs for 720 cast and crew; more than 2000 extras jobs

In a deal estimated to be worth $80 million to the New South Wales economy, the blockbuster is the latest big budget movie to be made in the state following recent hits such as The Great Gatsby, Lego, Walking With Dinosaurs and Happy Feet 2.

Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner, who helped secure the deal with 20th Century Fox when he flew to Los Angeles in January, said winning the film would generate more than 2000 jobs for Sydney.


"The Wolverine is expected to generate more than $80 million in production expenditure in NSW and create more than 720 jobs for NSW-based cast and crew, along with opportunities for 1200 extras," he said.

"It is a testament to our screen industry that Hugh Jackman and his team have chosen to come back to Australia after such a positive experience making the X-Men Origins."

The Federal Government has contributed $12.8 million to securing the film for Sydney, a bid that beat off Victoria as a possible location.

Although some production work is scheduled for the US, another $10 million worth of post-production work will be done here, especially visual effects. Both state and federal government incentives were provided to bring the film to Sydney.

The film follows the X Men Origins: Wolverine filming here bringing 1000 jobs to Australia.

That film was seen by millions of moviegoers worldwide and brought great exposure to Australia's screen production sector.

They should do some Japan location shooting.Since part of delay was over disaster In japan this makes little sense expect to save money.It seems like the studio work will
be done In Aulstralia and locations there and US will double for Japan.

Here's Hugh's announcement. He's in makeup for the last scene in Les Miserables which he's shooting now. He said Wolverine starts end of July/beginning of August.

It appears It will film entirely In Aulstralia with post production done In LA.

This will be second cheapest film In series.X-Men was done on 75 million budget.X2,Wolverine,and First Class were done In 100 million plus range.The Last Stand for 210
Million.However since as far as we know The Silver Samuri Is only other mutant besides Wolverine In film that will help.

At least we know now filming will beguin at begaining of August.

In the script Silver Sam ain't a mutant. Wolverine's the only mutant in the picture (awesome).

Ok.I guess they changed that then so wolverine will be only mutant.So I guess we can expect a lot of ninja style action with Wolverine Vs Ninjas.It explains why they can make this film for 80 Million.You only need special effects for wolverine's claws and Healing
Factor.

The Wolverine to be filmed in Australia

Sydney has beaten Vancouver to James Mangold’s The Wolverine, the sixth film in the X-Men franchise, principally because the Australian Government is providing a one-off cash incentive of $13.2m (A$12.8m).

“We moved from Vancouver for economic reasons,” said line producer Joe Caracciolo, who was representing Twentieth Century Fox at a media conference held at digital production house Animal Logic in Sydney this morning. “More and more there is pressure on the costs of pictures and the numbers were not adding up (in Canada).”

Big Hollywood blockbusters are not arriving on Australia’s shores in the numbers they used to because of the strength of the Australian dollar; the government has made it very clear that the cash payment is a one-off but has noted that it is what the film would get if the location offset was increased from its current rate of 15 per cent to 30 per cent, fuelling speculation that this incentive may be increased for all big-budget non-Australian films, not just those starring Hugh Jackman.

Once the Australian government had secured The Wolverine, several states fought to get the film, which tells a story set in Japan, and the NSW government won with an additional cash payment and payroll tax relief.

The key speaker at this morning’s media conference, NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner expects the film to spend more than US$82.6m (A$80m) in his state and create 720 jobs for local cast and crew and 1,200 jobs for extras.

The producers on The Wolverine are Lauren Shuler Donner, Jackman and John Palermo.

“It is a testament to our screen industry that Hugh Jackman and his team have chosen to come back to NSW, after such a positive experience making the X-Men Origins: Wolverine here in 2008,” said Stoner.

Post-production facilities have been particularly hit by the downturn in international production. Most of the post-production work on The Wolverine will occur in the US but some of the visual effects work will occur in NSW. “Productions like this are a tremendous boost to tourism with Sydney capturing media attention around the globe,” said Stoner.

Fox has scheduled The Wolverine for release in July 2013.

It's quite possible for films to be made on lower budgets. Just look at what was achieved with Chronicle (budget = $15m), District 9 (budget = $30m) and Monsters (budget = $500,000).

Its possible but that doesnt happen with franchise films like this alot if at all. 80 mil should be fine. Fox does seem to be goen a bit cheap though. Even with ****** reviews,fan hate and a leaked copy Origins still did well. That says alot about Wolverines success and audience interest.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Arts Minister Simon Crean today announced that one of the biggest movie productions of the year, The Wolverine, will be filmed in Sydney, creating jobs for thousands of Australians.

To attract The Wolverine to Australia, the Gillard Government granted the producers a one-off payment of $12.8 million which will result in over $80 million of investment in Australia and create more than 2000 jobs.

The payment effectively provided The Wolverine a one-off investment package equivalent to an increase in the existing Location Offset to 30 per cent.

Without this effective tax offset incentive, the producers of The Wolverine would not have chosen Australia as the location.

The Wolverine will star one of Australia’s best actors, Hugh Jackman, and reaffirm Australia’s status as one of the world’s best filming destinations.

The production will create more than 2000 jobs for Australians in all parts of the production sector from performers to the people behind the cameras and in studios – the set builders, lighting technicians, editors and special effects artists.

Up to 1500 indirect jobs will also be created in industries that provide services to large budget productions such as transport, catering and hospitality.

The Wolverine joins a long list of blockbuster productions filmed in Australia including The Matrix Trilogy and the highest budget television series of its time, The Pacific.
The Wolverine’s predecessor X-Men Origins: Wolverine was also filmed in Australia, created 1000 Australian jobs and was seen by millions of moviegoers around the world.

This new chapter in the Wolverine series will help develop the skills and experience of our film sector – jobs that we want to keep here in Australia, not overseas.

A healthy Australian film sector is essential if we are to produce and see Australian content at the cinema, on our TV screens and online into the future.

The issues facing the screen industry are a focus of the National Cultural Policy and as such, will remain on the Government’s agenda in the coming years.

Large budget international films make a vital contribution to the development of the local Australian screen industry and attracting them to Australia’s shores remains a priority for the Australian Government.

Bringing The Wolverine to Australia reflects the strong and ongoing support of screen industry by Gillard Government.

I think them going for a bit of a lower budget is a good thing, means they can take a few more risks and in all honesty Wolverine isnt a character that needs $150 million to make a good movie out of, something which they failed to do last time.
