Sharon Carter is a spy, not a soldier. And there's no guarantee she'll be of the ass-kicker variety of spy, either, but rather the surveillance, intel and tech end of espionage. Plus, like her aunt (or great aunt), she's very likely to be British (unlike her American comic book counterpart).

And who is Marvel Studios more likely to use as Cap's leading lady: an extremely obscure next-door neighbor civvie that no one is going to give a damn about, or the one who's been his main squeeze for the past 50 years in the comics, whose had a central role in a large number of Cap's adventures as Agent 13?

It's kinda like making a Superman movie where his love interest is Lori Lemaris instead of Lois Lane.

Well, not quite like that. Lois Lane is much more well-known to the general audience. The majority of movie-goers don't give a damn about Sharon Carter either, at least not yet. But I agree that a female spy who can actually be involved in the plot is preferable to some random damsel type.

And just because these actresses haven't played badass roles before doesn't mean that they're incapable of doing so. What's wrong with Sharon Carter looking like a girl next door type anyway? Wouldn't that make people less likely to find her suspicious? It seems like that would work in her favor with the espionage and all.

I don't know about making Sharon British. I've said this earlier in this thread, but I'll reiterate--I think the audience would absolutely love to see Cap being thrown for a loop by a quick-witted, tech-savvy, 21st century young American woman, with all the sensibilities that go with having been born in the 80s and growing up in the 90s and 2000s. I know you can achieve much of that with a British character, but I just think the contrast between Cap and a modern-day "all-American girl" would be a great, great dynamic that I wouldn't want to pass up just so that you can say "oh, Sharon is British and therefore you dumb moviegoers can make the connection that she's related to Peggy." Besides, I think a woman who grew up in America would have that much more personally invested in the idea of Captain America than one who grew up in the UK.

I'm okay either way --- British or American. It's not like Imogen Poots hasn't played an American before, and it's not a big stretch to assume that Peggy Carter would have Americanized relatives.

I'm just sayin' that 2 out of the 3 picks are Brits, so it's *possible* that they're intending Sharon to remain English, too. Again, I'm okay either way.

Well I just hope that whichever actress and character that this film goes with presenting as Steve's new Love Interest, especially if it's a new MAJOR one in his life, that they're able to characterize her, along with the actress being able to present her as much in being very likable for the audiences, otherwise we'll definitely have a lot of complaints on how Steve could have either done better or had it better with Peggy.

Hire the best actress possible, and let her and the writer/directors shape the character. Whether its Carter or someone else, theres plenty of room for original characterization.

Agreed. As long as it's an interesting character instead of a cardboard cutout, I firmly believe any of the three named can do a good job of establishing Sharon as a force to be reckoned with.

They may be reworking Agent 13 to be more of an espionage (tech & surveillance) type role rather than a field agent. *If* Black Widow winds up being part of Cap's new "Howling Commandos," along with Hawkeye, as many speculate, then an ass-kicking Sharon Carter becomes redundant and cuts into Widow's schtick.
