Default "Correct" viewing order of movies up to The Avengers?

I said I was going to do this before TA came out, but never did. So, I've decided to watch all of the Marvel Universe movies before seeing The Avengers again for the 4th time . Is this the recommended viewing order? :

1. Iron Man
2. The Incredible Hulk
3. Iron Man 2
4. Thor
5. Captain America

Gives me an excuse to dust off & crank up the theater room.
My wife thinks I'm nuts for wanting to go again.

That's the production order.

If you want the chronological order:

Captain America
Iron Man
Iron Man 2
Incredible Hulk
Thor

I had assumed that the Incredible Hulk took place between Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Tony's performing the consultation role he agreed to do at the end of IM2 when he goes to see Ross at the end of Incredible Hulk.

4. The Consultant (on Thor blu-ray)
5. Thor
6. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer (on Cap blu-ray)

Jon Favs said Iron Man 2 took place before Incredible Hulk.

I did this:

Iron Man
Iron Man 2
The Incredible Hulk
Thor
Captain America: The First Avenger

While Cap takes place before IM1, I watched it last because it ended after all the other ones. Cap's awakening bookended the solos for me. But, IM2 before TIH made sense given the end credits sequence.

Not exactly, some parts of TIH take place before Iron Man 2, other take place after, just like some parts of Thor takes place at the same time of those 2, the production order is the best way to go, expecially because the begining and ending of Cap America take place after the other Marvel movies, and because The Incredible Hulk between Iron Man and Iron Man 2 is a nice break from Tony Stark

Actually Cap comes first if you want to view it in correct chronological order. So it's

Captain America (except for final scene)
Iron Man
The Incredible Hulk
Iron Man 2
Thor
Captain America- final scene

Even THAT wouldn't be "chronologically" correct since, as mentioned earlier, the final scene in TIH takes place AFTER Iron Man 2.

Seeing as how these films are all over the place chronologically, you'll save yourself a lot ot headache by just watching them in production order.

Although, if somebody came along and took all the movies AND The Avengers and cut them all together in the proper order of events, we could have an amazing 13 hour mega-film with all the heroes coming together at the end for a 2 hour climax o_o

What I did was Watch Cap except the final scene, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk up to the scene featured in Iron Man 2, then Iron Man 2 in its entirety and back to finish the rest of Incredible Hulk, then Thor, then The Crow: City of Angels, back to Captain America for the final scene, and finally The Avengers.

This I believe is the recommended viewing.

The last scene in Incredible Hulk was originally supposed to be after the credits and appears to take place at a later date from the rest of the movie. The bulk of Iron Man 2 and Incredible Hulk appear to be taking place more or less at the same time judging by the news reports of the Hulk that appear in Iron Man 2. For that matter Thor appears to be happening at the same time too as Coulson goes off to deal with it in the middle of Iron Man 2 and he shows up mid-way through the Thor film.

I watched them all in preparation of The Avengers and this was the order I watched them in.

1. Captain America. World War II. This is definitely the earliest film.
2. Iron Man. Said to take place about 6 months prior to Iron Man 2.
3. The Incredible Hulk. Iron Man 2 and this one could switch places and it wouldn't really make a difference. I watched TIH first just to spread out the Iron Man movies.
4. Iron Man 2
5. Thor. Of the five films, this one most directly leads into the Avengers with the Loki storyline and him discovering the Tesseract at the end.

Captain America is bookended by two scenes in the present day (with the main bulk of the movie being a giant flashback if you think about it), so I guess it could work as both the first and last viewing.

I would go:

1. Iron Man
2. Iron Man 2
3. The Incredible Hulk
4. Thor
5. Captain America
6. The Avengers

Most of Cap takes place in the past, but it's bookended by scenes set in the present (and after the events of the previous four movies). TIH is mostly set around the same time as IM2 and Thor, but IM2 finishes before TIH so it should go first. And of course, IM2's post-credits scene sets up Thor, while Thor's post-credits scene sets up the Tesseract, which plays a major part in Captain America.

I believe the approximate chronological viewing order for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One is:

1) Captain America: The First Avenger
2) Iron Man
3) Iron Man 2
4) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer
5) Thor
6) The Incredible Hulk
7) The Consultant
8) Marvel's The Avengers

Now that I think about it, I wouldn't be surprised if someone made one big supercut of the films in this order...

How do we know the book end scenes in CAP take place after the other four movies? They could have happened before Fury visits Tony in the first Iron Man - maybe that's the others Fury was speaking of?

I think this all coincided with Furys Big Week which leads right up to TA.

It makes logical and emotional sense that the modern day events in Captain America (him being revived out of his ice cube) take place just before the events of The Avengers, and it's right in line with the comic books.

Exactly. And I think it's in the final issue of "Fury's Big Week" where Fury learns that Rogers has been found in or near Greenland, and he sends Hawkeye to keep an eye on the Tesseract research while he heads out to oversee Rogers's recovery.

The order I do it is...

Iron Man
Iron Man 2
Thor
The Incredible Hulk
Captain America

The reason I do it this way is because IM2 lead directly into Thor, and since TIH, IM2, and Thor all take place around the same time I don't think it really matters which comes first between Thor/Hulk. Cap is last for obvious reasons.
