The third Evangelion Rebuild movie can't come out enough.
I had actually grown tired of all the Eva hype but the Rebuild movies have gotten me excited all over again. The animation is simply amazing. |

Evangelion the series? No. I like Evangelion because it was pretty groundbreaking in many ways and also it's very beloved. So its notable for that. But it's got a lot of problems storytelling wise IMHO.
I think just in terms of best series for an anime I got to go with Cowboy Bebop which is as close to perfection as possible. FLCL is also pretty brilliant but that's just a short little 6 episode show. I need a little more meat than that. My number two is probably Fullmetal Alchemist. When that show first came out around 2004-ish, my friend and I went crazy for it and it just built and built. This was sort of like the height of the anime era, fansubs, BT, etc. (yeah I know, I know). But everyone in college was like discovering anime and fansubs and FMA was like the best show at the time, we were marbles for it.

I agree, it was ground breaking, but, was it the greatest anime of all time, no, far from it. There is a lot more better produced shows out there than this one, IMO. I just got tired of all the emo crying from the main character, it was annoying and the 4 minute pauses of doing nothing but hearing power lines. No, thank you. If I want a thought provoking series, take Serial Experiment Lain for example, despite it had it's 4 min wait time too.
Some of the better produced series, in no order: 1) Seirei no Moribito 2) Eden of the East 3) FLCL 4) Dennou Coil That's just to name a few! |

It's fantastic, with great, lofty ideas, really good storytelling, and internal consistency. But, yeah, it has some problems, particularly some of the characters, and it might be a bit too oblique for its own good.
I'm also going to go with Cowboy Bebop as the best, but I've only watched a handful of series all the way through so I'm not exactly the greatest Anime authority. |

Bebop is one of the best but I really wish it had more than 5 episodes dedicated to the overall story.
Man, Evangelion 3.0 You Can (not) Redo won't be out in theaters in Japan until fall, that means mid-late 2013 USA. |

Eva adressed some very cool concepts / ideas in a very unique way. It touched upon what it is like to be in that 15 to 16 year old age group, where youth and responsibility and expectations all start to come to a peak for the first time.

What's particularly great about Bebop, to me, is that it has so many episodes that are 'stand-alone', so to speak, that don't depend as much on an huge melodramatic arc. Really says something about the pop/pulp sci-fi vibe they got going in which you can do a 'day in the life' like that.

True, it's a big feat to make filler intersting and memorable.
Watanabe pretty much tried the same formula in Samurai Champloo but imo doesn't come even close to achieving the same results. I also really like the stand alone episodes in Ghost In The Shell SAC (1st and 2nd GIG). |
