TV Line:
Quote:
New Supernatural Boss on Returning to the CW Series and 'Resetting' the Mythology
by Vlada Gelman

New Supernatural showrunner Jeremy Carver is coming back to the homestead with a mission: To make the Winchester brothers less complicated and more mature.

A fan-favorite writer from Seasons 3-5 — he was responsible for such memorable episodes as “A Very Supernatural Christmas,” “In the Beginning,” “Mystery Spot” and “Changing Channels” before leaving to executive produce Syfy’s Being Human — Carver says he had to do “a little bit of catching up” on Dean and Sam’s adventures once he decided to return to the CW series.

“It was sort of like an ex-girlfriend; every now and then I’d check in,” Carver tells TVLine of the years he missed while working on Being Human.

Although Carver says he was “really, really impressed with the job [executive producers] Sera [Gamble] and Bob [Singer] did over the last two seasons,” he did notice something during his marathon viewing that he felt could be improved upon. “The one thing that struck me [while] watching Season 7 was I felt like the show got a little bit buried under its mythology,” he says of the year that found Dick Roman trying to start a Leviathan takeover of the human population. “It became a little hard to tell exactly what was going on at times. The longtime fans all deserve intricate plot, but it felt a little burdensome.”

Carver says that he hopes to grip viewers by starting Season 8 with something familiar “like a flashback that lifelong fans or early fans will hopefully appreciate the magnitude of, but new fans can also grasp onto.”

“Resetting our mythology was one idea that I tried to bring into [the show],” he adds.

As for Dean and Sam, their time apart after the elder Winchester disappeared to purgatory, unbeknownst to his brother, will give way to more grown-up versions of the two. For one, Sam decides to take a stab at living a normal life and finds a little romance.

“Part of this season is realizing they didn’t just spend several years together; they really matured in different ways,” explains Carver. “It’s one thing to get in a car with your brother in year one, but eight years later, you’ve both matured and grown. You’re both changing and trying to find out who you are. There’s a lot of that type of exploration for these guys this year.”

Meanwhile, Supernatural creator Eric Kripke – who continues to consult at the CW series, but is spending the bulk of his time on the new NBC drama Revolution – says he has no doubt that the long-running, demon-hunting show is in good hands.

“I love that Jeremy came back,” Kripke tells TVLine. “He learned the family business, went off, and now has come back to the family business – just like Sam! We’re thrilled to have him back. They’re obviously doing all the work, and I’m just cheering them on from the sidelines mostly as a very proud parent.”

That all sounds great and im confidant that Carver can bring back some of the old spark this show had in seasons 1-5. I really wish they would go back to the slightly unsaturated bleak look the cinematography the show used yo have. And I agree about the mythology becoming too much. Used to the show would focus on the horror element but in seasons 6&7 and to a degree in seasons 4&5 it felt like that went out the window.

Really looking forward to the new season.

As much as I love the humor, I think they've gone overboard with it lately. It feels like every other episode is more or less completely comedic. I miss the somewhat somber early days.

I agree. Less humor. Although i do love the funny episodes. I just think it works better if they do one or two funny episodes each season instead of forcing hmnor into every other scene all season.

So glad to read the news! I love Supernatural, but I'm not gonna lie...I really disliked this season. The Leviathan story line had a lot of promise, but it never seemed like it delivered.

But since you bring it up, yeah, I've noticed that the first few seasons had a very different look in terms of cinematography. I miss it.

I agree go back season 4 and 5. Season 1 and 2 were too gray for my taste. Regarding funny episodes, I belive they said they have a follow up to the meta world episode. I think they do a good balancing act.

Yeah, there was very little color in seasons 1 and 2. It was their but subdued as much as possible. Seasons 3-5 started working towards more color, but keeping the dreary look. Season 6 just went into full blown color. Looked like a damn sitcom in the first few episodes of season 6. I think they upgraded to better cameras during the production of season 6 so that could be why the colors pop more.

that's because they had a lot less of a budget lol, I prefer the cinematography from season 4 and on, the production value went way up, a couple of episodes in season 6 looked theater worthy lol.

I think that the villains, while different from season to season ended up being the same. Each season, a big villain appears, more powerful than the last demons they fought and that can whipe out any creature or person with the snap of his finguers but for some plot convenience doesn't kill the brothers until they defeat him in the end of the season with repercussions that will lead to the next big bad in the following season.

The villains are so OP that there can't be a proper fight, even Buffy had some more interesting final fights, i notice that Smallville and Supernatural have this problem with final villains.

At this point. If the brothers die. They would just get resurrected. Heck would Castiel even let them die because of old age ? They might as well have it so that. The brothers can not die like a normal human can

Regarding the look again, the recent episodes do snap back to more normal/toned down look when it comes to serious episodes (Death's Door, Born-Again Identity) and it would also reflect the setting of the episode (western-Sepia, 1940s). So really the colors reflect the episode/ scene. Another example would be the Season 4 episode, It's A Terrible Life. Dean and Sam are living in another life one out of the Supernatural so the colors were normal but when Zach touched Dean's forehead and made him remember, the colors snapped back to grey because they were back to their darker lives.

So the episode titles seem to be this so far:

8x01 "We Need To Talk About Kevin"
8x02 "What's Up, Tiger Mommy"
8x03 "Heartache"
8x04 "Bitten"

I thought I was the only one who noticed how bright the seasons have gotten. Its annoying. Definitely takes away from the horror element. Same for the humor. I love a laugh and a nice blend of humor but the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if we got an episode of Sam and Dean in superhero tights or in a glam rock band. It needs to be a better balance like back to 4. 5 was when I noticed a big spark in the comedic/funny situation episodes. Almost the whole first half of that season was full of laughs that felt out of place in a season about the end of the world.

Doesn't necessarily mean that there will be seasons nine and ten though. But it's good they got their ducks in a row if it does get to that.

I think this show needs :
1. To bring back the HORROR tone from the beginning.
2. Dean's humor and not just that but the brothers taunting themselves (SPN had a lot of humor and it never made it seem like a joke, because it was handled SO DAMN WELL! That's why I'm glad some of the old team is back);
3. A badass villain like Lucy, if not Lucy himself!
4. No more Leviathans or less Leviathans;
5. More Death (the character) and perhaps God? I do hope this season's gonna evolve around that Word Of God stone, maybe with the introduction of Metatron too.

Other than that, what can I say, its cool that we will see Sam trying to live a normal life this time around and I look forward for the show to begin and see what's in store for us! It's great that the contracts have been extended, but I just hope they can keep the quality of the show (even S6 which was the weakest, was good imo) or better yet, IMPROVE the show.

The horror and humor elements have been fine, everything else is kinda terrible. Lucifer's story is over, deal with it, Death is better in small doses, it would diminish the character to have him pop up all the time. God is best left unseen. Also, what is this obsession with having Metatron show up?

True that is all up to ratings and the network reuping the show. But its is nice to hear leads have contracts set for a few yrs. So we don't have to go through the game of rreupping contracts or actors leaving on you.

It is also steady work for the guys. It would be nice to see them in more movies. But I think I would rather have Supernatural around for as long as possible

that true and that is a problem for tv guys to do film when they are on break usually not enough time for them to go do films since they usually take 4-6months give or take on scope of film. Where as tv schedules usually only have like a 3 month break from end of season to start of season. But man oh man i definately love to see jared and jensen do more film work too.
