Default Cell

Dimension Films has acquired rights to Stephen King's latest novel Cell and has set Hostel helmer Eli Roth to direct it, reports Variety.

King's novel is a throwback to his early apocalyptic horror novels. In a single moment, a pulse sent out through cell phones around the world turns every phone user into a crazed, murderous zombie.

Mike Fleiss and Chris Briggs, who with Roth produced Hostel and are readying the sequel, will produce Cell.

The deal marks Dimension's second with King, as the studio prepares to cast the Mikael Hafstrom-directed adaptation of the King novella 1408, which Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski adapted.

"The combination of technology and horror is fun high-concept," Dimension's Bob Weinstein said. "And Eli will make it right after he finishes 'Hostel 2.' "

Roth wants to write the film or co-write it, depending on the time constraints created by his horror sequel, which shoots in Prague.

Eh-- I don't know about this.

Like many recent zombie/virus movies, the Cell novel got off to a good start, but got bogged down and tedious around the middle. I don't think that a movie version of this book will really offer anything new.

I'm sure Eli Roth will try to amp up the gore, however. I suppose that and Stephen King's name attached to the film will insure it makes enough profit, so quality will be a secondary concern here.

Hated Cabin Fever, but loved Hostel, so Eli Roth is indifferent with me, lol. I never heard of this book, probably because I haven't paid attention to my book stores lately, but I'm damn sure I'm going to check it out now. Sounds interesting.

Maybe Eli Roth can be the new Mick Garris and start making all of Stephen King's books into movies.

The movie version of Cell might get done in mid-2007. Here is what Eli Roth said in an interview in Playing Magazine.

I was kind of the horror guy of the moment," Roth told Now Playing Magazine in an exclusive interview, "so we knew that we could set it up at a studio But with several different producers in contention, it was Stephen King's decision, and he said, `Let's give these guys a shot.' So we had it for a window and set it up right away with the Weinstein Company."

Essentially the project became available, Roth's producer Mike Fleiss heard about it, and made sure that Roth's name was one of the first ones mentioned "He asked what I thought of it, and said he thought we'd have a pretty good chance to get it because Stephen King really liked Hostel, which definitely helped."

It's going to be a while before much happens with Cell. He's got to write and direct Hostel 2 within the next few months, and said maybe he'll get to Cell in mid-2007.

It's a good book, but I don't know if Roth could handle it. It's very large scale.
We're talking entire cities and masses of people, not some cabin in the woods or some hostel in the Ukraine (or wherever the hell it was)

Hopefully he can improve upon Cell's ending, which sucks completely
And it seemed to lift a few things from Dawn of the Dead

Such as the commentary on consumerism. He just turned "the mall", into "cell phones"
Not very original

They aren't zombies per-se. A frequency is sent out over the cell phones that causes the direct hearer to go crazy and revert back to primal instincts. If you sort of hear it, you kind of go half crazy.

I enjoyed the book, well up until the ending which was rather lame.
Cant really say Im excited to see it made into a movie simply because I get the feeling its gonna turn into another typical zombie movie. Who knows maybe it wont, I guess we'll see.

Nope. Secret Window is latest. (There are movies after that, but they're short or those little festival indies.)
