It's because some animals can't defend themselves like a human can.

There's that, but I think it's also our tendency to anthropomorphize certain animals like dogs. We see them in purely simplistic terms as eternally innocent and loyal companions, when really they lack the cognitive ability to be vengeful or be tempted by the power that makes men evil. Thus they can't comprehend when evil is done to them by humans. Thus that makes us want to shield them from that terrible side of us.

I hope that made more sense than just a off-tangent rambling.

It does. You could starve and abuse a dog and pet it once a month and it would still be faithful to you and love the one time you give it affection.

You think Michael Vick could have drowned his pit bulls with his bare hands if they were fighting back?

That, and I adore animal-life. I don't value one life more than the other but I do take offense to animal cruelty... alot.

people that grow up on a farm have no problem dealing with animal death. most of us in the western world though are so far removed from it that we have attributed all this extra crap on them

i remember seeing the movie "the help" in theatres with my friend from nigeria. at one point a lady kills a chicken and everyone in the theatre gasped, and my nigerian friend was like what the heck its just a chicken.

also the movie atonement, ppl were freaking out about them shooting horses but no one batted an eye at the pile of dead kids. our values have gotten messed up

I think people should be bothered both by a pile of dead kids and by shooting horses.

My priorities are based on relationships. I'd save a human family member before saving my dog, but my dog before saving a stranger, and I'd kick my enemy in the face and stomp on his hamster.

Can't we value all life? I mean yes human life takes precedent, but if an animal is being treated with cruelty for no reason other than meanness well someone's gonna get an ass beating. Protect and help the innocent that goes for all walks of life. There are some grey areas, but I'm not going to let someone hurt an animal if i can help it.

I realize that violence and massacres like that, sadly, happen all around the world. But,what the hell is wrong with the people in the Middle east?? Tribes fighting each other, terrorism, civilian killings,kidnappings;etc,etc... I know that some good people live in that area, but I'm beginning to think that just nuking the entire region is a good idea.

You have to appreciate that these people live in abject poverty. And that they have been ruled by strongmen, well in most cases, forever. Either dictators or colonial powers.

Thirded. I'd probably take the hamster home, though, poor little guy.

Default And so to war again?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22305444

This was the cause imputed into the argument for going to war against Iraq. Can the US avoid taking that course of action where the evidence is clear?

The US has already intervened by sending arms and soon, anti aircraft missile technology. Sounds a lot like Afghanistan.
