Default Would Sony ever do a deal with Marvel Studios?

Now that the Avengers was such a success, will Sony ever try to do a deal with Marvel Studios to include Spider-Man in their universe? Since they are going with the story about Peter's parents, we know they had a connection to S.H.I.E.L.D. and that could easily fit into an Avengers film.

I also want to see a Secret Wars film at some point. Imagine seeing Spider-Man in a movie like that, where he could get his symbiote costume as he did originally in the comics in outer space. Then that could tie into his own movies.

I highly doubt it - they shat all over Leterrier when he asked to include "Columbia University" in TIH. Also, TAS is trying to stick to a lot of the Ultimate lore - so his father was actually just a scientist for Oscorp who help develop the symbiote as a cure for cancer.

That being said, Spider-Man himself does get recruited for training by Fury during Spidey's second run-in with the GG - so there's still space to tie it all in, but again - Sony is a douchy company in every area that they do business (yes, including Blu-ray).

Does Sony actually own the film rights to Columbia University?

I would think that they would want a piece of the action when it comes to the Avengers, since they would only profit from it. Even Andrew Garfield said he wanted to be in the sequel to Avengers.

Why would Sony make a deal with Marvel when they can just continue to make Spider-Man movies on their own and reap all the reward?

Columbia University is a real university, which Sony have no copyright claim to. You're thinking of Empire State University, the fictional college that Parker is so much a part of.

Ah that's right - I got it backwards:
“I just wanted to call it Empire University – to treat it like a coherent world,” he recalled. “And Sony, who has the rights to Spidey, didn't want us to do that. It was a small thing but something we couldn't do.”

I agree that this is highly unlikely, however....the tables have kinda turned since TIH was in pre-production. With all the box office uncertainty surrounding this new Spidey franchise, Sony could (but probably won't) come to realize they might need/want the boost his Avengers association would provide.

Again I say it almost definitely won't happen, but I could certainly understand the motivation on Sony's part now vs. then.

Basically forever as long as they keep making movies.

However no one has ever been able to equivocally tell me what the deadline on these franchises would be if a new movie was not made considering Fox hasn't done **** with Daredevil and FF for years.

didn't they just recently struck a deal where marvel would get all the rights to merchandising, with them getting less of an input on films?

could you imagine that though? spidey's marvels batman money making wise, so iI'd imagine the numbers would be even more astronomical.

If they could make enough money off of it they would probably think about it.

In a hypothetical situation where Sony sells the rights to Spidey back to Disney/Marvel, I wonder what kind of deal it would take. Probably nine figures. And maybe a percentage of the box office from movies featuring Spider-Man?

The success of The Avengers has proven that Disney/Marvel don't really need Spider-Man, though. So they can afford to wait. Sony's not doing well at all right now.

As of now, The Avengers and all of its subsidiary franchises are Marvel Studio's Spider-Man, Batman and Superman all rolled into one.

But its Spider-Man, he is practically the icon of Marvel. If they want to do Secret Wars or Civil War, they need Spider-Man.

they made a 1994 unreleased FF film, and didn't make an official one until 2005...

no one 'needs' Spider-Man per se to tell a specific story. He's a single character that can be substituted by others, if necessary.
And, of course, he works best as a solo character, not as a part of an ensemble.

But its Spider-Man! And for Secret Wars, if they did not include the symbiote/Spider-Man story, I would just be really annoyed, along with a ton of other Spidey fans.

Same with Civil War... one of the biggest moments is Spider-Man unmasking himself. It would just feel incomplete.

IF (and I pray to the FSM every day that this won't happen) they have to do a CW storyline in the movies *sigh*, you don't need Spidey for it. Really. Just have another hero without public identity unmask himself. It's not that hard to do.
But of course, CW was crap. Better than every event Bendis wrote, but crap nevertheless.
Also, in the MCU - so far - there is no need for hero registration. There are only a handful and SHIELD is fully aware about their identities.

I highly doubt it unless ASM under-performs. As it stands now, Spider-Man is a big enough earner that Sony would see no cash incentive in dealing with another studio. If the reboot falters, maybe they'll see the increased earning potential of more directly tying their series into Marvel's.

I'm not too fussed about it though. Like X-Men, Spidey stands fine on his own, and Marvel have plenty of characters to play with.

My priority would be getting the Fantastic Four back from FOX. They would fit great into the Marvel film universe and god knows they deserve better than FOX have done so far.

Even though a lot of fans didn't like Spider-Man 3 it still made over 900 million worldwide.

As I've said in many prior threads: Why would either side actually want to do this? Specifically, why would Disney even give them the time of day? What would *Disney* get out of any such deal? Note that "exposure" is not a good answer, because in exchange for exposure, you've given them *the ability to sabotage and blackmail a future movie*. All Sony would have to do to extort a better deal would be to sue over a contract dispute at a late stage of film production.

There really isn't any scenario where a crossover movie would actually be in both studios' interest. Somebody would be basically giving away the farm, it just depends on who.
