Community Directors Are in Running to Helm the Captain America Sequel

While Captain America had to share director Joss Whedon with five other superheroes in this May's Avengers, Vulture hears that the search is narrowing for someone to helm the patriotic hero's own personal sequel. Insiders tell us that a field of ten directors has been whittled to just three for the follow-up to last summer's hit: George Nolfi, the writer-director of The Adjustment Bureau; F. Gary Gray, best known for directing The Italian Job; and, naturally … Community's Anthony and Joseph Russo?

“Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios’ president of production] is a ‘vibe guy,'” one source familiar with the talks explains about the unusual decision to include a pair of Emmy-winning comedy guys in the mix. Adds the insider, “He likes to see if he gets along with people before he’ll decide about spending the next two years with them. And apparently, they hit it off with Kevin in the room.” Though the pair have worked mostly in TV, directing other shows such as Happy Endings (which they also executive produce, along with Community) and Arrested Development, it wouldn’t be their first feature. They co-directed both the 2006 Owen Wilson comedy You, Me and Dupree and 2002’s Welcome to Collinwood, neither of which featured much in the way of action and/or shield throwing.

Of course, this is Marvel, where you never know quite what is going to happen: After all, late last year, Feige decided at the last minute to fire Thor 2 director Patty Jenkins, so even the “winner” might find him (them?) self (selves?) brushed away at some later point. But in the meantime, we’re told that additional meetings with all three candidates are being scheduled for early next month, and that a decision could be made as early as mid-April.

I'd go Nolfi, purely because I found Adjustment Bureau to be a great little movie... It'll probably be the Community guys though.

What Kenneth Branagh treatment? The man left of his own accord and on good terms.

As for the new guy, I trust MS to make the decision without much input from me. They've done well so far.

Gary Gray doesn't fill me with confidence. None of them really make me feel like "wow, I need to see what they do with this". I guess I'll need to know their pitch.

I think Nolfi gives me the most confidence given his filmography is not very extensive, and he was the writer on The Bourne Ultimatum. I think that makes him the favorite pick for me. His directing career is young, so he doesn't have the track record for mediocre films that F. Gary Gray has.

Trying to figure out what any of them have in common, or what particular skill-set Marvel was looking for.....if it's F. Gary Gray, could it be an urban angle, and they're looking to bring Falcon in as a major character? Or, here's a thought....Nolfi apparently has a working relationship with Matt Damon (Bourne Ultimatum, Adjustment Bureau, Ocean's Twelve); could Marvel be looking for entree with Damon to play....say....Winter Soldier...???

go with Gray... he's worked with Sam Jackson before in The Negotiator.. He can also bring in Kevin Spacey..

Spent some time looking at their respective IMDB pages and they seem a little underwhelming, don't they? Gray seems like a crime movie guy, which would be cool if this was Punisher or something but seems a little weird for Cap. And I liked the Adjustment Bureau but that's that guy's only credit.

Too early to tell, I guess. I wish i could see the other 7 names on that list tho.

Gray did do the Italian Job remake but also . . . Be Cool .

Gray at least has experience doing studio films and has worked with bigger budgets and actors.

I think right now I'd give the Russo duo a try since the others on the list are little lackluster and they seem to have a good understanding of the comic book world.

None of these choices really inspire me with confidence. And neither does the comment "He wants to see if he gets along with them if they are working with each other for 2 years".

Get along = tell them what to do. What Marvel has done is amazing, but i think the execs and producers need to take a step back and let a director create his own vision and make the film he wants.

Branagh is still producing, from my understanding and seeing him listed on IMDB..

As far as these director choices...If I HAD to pick...I guess Nolfi, but frankly, I wouldn't choose any one of them (especially not the community guys)
