Just re-listening to part of "Drink Up Me Hearties" from Pirates: At World's End. Damn, I love from 2:18 on so, so, so much. The love theme in the score is just wonderful. Tracks like this are what give me hope for the MOS score.

Klaus Badelt wrote the original Pirates theme. Zimmer just nerfed it and kept the beatings coming.

While I don't want to necessarily dispute that, the PotC: CotBP soundtrack was a clusterf**k to finalize. Everyone from Zimmer's "school", including him, was brought in to help out. It may very well be true that Badlet came up with it, but I wouldn't be 100% sure.

I'm not talking about the original Pirates theme. I'm talking about the theme heard from 2:18 onwards, which I believe exists only in the third film.

I don't know, his theme really just sounds like a mess of horns and flutes with the BANG BANG BANG of the drums.

He doesn't make many memorable themes, that's for sure. I expect Superman to sound a lot like all the rest of his stuff, but not stand out in any way.

Fixed your video. And you're right, that's the "Up is Down" theme, and only features in the 3rd one. Definitely a Hans-only composition. Here's the full version of it:

It's one of my favorite themes from that series (the At World's End score is BY FAR the best of the bunch, imo).

I keep forgetting that one. I think it's just as good as Da Vinci Code and Thin Red Line... there's not much synth and electronic backing, and Zimmer really lets loose. It pretty much elevates an overlong, bloated film. It's a shame Zimmer just wasn't able to do the same for TDKR.

It'd be nice if Zimmer was able to combine the styles of At World's End with the more somber, reflective side of Thin Red Line.

Yeah...that's kind of crazy talk. It also rubs me the wrong way when people say he didn't give Batman his own theme, not only did he make one, it was also one of the most inspiring pieces I've heard in the genre.

To be honest, if we're talking about the same theme, I didn't like it that much. Which piece of music do you refer to as Batman's theme?

That same piece that appears at the end of "why do we fall?" that features throughout the trilogy.

I love it, gets me extremely pumped and genuinely makes me feel like cheering whenever Bruce does something heroic.

Oh, then we're not talking about the same piece. See, based on the frequency and moments of its use throughout the trilogy, I'd say his theme is the one you can hear when he throws 2FAce off the building, when he says "This isn't a car", when the kid says "No, it's Batman" and the Bat appears out of the smoke carrying the bomb, etc etc.

Yeah, that's the one. And in BB when he suits up for the final fight. I think that's the theme, really. It's the one mostly used throughout the trilogy and is always heard when Batman does something heroic and/or cool.

And I have to say, it's pretty underwhelming as a theme. I don't mind it as a cue, but as a theme it's just too slow and understated.

To be honest even that "theme" is better than half of the stuff being done with Superheroes at the moment.

I'm struggling to find any other work aside from perhaps Elfman's work on Spider-Man or Hulk that really stands out.

Well... I liked Armstrong's work on TIH. I don't care about Elfman and his Spidey theme at all and I appreciate what he did with Hulk, but ultimately the theme was a tribute/ripoff of the TIH TV show.

But yeah, I find it hard to remember any CBM soundtracks that stand out to me as of late.

I'll tell you how memorable Elfman's "Hulk" theme is; it's gotten to the point that whenever I read the comics that theme pops into my head. It so utterly encapsulated the character perfectly, and really to me it stands up there with the classic Superman march.

I'm confident that Zimmer can bring the goods.

I have no doubt that Zimmer can bring the goods. He almost always does.

But Elfman's theme in Hulk was actually one of the 3 themes from the TIH series. I was much more impressed with his desert chase music.

The "Main Titles" theme was from the tv show?

This one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie1waJKUA2s ?

Yes. The main cue anyway, the "catchy" part. I wish I could tell you the exact part from that link, but youtube's blocked from work. When I get back home I'll make sure to tell you and then link you the TIH series theme I'm talking about.

However, although I strongly dislike Elfman in general, I think his work on Hulk was one of his best, if that means anything to anyone.
