Odd one out: Dean, as much as I like the guy.

Actually all 3 in the middle seem like odd ones out to me. Rouths expression is just

Welling fits like a glove, imo.

I agree. From Reeve to Cavill. Everything in the middle is just the muddy transition. Reeve finally giving the torch to Cavill.

Although Cain and Welling were both TV show stars rather than film stars, I've included them anyway as they effectively played the character for more hours on screen than their film counterparts. And I know Welling was technically playing Clark Kent and never played Superman until the last few minutes of the Smallville finale, but he was pretty much Superman in all aspects other than the costume he was wearing. Welling has actually played the Clark Kent/Kal-El character for longer than anyone so both him and Cain deserve to be counted amongst the modern Supermen, IMO.
In terms of looks I think Reeve and Cavill nail it. Broad features, strong jawlines, thick necks, intense eyes. It helps with Superman's physicality when the face conveys strength and determination like theirs do. Welling is in there too, though he had to maintain a boyish haircut in Smallville and never really worked out to the extent that the movie actors did - he's a naturally big guy so I often wonder how he would have looked having undergone the training regime that Cavill did. Cain and Routh are bottom of the list for me in terms of looks. I don't think Cain ever really looked like Superman to me, facially at least - there's just something not right. And when you look at the guys above, Routh's face looks too skinny and narrow in comparison. He was quite young at the time of Superman Returns though, and in fairness he's matured a bit in recent years and ironically looks more Superman-like now than then, having 'filled out' a bit. |

IMO, Routh is easily the worst Superman out of the bunch. Lois & Clark and Smallville had at least had some amazing episodes.

Yeah, next to the other guys he pales away. Damn, that Superman was a sad poor sod.
Cavill looks a little mopy too, but that's until he unleashes hell. HELL! HELL!

Haha. I think Cavill still has a cool confidence about him - it's subtle.

Cavill has a smirk, he looks great. Routh is doing the Will Ferrell eyes.

wow...so much hate for Routh. I think it's time to let it go. It's been 6 years
. Not that it matters, but I changed his picture to a better one.

Absolutely. In the above picture. I'm more referring to his years before embracing his alter ego.

Man, I love that shot of Cavill.
They need to release that puppy as a poster.

Agree with the bold...but I must say, the new picture is even worse. A brunette Superman with a boyish face and a creepy expression...not feeling it. Then again, I am strict that way. I have extremely high standards for an actor playing Superman, especially in relation to the look matching the source material.

That's better. I actually didn't mind Routh as Superman all that much. That picture was just sticking out like a sore thumb compared to the others. Oddly enough that expressionless picture was what popped into my head when we got to see this new Cavill one.

I deliberately tried to find a picture where he's staring directly at the camera with his chest facing forwards, like the others in the picture. There's very few official promo shots from SR where he has that pose.
There's one with folded arms which is just like Cavill's pose in the new pic, but I could only find a very small 131x326 version of the picture despite extensive googling. If anyone has a high-res version I'd appreciate it?

^This. I really don't see Superman in Dean Cain. I never got into the whole Smallville shtick, so to include Welling is silly to me, but that's me personally. Routh was a Barbie Doll or a knockoff of Reeve, so technically, he's supposed to be Reeve. So I agree with the above post. Reeve and Cavill look like the real Supermen regarding my tastes in my favorite character.
