Then Burke bought out Gluckstern after 1 lame duck season in Winnipeg and 2 years in Phoenix but couldn't bring in any new investors. Then he sold the team to Steve Ellman with Wayne Gretzky as part owner. Moyes was brought in as an investor to help keep the team in Arizona. Eventually he became sole owner who lost 100s of millions of dollars and had to declare bankruptcy. Every season in the desert was a losing season financially, in the arena not designed for hockey in Phoenix and an area too far away from the fanbase in Glendale.

Economy was completely different in the mid 90's. The Canadian dollar was very weak. Those two teams were losing money hand over fist. At that time, out of all the Canadian teams only the Leafs and Habs were turning a profit. The Oilers almost wound up in Houston at one point.

Although if you're going to blame Bettman for moving the Jets and Nords, then you've got to give him credit for bringing the Jets back last year too. Double-edged sword there.
Yeah the Winnipeg Arena was a piece of **** that should've been replaced in the early 90s but funding fell through and the Jets didn't own their crappy arena and only had to rely on ticket revenue and the small broadcasting revenue. Nobody wanted to own the team without a new building on the way. Though if the NHL owned the team for 3 years like the Coyotes maybe that would've been enough time to get a deal done for a new one. Instead one was finally finished in 2004 and Bettman quielty met with future Jets ownership and said we may have a team for you in the future.

Eh screw them. Both sides...The faster they come back the faster I have to pay $80 for upper bowl seats and $15 for water and a hot dog.

Hockey is bigger than the NHL.

We can watch players like Malkin, Gonchar, Kulemin Thursday morning with MMK. The KHL webcast their games.

Why does it not surprise me that the head of the NHLPA is Donald Fehr? The same man who (when he was head of the MLBPA) was embarrassed by Congress for refusing to allow the baseball players to be tested for PEDs during the steroid hearings.

That's the problem with labour stoppages: it makes hockey fans delusional.

NHL preseason games canceled

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/84...-games-sept-30

Quote:
NEW YORK -- The NHL has canceled all preseason games through Sept. 30, the league announced Wednesday.
It is believed that more cancellations -- including the New Jersey Devils-New York Islanders preseason contest at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Oct. 2 -- will follow as the lockout continues, sources told ESPNNewYork.com.

I suspect we're going to lose a third of the season, but then an agreement will be reached.

May they have the sense to see things have been going good, and that a lockout will just hurt.

how many points are you awarding for collective bargaining sessions attended? How about guffaws at press conferences?

I've picked Scott Hartnell, Tom Gaglardi and Ryan Kesler for most times "I really feel for the fans right now," can be said insincerely over one cancelled season.

http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/ey...fix-for-day-12

Quote:
When Friday rolls around, the NHL and NHLPA finally will resume CBA negotiations, the first time they have talked officially in the nearly two weeks since the lockout started. They won't return to their economic framework stalemate but will start on the other things. Wayne Scanlan talked to a mediator who said small agreements on Friday could lead to bigger agreements later ... just get that ball rolling."The fact they're going in Friday with an agenda that is much less contentious ... something more neutral and probably on subjects that are much easier to discuss and negotiate on is, I think personally, a fantastic strategy." (National Post)

Momentum from any agreements or not, the NHL will have its hands full trying to crack the NHLPA. Donald Fehr has done all he can to make this as cohesive a group as possible, and they have some serious resolve and strong representation. It's a good thing for the players; doesn't sound so good for the NHL and fans who want to see hockey return. (Globe and Mail)

• Only a small portion of locked-out players have headed overseas to play. Many remain in North America running their own practices with teammates to stay in playing shape. That includes Tampa Bay, where members of the Lightning were practicing on Wednesday with one small problem: there wasn't a second goalie. To remedy this, forward Ryan Malone donned the pads (the picture in the story is worth seeing).

While he was having a little fun and realizing how hard it is for goalies to move around, he still wasn't sounding very optimistic about the lockout.

"It doesn't look good. Most of the guys, we're in there talking, the way it sounds, we're prepared to be locked out the whole year." (Tampa Times)

NHL offers 50-50 split to players

http://espn.go.com/nhl/story/_/id/85...elated-revenue

Quote:
The NHL has offered a new labor deal to its locked-out players, proposing a 50-50 split in hockey-related revenue and a full 82-game season starting Nov. 2.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the offer Tuesday in Toronto, where the league and the players' union discussed core economic issues rather than continuing to focus on secondary issues.
"We hope we've given our best shot," Bettman told reporters.

NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr said that the offer includes a deal that is "at least six years in length" and acknowledged that the union will respond to the proposal "sooner rather than later."

The NHLPA has scheduled a conference call for 5 p.m. ET to discuss the offer with the players' negotiating committee and the union's executive board. But a source told ESPNNewYork.com that it is "doubtful" that the union will formally respond Tuesday.

The offer includes a proposal designed to "protect" players from salary reductions in the initial years, a league source told ESPN.com. The league also has removed earlier proposals for systemic changes to player contracts, according to the source.

A source with knowledge of the offer told ESPNNewYork.com that the players' primary concern -- that their current contracts are honored -- is addressed in the proposal. To protect the contracts already in the books, there is a mechanism in place in the league's latest offer to defer payments based on future growth, according to the source.

The NHL's owners have remained adamant that players accept a significant drop from the 57 percent of revenue they received under the salary cap in the last contract. The players don't want what they consider more massive cuts at a time when the overall revenue pot reached record numbers ($3.3 billion) last year.
The players would be IDIOTS not to accept this.

I have a sneaking suspicion there will be some good news arising from this later in the evening.

This is based on nothing but intuition, so if I'm wrong I'm a fool.

apparently they would need to reach a deal by October 25th, in order to preserve the 82 game season.

I wouldn't mind a shortened season; my Canucks won't be so bushed come the playoffs, and can choke in the finals instead of choking in the first round.
