I'm currently watching Linkara's video right now. I've been waiting for this review for awhile, even when he said he wasn't going to do it. I do agree with him on Spider-man and the 'great responsibility' thing. I mean I love Spidey, he's my favorite superhero, but even I can admit that he's flawed nowadays.
Honestly, Manic, I agree with your thought of bringing Uncle Ben back and tell him he didn't listen.

Honestly? I REALLY didn't like the One More Day video. I thought the bit in the middle of him yelling at Joe Quesada was kind of awful. 'Cause it wasn't funny or entertaining, it was just him actually being angry and yelling.

That's how I feel about all Linkara reviews, really. He's not all that funny to me but I like seeing his opinions on comics. In this case, his entire rant in the middle about how the comic was calling it's readers losers was something I totally disagreed with and thought he was reaching a little bit on (but I think he's always reaching so he can find humor anyway). I see the message the book was trying to make and I do agree that people turn to escapism for things they don't have in their life. Adventure. The fact that he compared cops and firemen to that just showed he did not get it in my opinion. While policemen and firemen are in fact heroes, they don't exactly live glamorous lives and they are kept in check by the law. I'm sure Linkara knows all of this but just wanted to make jokes. He can come off as a comic book Nostalgia Critic at times with all of his obnoxious screaming and yelling. Just not nearly as funny.

Honestly, his opinions on comics are kind of weird. Like, when he talks about what does and doesn't work in a story he kind of sounds like some kind of hyper-logical script writing computer that things there's a very specific formula to what makes stuff good.

Also he tends to bend over backwards to justify his liking ****** stuff. Like the mental hoops he jumps through to make Power Rangers sound deeper than it is. I mean, I like Power Rangers, but it's mostly stupid and I like it for being mostly stupid.

As for the losers thing... I actually kind of agree with the guy here, the bit in One More Day kind of did come off as saying that people like that are losers, it really seemed like what they were going for especially since they were doing the "Peter Parker, this is how your life could have turned out differently and by differently I mean worse" thing. But unlike Linkara I also kind of agree. I think people who turn to fiction for escapism to fill a void in their lives instead of actually trying to do something to change their lives and make them more fulfilling are kind of losers. And I figure myself into that assessment.

Still, the biggest problem with that rant is that it was really long and not funny or entertaining or interesting at all. It was just kind of a waste of everyone's time. Felt kind of like padding.

I think Linkara nitpicks harder than most others on Channel Awesome, but he still raises a few good points in his comic reviews. I admit he did lose me during the whole "they're calling us losers" bit, but I agreed with a majority of his OMD review. This wasn't an objective review like when he reviews some random PSA or obscure 2-issue wonder; this was pure fanboyish rage born out of a sense of betrayal, and I was right there with him. I haven't bought a Spider-Man comic in years.

I thought his assessment of weighing Peter and MJ's marriage against May's life in terms of number of healthy years she has left came of as really cold.

Okay, that didn't sit well with me either.

I think Peter should've let May die rather than giving up his marriage, but not because May was old and Mary-Jane's ass hand was worth more than an elderly life. For one, who the F makes a Faustian deal? Other than Faust, I mean. For another thing, by avoiding May's death, Peter was pretty much skirting over the consequences for his stupid ass decision to reveal his identity to the public.

I mean, making the deal or any version of the deal is, in universe, clearly a bad decision, but Peter should be sorely tempted. Yeah, May's old, but she's also a person in his life who means something to him.

I do agree that having it be MJ who got shot and having the condition of Mephisto saving her be that she forgets everything about Peter and everyone forgets they were ever married except for Peter would have made for a better story, mainly because of more drama and Mephisto's motivations would have made more sense beyond "I'm doing this because Joe Q wants it and I have no real motivation to do it of my own."

But Joe Quesada wasn't interested in good Spider-Man stories. If he were, he wouldn't have commissioned One More Day.

Also, I found Linkara's analysis of Spider-Man as a character kind of, I don't know, condescending? I mean, yeah, Spider-Man is sometimes written to be pretty immature and irresponsible, especially in recent years, but that's not really a fault of the character and it does varry a lot from writer to writer. I kind of get that that was what he was trying to say but the way he said it kind of bugged me. A lot of his opinions on things, both real and fictional, come off as wicked judgmental to me.

And his point about Peter's life insurance felt unfair to me. I'm pretty sure the point of that wasn't to say that Peter never bothered to get life insurance, but to say that he was too poor to afford it.

Couldn't afford life insurance? Peter and MJ had a dual income with no children, and Peter still had a regular day job as a school teacher at the time (as opposed to taking freelance photos like people still want him to do). That was just irresponsible.

Not saying it made sense, just saying that I think that was what they were going for.

That was my exact problem with the story (and any reboot for that matter). It's pretty much the writers going "Alright, we screwed up. Do-over." It was especially insulting for Spider-man because these were relatively recent events that I was waiting to see the true fallout of. How this changes the character forever. The X-men sure as hell have been through a crapload of this stuff and kept on truckin'. That's part of the fun. They're pretty much nothing like how they started in the 60s. None of them. I wish all comic books were like that.

Instead we just keep getting do-overs where the writers use the excuse "We wanted to go back to the beginning to find the core of the character. What made him so popular.". That's just a complicated way of saying "We have no idea where to go from here. We kind of wrote ourselves into a hole, there." It's frustrating and why I'm not only hesitant on any Spider-man books but on DC's entire New 52 line-up.

Don't get me started on the New 52. I haven't bought a single DC book since.

To be fair, The Other was a terrible storyline that seems to be ignored in continuity and by most of the Spider-Man fanbase, so I'm not sure why Linkara would reference a plot point from it. There were some other nitpicks, but overall, I liked his review. In fact, I think I enjoy every review of his that isn't a PSA comic or an advertisement.

I can't tell if it's because he's under weight, or because he's a good weight, but keeps wearing his 'fat' clothes, which make him look underweight.

I think its just stress, they are in post production of The Cinema Snob Movie right now and I'm guessing that + making all the reviews and stuff takes a toll.

Snob has lost some weight, it seems. Linkara's review of the Kiss Psycho Circus comic made me want to go track down all the issues.

I have the tpb and not sure if I want it anymore. Let me know, I'll have to dig it out of storage if you're interested.

In Spoony's latest video of him trying out a bunch of European candy and beer, he mentions that one of the drinks given to him came from Diamanda Hagan. I guess not everyone on Channel Awesome has cut him off.

Meanwhile, Critic and That Sci-Fi Guy put out a pretty funny review of the first Total Recall.
