Default Syfy Nearing Series Order For "12 Monkeys" Adaptation

'12 Monkeys' Adaptation Near Series Order at Syfy (Exclusive)
10:40 AM PDT 7/22/2013 by Lesley Goldberg
Original movie producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle are on board the project, which will be written by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett.

Syfy is continuing its push into the post-apocalyptic landscape.

The cable network, which previewed Ron Moore's Helix at Comic-Con, is adapting Terry Gilliam's 1995 feature 12 Monkeys, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The movie starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth's population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. In a bid to earn a pardon, Cole will use an imperfect science of time travel to help collect information on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys.

Feature film producers Chuck Roven and Richard Suckle from Atlas Entertainment -- one of the production companies on board the Universal film -- submitted the pitch, which is being eyed as a 90-minute backdoor pilot that would eventually lead to a straight-to-series order in a fashion similar to Syfy's Battlestar Galactica. Terry Matalas (Nikita, Terra Nova, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Travis Fickett (Nikita, Terra Nova) will pen the script, with 24's Jon Cassar on board to direct. "We have a great pilot, we're now flushing out what the rest of the series might be," Syfy president of original programming Mark Stern told The Hollywood Reporter.

Willis, Brad Pitt, Jon Seda and Madeleine Stowe starred in the feature, which earned Pitt an Oscar nomination for his supporting turn. The film grossed $168 million worldwide. For its part, the film was inspired by Chris Marker's 1962 short La Jetee.

12 Monkeys comes as Syfy looks to beef up its original scripted fare following the successful launch of pricey drama Defiance. The network is looking to add five to six new original scripted projects for 2014 to join Helix, which also was picked up straight to series.

"We're looking at short orders, maybe eight to 10 [episodes] as opposed to 13," Stern said. "Some may be [split runs of] 10 and 10. Our goal is to do five or six original scripted series a year and a big tentpole event miniseries that could also possibly serve as a backdoor pilot to a series as well the way that Battlestar Galactica did. It's an exciting time for us."

"We're really trying to figure out what our next year is going to be," he added. "We have Helix in January, we're trying to figure out what our summer series is going to be. We have a lot of different options. We know that Defiance is going to come back in the summer, the last six episodes of Warehouse 13 are going to be back along with Defiance. Then there's this big gray zone after that of what follows. We definitely have a miniseries we want to try to do for December of 2014 -- Jamie Foxx's is a series of half-hours we might do for Halloween of 2014. We're looking to do a big four-hour miniseries -- a tentpole mini -- at the end of 2014 and we're trying to figure out what that's going to be."

"We have a half-dozen scripts that are all pretty amazing in their own way," Stern said of Syfy's development pipeline. "It's a return to our roots in terns of science-fiction: cool, interesting push-the-genre science fiction. Some we're looking at doing straight to series because you really want to give them the flexibility and do a closed-ended arced run. Some of them are going to be traditional pilots, then we'll decide and they may be a bit more episodic."

12 Monkeys joins a development roster that also includes Bryan Fuller's High Moon and Proof, from M. Night Shyamalan, among others.
Glad to see Syfy do some actual sci-fi recently (Continuum, Defiance, Helix). I'd be interested to see how this might work as a series.

UGGGHHHH?! But why SyFy?! They haven't produced anything of quality since Caprica. BSG and Caprica were literally the only shows theyve done in recent years that didn't look like a bad b-movie adaptation or something. An actual 12 Monkeys series deserves more care than SyFy will give this. I mean seriously, it'll end up looking like freaking Haven or Sanctuary. And those are honestly two of the only shows I've ever stopped watching after more than a season. I was able finish Eureka before those an I fear this will look the same. Oh and, I forgot about Alphas but still, as good as it was it still didn't necessarily look amazing

Though, granted, I do agree with you on their stuff in recent years. Haven/Sanctuary/Warehouse 13 do nothing for me. I love Being Human, but that's more supernatural/horror than sci-fi. But recently, it feels like they actually are trying to bring the sci-fi back to Syfy, and actually do it well. Them getting David Slade to direct Helix is proof enough for me.

They have me interested in it, loved the film. They definitely have a have to be cautious and learn from The Killing which had red herrings every 2 episodes in the first season as the film had a red herring. Progress has to be made but with an end game in mind and not dragging things out.

See I haven't heard anything about Helix yet and haven't seen Defiance. I do hope they can bring back some quality and I will agree with you that Being Human is quality. It honestly doesn't even feel like a SyFy show half the time. More like an NBC one or something. Damn, can't believe I forgot BH. It's just weird the level of crap SyFy produces, you'd think people that do this kinda stuff for a living would understand quality. I often wonder if actors sit around reading scripts like "Jesus Christ what are they thinking? Is this really where they're taking my character this year?" Stuff like that, ya know? It's actually astonishing to me the level of crap that gets produced and aired. If I was an actor on one of these shows I'd get openly pissed and be like "Dude! Come the **** on! This is so stupid! People are going to hate this!"

’12 Monkeys’ Drama Gets Pilot Order At Syfy
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

EXCLUSIVE: Syfy has given a cast-contingent pilot order to 12 Monkeys, a drama series based on the 1995 Universal Pictures/Atlas Entertainment film directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt. The 60-minute pilot, produced by Universal Cable Prods and Atlas Entertainment, was written on spec by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (Terra Nova). It follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race. Filming is tentatively slated to begin in November. Atlas’ Charles Roven (The Dark Knight trilogy), who produced the feature, and Richard Suckle will executive produce, with Matalas and Fickett, repped by by ICM Partners and manager Brian Lutz, co-executive producing.

This is Syfy’s second consecutive pilot order to a sci-fi feature adaptation — last month the network greenlighted a 90-minute pilot for Dominion, a drama based on characters from the 2010 feature Legion. 12 Monkeys was among several hot projects at Syfy, which may not be done with its orders (pilot or straight to series.) The other top contenders included Clandestine, from actor-writer Todd Stashwick and artist Dennis Calero; Proof, from Marti Noxon and M. Night Shyamalan; and Sojourn, from Phil Levens, Jason Blum and Lionsgate.

I liked the movie so I'm interested if this goes to series. For those who've seen the movie did he stop the army of the 12 monkeys? or did he just fullfill his part in making the future come true.

I love the movie but I'm really not sure this will work that well as a series. Part of what made the movie so perfect was weird atmosphere of everything. I don't know if they'll be able to duplicate that, but I'll give it a shot. Still, no one will ever match the craziness of Brad Pitt's Jeffrey Goines.

I love the film, so I'll give it a go. The two will never be the same so not going to stress about it ruining anything just yet. I just hope they can work it out where it actually ends up being pretty good (as stated before Syfy and quality aren't exactly bed buds).

’12 Monkeys’ Picked Up To Series At Syfy
By NELLIE ANDREEVA

Syfy has given a series order to 12 Monkeys, a drama based on the 1995 Universal Pictures film directed by Terry Gilliam. The project, written/co-executive produced by Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett (Nikita) has received a 12-episode order for a January 2015 premiere. 12 Monkeys was one of two pilots most recently ordered by Syfy. The other, Bryan Fuller’s High Noon, is not going forward.

12 Monkeys, from Universal Cable Prods. and Atlas Entertainment, producer of the movie, follows the journey of a time traveler (Aaron Stanford) from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race. Amanda Schull, Noah Bean and Kirk Acevedo also star. Natalie Chaidez (V) serves as showrunner and executive produces alongside Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Richard Suckle. Jeffrey Reiner directed and executive produced the pilot. “12 Monkeys is a captivating time travel adventure and high stakes race against the clock,” said Syfy president Dave Howe. The pickup of 12 Monkeys comes on the heels of Syfy renewing Ron Moore’s drama Helix for a second season and announcing a return to the longform arena with event series Ascension as the network is shifting towards more serialized fare in the tradition of “space opera” Battlastar Galactica. 12 Monkeys also joins another recently ordered new Syfy series based on a movie, Dominion, adaptation of the feature Legion.

This is part of SyFy's own dark, gritty reboot of themselves.

And I'm not even being facetious there. Their plans are to make more serious, darker science fiction than the likes of Warehouse 13, Eureka and even Haven.

'12 Monkeys' Producer on Syfy Series: 'It's a Complete Reimagining'
6:28 PM PDT 7/14/2014 by Philiana Ng

"We didn't want to just redo what the movie does," co-executive producer Terry Matalas said of the upcoming 13-episode adaptation.

Don’t expect Syfy’s 12 Monkeys to be a replica of Terry Gilliam’s 1995 movie.

“It’s a complete reimagining,” co-executive producer Terry Matalas told reporters Monday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. “We were all big fans of the original film and had a deep love and respect for the material. We didn’t want to just redo what the movie does.”

“This isn’t a cover band of the film,” added star Amanda Schull. Co-executive producer Travis Fickett echoed that sentiment: “It doesn’t make sense to tell the same story again.”

12 Monkeys centers on a time traveler Cole (Aaron Stanford) from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race.

The team behind the 13-episode series, scheduled for a January 2015 launch, intentionally switched up the rules to freshen things up and differentiate the universe. “Everything from the top down changed,” Matalas said, citing character tweaks like Cole and Dr. Whaley. Having said that, there will be clear homages to characters from the movie, such as Jones. Another change was the lack of ambiguity over its treatment of time travel. The time-traveling visual effects, in fact, were largely inspired by Rian Johnson’s 2012 film Looper.

Executive producer Richard Suckle, who helped produce the Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis film, said discussions about bringing 12 Monkeys to TV took place soon after the original movie was released. But things soon got in the way.

At the end of the day, the producers were itching to do “a gritty time-traveling show,” said Matalas, and felt audiences were ready to dive into a show with a rich mythology as 12 Monkeys. “We wanted it to be grounded and closer to a thriller but that’s not to say we wont play with tone."

“We’re not pulling any punches with the time traveling,” he added.

There will be trips to various time periods, including World War I and the 1980s. “We will definitely travel around [time],” showrunner/executive producer Natalie Chaidez said.

Sounds like they changed enough that it is no longer 12 Monkeys and they are just riding off the movies fame for their own property.
