I didn't see much similarity to Batman Begins to be honest.

The whole travelling around the world bit reeked off Btamn begins which in turns reeks of Donner.Im not sure how I feel about it.
Also not sure how I feel about another Artic fotress or Jorel talking to Clark in it.gives Donner vibes. Not necessary a bad thing the teaser was still wesome but I just dont want to hear fans ***** about ripping off Batman begins and STM

This is one issue I find about trying to make a Justice League movie.

Superman is adopting much of the tone of Batman Begins. Green Lantern can do that. Wonder Woman can do that. Flash can do that. Martian Manhunter can do that. Batman can't do that.

There can't be another Batman film that adopts the tone of Batman Begins, because it will be compared to Batman Begins, meaning that it will (likely) not reach expectations. The new Batman reboot will likely be going for a new tone entirely, which means that this cycle keeps going.

Except that MOS is not similar enough to BB that another Batman reboot couldn't fit in with it while still being different from BB.

The very fact that MOS features an actual superhero with powers changes things entirely.

The best thing that a new Batman can do is establish the character as already in action, and introduce a new, slightly different tone and direction for the character.

This is why I think the next Batman should be a low-key, cerebral detective story featuring The Riddler. Perhaps along the lines of the new Sherlock Holmes without the comic relief.

The 'tone' that MOS is going for isn't unique to BB. It's not markedly different from Xmen or an Abrams movie, either. It's all in how the filmmaker delivers the story, not whether it falls precisely into one style/feel/approach...and despite how early it is, this same approach can be taken while allowing for other heroes/phenomenon, etc. depending on what that storyteller wants to do.

To comment on the whole "traveling the world" bit; it would only be a BB thing, if BB invented it first, which it didn't. Bruce Wayne traveling ther world in the years before he became Batman has been in the comics since...1989, maybe before that even. Clark Kent doing that is something that the comics have also done, though mildy. I can only think of Birthright, and Odyssey. But the fact is, it's there; not a BB influence or MOS invention.

No you're wrong, Christopher Nolan invented travelling, darkness, and seriousness.

Superman did traveling around the world way before Batman 89 and Batman Begins actually: In Man of Steel by John Byrne and that came out in 86. In fact there's a cool story in which Clark is in Bhutan and meets Bruce Wayne coming down the stairs of a temple.

I just hope this movie doesn't feel like its drained of fun like Nolan's Batman movies.

They had plenty of fun in them.

The Nolan films had the perfect balance of everything.

I wonder if they will try and make Wonder Woman dark and gritty too. It would probably end up with a True Blood feel.

´´Dark and Gritty``. It's getting so tiring hearing this, especially in relation to MOS. It doesn't look dark or gritty. It's like if a film is serious and not campy, it's dark and gritty. Sigh... and MOS looks like nothing like BB. Sure I can understand the comparison with Clark traveling and figuring things out inward but other than that, visually it looks different (better and more unique might I add), MOS seems to have a larger scope and of course the fantastical elements that come with Superman. That all to me makes it look very different to BB.

I wouldn't go that far, especially based on the grainy LQ footage.

The reports from those who saw it at SDCC said the actually footage at a somber, autumn-esque tone to it.

The 'dark and gritty' descriptors aren't exactly off. This isn't a bright comicbook movie like the Marvel Studios films.

This is a very grounded film in the real world, which just happens to introduce a character with unrealistic abilities.

Im not basing that just on the footage (which I saw just fine, most of it, btw) but on everything I have managed to learn about the film in the last few months. MOS didn't evoke the dark and gritty feeling in me. It is serious and grounded yes, but If you think this will essentially be a Christopher Nolan Batman movie switched with Superman, I think you are deeply mistaken.

As for Marvel, their problem (though looking at their succees, they have no problem, lol) has nothing to do with them making ´´bright`` comic book movies. It has to do with pushing directors around and not aiming high enough in terms of the scale of the movies (TIH, CA:TFA and Thor weren't really ´´epic`` films on a large scale).

I think that's basically what they're going for. A more dark, intimidating, badass Superman. It's what general audiences want to see in order to take the character seriously today.

The stuff with Superman VS the military from the trailer really reminded me of Nolan's Batman. I'm glad they're playing up him as a threat.

That shot with the skulls.. yeah, this isn't your granddaddy's Superman.

This reminds me of an interview I was watching with Michael Uslan (I can dig it up on youtube if you want) one of the producers of all Nolan's Batman movies. He was basically talking about how Hollywood now seems to think that you take the tone and style from TDK and apply it to other superhero movies but that you can't do that because that tone is specific to Batman and you have to respect the nature of the character you are bringing to the screen and not try to simply switch that character with Batman and his world. And then he said that this is what they are now doing with the Superman reboot. That there are people devoted to it who understand the character of Superman and are not just turning him into a Dark Knight copy.

A badass Superman is fine and good, but only when he is engaging evil that threatens the lives of innocents. Snyder seems to understand what Superman is all about, no doubt does Goyer and Nolan is intelligent enough to know the difference between the characters.

Again, I think, no, I know, you are mistaken. A badass Superman in a serious and grounded film does not = Batman.

Only that stuff was already in the Superman comics before MOS. Nolan did not invent this.

Could be a dream sequence and is irrelevant to this discussion.

I never said it equaled Batman, but that MoS is keeping the same tone and approach as Nolan's Batman films... applying that to Superman.

That's where the 'dark and gritty' descriptors apply.

It will be a drastic change from the one dimensional boyscout Superman Reeve played and that audiences are familiar with.

It's much closer to Nolan's Batman, but still recognizable as Superman. It's just a much needed reinvention and update of the character.

If you go back and watch all 4 Reeves movies you cant help but notice that 1&2 which were essentially filmed as one large movie by Donner and then cut into two for release and then 3&4 were tremendously different in tone. They almost follow the original Batman movie formula where each subsequent movie is more campy and comedic than the last. And most people would say that 3&4 were inferior to 1&2 based on the tone alone. Which says to me that Superman requires a serious tone. Maybe not Dark, but Serious. And it definitely should not be camp or comedy.
Thats why the Serious tone they appear to be taking with MOS looks like the right direction to me...
