Default Guardians of the Galaxy: Countdown Thread

A Guardians of the Galaxy movie is happening

It will have Star-Lord in it

It will have Drax in it

It will have Gamora in it

It will have Groot in it

It will have Thanos in it

But most importantly it will have Rocket Raccoon in it

The clock stands at 746 days

In 746 days you'll be watching a Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Let that sink in

There aren't 746 issues of GotG so I can't start a cover countdown yet. If anyone has a suggestion of something else to countdown alongside the days let me know. I might just post a nifty pic of an obscure Marvel cosmic character every day until we get to cover countdown territory

You could use Marvel.wikia.com and use their "Known appearances" sections and do a countdown that way...might get complicated though.

Is it the same Thanos from the MCU(hinted in the beginning of Avengers and shown during a credit scene at the end of the movie)or is it a complete stand-alone Thanos in a stand-alone film??

Of course it's the same. Why would it be a standalone Thanos in a standalone film? That doesn't make much sense...

Don't know I just thought maybe Feige didn't want this film in the MCU,IF it is though then where would it stand in the time-line?

I think it's safe to say they're not going to have two alternate universe Thanos's. Why in the world would they confuse the audience like that? "Oh, the Guardians of the Galaxy Thanos? Yeah, he's a parallel universe version of the Avengers Thanos. They're not the same guy." The entire point of the MCU is for all their movies to coexist in the same universe. They're not about to create an Earth-1/Earth-2 situation like DC. As for the timeline, it'd happen after Avengers and before Avengers 2.

No Warlock, Nova, Mar-Vell or Quasar, what's the deal? if you're going to do a Cosmic movie go all out. Why go to bat with characters that most fanboys aren't even all that familiar with?

Just because certain characters have been confirmed doesn't automatically mean that all other characters won't be in it. There's a good chance we'll see 2 of those characters.

I theorized in another thread that they didn't put Warlock etc in because they didn't want to have 2-3 characters fighting for the role of main protagonist. It worked okay in Avengers since we'd already been introduced to all of those characters in solo films; we don't have that luxury this time.

As far as awareness, all of these characters are so obscure to the general audience, that I don't think it really makes a difference. Warlock and Nova are as much less famous than Iron Man as Iron Man was less famous than Spider-Man prior to his movie; at that point, what does it matter? Use the team you believe you can tell the best story with.

Adam Warlock is essential to so many stories they're tied with, though. The Soul Gem, the Magus, the Universal Church of Truth, the Fault, the Infinity Gauntlet, Gamora, Pip, Avatar of Life, etc. Anything involving Thanos should definitely involve Adam Warlock as well. I can see why they wouldn't include Nova, as he's better in his own series and doesn't really belong in Guardians of the Galaxy, but Warlock should definitely be in. Think of it like Star Wars, pairing the Jedi with the Smuggler. Warlock could be the Luke Skywalker to Star-Lord's Han Solo.

I don't know if you've read every Annihilation tie-in, but they could have part of the movie where the team is looking for the cosmic messiah (a'la when Phyla and Moondragon were in Annihilation Conquest), and find Warlock's cocoon.

Yep, I've read it. In which case he'd be in the movie, so I'm not sure why you mention it, since you seemed to be arguing for him to not be in the movie.

It would stand in "modern times" in the MCU timeline.
A lot of people (including bloggers and mainstream media sites reporting on the GOTG) are confusing the GOTG with the older "classic" GOTG, who were from the 31st century. *THIS* version of the GOTG, born in the ashes of Annihilation in 2008, is very much "real time," and current.

What I'm wondering is how they're going to handle Star-Lord. Peter Quill is a human, and an Earthling, from our world, and the way he's "chosen" to become Star-Lord and how he organizes the new GOTG is very Green Lantern-esque (to the point of rip-off). I'm not sure Marvel Studios is going to take that route with his story.

Use the covers of the issues in which each character appeared. Here, let me get the ball rolling. As far as I can tell, Groot is surprisingly the oldest character of the bunch, first appearing in 1960 and created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Here it is, the beginning of what would become the modern era of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I like the idea from the Annihilation saga and Annihilation Conquest of a hero who was kind of GL-esque, who had a fall from grace, and this is his second chance.

Ok, according to the Marvel Database, each of the following characters has the following number of appearances.

230 Adam Warlock
208 Drax the Destroyer
167 Gamora
053 Groot
065 Rocket Raccoon
069 Star-Lord
229 Thanos

So that's 1,021 appearances total. While a lot of those issues feature more than one character at once (Thanos and Drax the Destroyer first appeared together, after all), there's probably still plenty of separate covers left over to cover the next two years. So the only question is if they'll be done in order or at random. Personally I vote in order. At the very least their first appearances are so infrequent that we can go a couple days without a definite list compiled. After all, the next guy to appear on that list after Groot was Adam Warlock seven years later. Did Groot make any more appearances between 1960 and 1967? If not, then the cover for Monday should be Adam Warlock's first appearance.
