Default Problem caused by virus looking for help

Ok the issue is for my little sister's laptop. A few days ago she got a generic trojan dropper on her laptop. We where able to get rid of it hopefully(via restoring to an earlier date).

But it did damage some programs ie windows firewall and microsoft essentials getting turned off and not going back on. So I was wondering if anyone knows what we can do get those systems back up.

I would prefer not having to do a total restore and having to put programs back and all and lose other things. Any help would be great.

See that's the problem with Viruses. If an anti-virus program doesn't take care of it, I'm afraid there's not much you can do, other than to wipe it and re-install programs. However, I will say this. The Microsoft Security Essentials is OK, but nowhere near as good as something like Norton or McAfee. MSE is a free program and since it's free it doesn't have as big of a virus dictionary than the programs that aren't free. I mean it works great if you happen to get a virus that's in it's virus definition library. Other than that you are screwed, I'm afraid. Now if you still have access to the OS, do you have a way to back-up pictures, music, movies, executable files, etc., like a DVD burner or a large capacity Flash Drive? If I were you, I would back-up what I could and then do a complete restore and be done with it. Because the time that you are going to spend fighting this thing is not worth it, because there is no telling how buried the virus is, in the Registry.

ya we decided wipe the laptop clean and do a total restore. After i took a boatload of time transfering a bunch of movie films over to another computer.
