So I just saw an ad for a new SyFy show premiering Aug 14th called "Collection Intervention"
Its portraying people with large comics/action figure/sci-fi/etc collections as people with mental problems. Just more bad portrayals of our kind on television

As a collector myself,I do feel there is a dangerous tightrope we do balance.I've seen people buy stuff instead of paying bills because "they have to have it."You have to be careful not to let a hobby become an obsession.

I am really, really sick of reality television, paticularly the brand centered on collecting/pawning/hoarding, etc.
Even though it is a different network, my friend said it best: remember when the History Channel used to show documentaries? |

I like all the crazy people who just throw their trash on the floor and have gooey dead cats smooshed under the couches. That's always fun. But now they'll have Catwomen dolls and Millenium Falcons and such. Can't wait.

Well, you teed it right up for me. I had to take the shot. ;-)
I hope some these people have cool collections to look at, and not just piles of trash. Even some of the Hoarders think they "collect" things, when they are all falling apart and covered in dust and roaches crawling all over it. When that happens, they're not collector items anymore, its garbage. Those poor souls. THAT, I don't wanna see. I wanna see cool displays and good stuff. I hope its cool. Is it just a one time show or a series?

Looks like this aired on Tuesday night, did anybody check it out? If so, how was it? Did these folks have some amazing collections to get jealous over?

I managed to watch it ondemand last night, it was pretty good. The featured two different people: a woman obsessed with Star Wars and a guy obsessed with Catwoman. It didn't make collectors look bad or anything, at least in my opinion. These collectors just had more stuff than they had room for. Definitely worth checking out if you get a chance.

I caught it, the Star Wars chick just collected ANYTHING with Star Wars on it. Even useless **** like kid's birthday decorations, there was no theme to her collection.
The Catwoman guy was just wasting his money by keeping his stuff in moving boxes in the garage. He even had alot of multiples he didnt even know about.

why would it be an issue ?
its actually a healthy release from the daily stresses of life only when it interferes with real-world issues (not going to work, neglecting child/spouse, financial responsibilites, etc...) then its a problem basically, if its done in moderation, it should be ok |

On the travel channel there's another show called Toy Hunters which is basically one guy traveling from town to town going to stores or private collectors looking for a few cool vintage toys to later sell at an auction.
The guy seems to know his stuff from toys of any decade and in one show he did come upon a Darkseid vehicle from the Super Powers line but he kept pronouncing Darkseid as Darkseed.

I watched Toy Hunters the other day. I was hoping for it to be a little bit like AMC's Comic-Book Men. I could barely get through the episode.
The host of that show is so annoying.

I've seen both eppys and I certainly like the show.
Star Wars woman- All the figures made me drool. She was really attached to her collection. I liked her stuff the most so far. It was pretty sad to see her struggle with giving up some of her collectibles. Catwoman guy- looked more like hoarding than collecting. He had plenty of nice things, but they were boxed up and often not in good condition. His situation seemed to be dire due to the money it consumed, so it was nice to see him part with some things for the money. (If, that is, the show isn't a set-up/embellished, as reality TV often is) GI Joe/Car guy- had a nice collection, but far too much. He had piles and piles of things in every room. He just needed to streamline and he did. Barbie woman- I really liked how the show and her family went about getting her to sell small pieces to get a first piece Barbie. I can't believe her kids put up with storing her collectibles in their closets. It seemed to work out well in the end.
