So this will be tied in to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Does that mean it is possible characters from the TV show will appear in future Avengers movies and vis versa? That would be cool, even if they are just really minor side characters.

Considering how he tugged at the group's heartstrings with the bloody trading cards, I wouldn't be surprised if Coulson survived and was in recovery, and Fury just let the group think he croaked.

His soul was trapped in Loki's spear and he comes back as a ghost.

Don't bring him back from the dead. Have his role be in flashbacks or something like that.

Although I'm not a fan of Whedon finding some contrived way to bring Coulson back which makes his seeming sacrifice in the Avengers worthless, it would admittedly be great if he is the star of the SHIELD show. It needs someone like him to add weight to it. I just hope Sitwell is in it too as a regular. I would like to see more scenes of them together like in those Marvel shorts such as the one of them eating together.
Maybe Cobie Smulders can be in it too when HIMYM finishes. Having both Gregg and Smulders will add an air of gravitas to the series so that it really does feel connected to the films. If Gregg becomes a fully fledged character, he will be the equivalent of Star Trek's Lt Miles O'Brien, who just started off with a small cameo role in ST:TNG before becoming a more regular character in that show, and then finally graduating to ST: DS9 as a main character.

I really hope that he isn't just in a flashback scene or one episode that's set "1 year earlier".
Personally I think the right move is to say that Fury lied about him dying, it's a simple way out and would explain why Coulson was assigned to a less visible role within Shield (I´m assuming they won't be based out of a very CGI expensive helicarrier). It wouldn't diminish his sacrifice since he still got stabbed by Loki and was willing to risk everything, he would just have gotten lucky and survived. Plus it does open up possibilities later on at having him meet up with the Avengers which could be interesting. They could also write things so that they never find out he's still alive, heck, it could be a running joke in the movies that Coulson is always just behind the scenes saving the day or getting the vital intel

I say leave his appearance here as a flashback. Or set it so that the pilot occurs pre/during Avengers. And keep Coulson's eventual return for the stinger of Iron Man 3. If you thought the Avengers reveal at the end of Iron Man was huge and fantastic, that would be about ten times more so.

I don't know if I'd classify Coulson's death as a sacrifice...

Maybe not. But it was a pretty emotionally important part of the film.
Like, I think I'll only be okay with Coulson only having been dead for pretendsies if they put a major focus on how much of an ******* that makes Nick Fury. Not as a value judgement, I think that's really in character and, from a story standpoint, a cool turn, but just to salvage it's emotional relevance. I mean, I guess I do expect something like that. Joss Whedon brought exactly three characters back from the dead in his shows, and each time he made the aftermath almost worse than the dying had been just so it felt earned.

That makes sense. I got my timeline all mixed up. Iron Man 3 will likely premiere before the first SHIELD episode. Hence, Coulson's return will likely be revealed in Iron Man 3's stinger before subsequently featuring on SHIELD, the series a few months down the line. |

Coulson's death wasn't a sacrifice. It was an accident that Fury used to his advantage, so reviving him doesn't take anything away from the film.

Exactly. I never thought for a moment that Coulson is actually dead. Fury's far too sneaky and Coulson is far too popular. There's nothing retroactive about bringing Coulson back if it was planned from the beginning.

Well Amy Acker doesn't need to play any of the SHIELD agents of that ensemble cast. Doesn't mean she can't star as a super powered female. She ought to be a superheroine, not just an agent, scientist or love interest.

More importantly, she deserves a gig where she isn't playing the cute clumsy girl.
