I wouldn't call them buffonish, Abby is quirky and wears her heart on her sleeve, but it's never implied that she is anything but whip smart at her job, same with Tony, his immaturity is like a shield. In the case of Hawaii Five-0 Steve and Danno have the same sorts of ticks, like the carguments gimmick where their rules vs blowing things up differences are a source of the bulk of the jokes. It's less so with Chin and Kono but that's because they aren't as developed at this point as the NCIS team.

The only real difference between a buffoon and someone quirky is how effective they are.

When you make the main character too awesome, the rest of the team becomes increasingly useless by necessity. There's only so much to do in a 44 minute show. If Gibbs/Coulson can do the vast majority of it, the rest of the cast is going to look buffoonish instead of quirky.

That said, this isn't a problem that Joss Whedon and Co have.

I don't really think that's the case with NCIS either. Every character on the show is shown to be extremely competent at their jobs. In fact, one of the criticisms I sometimes hear being levelled at NCIS is how such an experienced and competent team is still together instead of each member being promoted onto their own team.

Well it's like Star Trek. The original Enterprise crew were still together long after they should have been promoted. Spock was already the rank of Captain by TWOK. Chekov was Commander (or maybe Lt Commander) in that same film on the Reliant (but ended up back on the Enterprise). It was only by ST6 that Sulu commanded his own vessel.

Dinozo has been put in charge of the team before when Gibbs was captured, but it seems that they prefer to work within their status quo rather than changing things up. I can understand that.

I don't question any of the team's competency or their ability to get results. They just act like clowns along the way and almost behave like they're bumbling even though they get the job done (eg McGee, Palmer, often Dinozo too).

It's too damn bad they aren't using any of the SHIELD agents from the comics. Even the movies only used Fury, Sitwell and Hill (I consider Natasha and Clint to be purely superheroes despite the Ultimate-style retconning).

In a new interview with MTV, Jackson was asked about whether he might appear on S.H.I.E.L.D., but says he hasn’t spoken to Joss Whedon –- who is co-writing and directing the pilot -- about it. However, Jackson adds, “In my mind, I would tend to think that he would, if nothing else, be like Charlie in Charlie's Angels. At least be the voice!" I hope that means he's interested in being a part of it.

"We have a "little" pilot for television that you might have heard about called Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. co-written, directed, and Executive Produced by none other than Joss Whedon! Working with Joss, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell on the show is a blast! And bringing in Clark Gregg to play Agent Phil Coulson — the best! Hopefully we will be on in the Fall of 2013 on ABC!"
