Probably because it's one of, if not the most popular tv show at the moment and has been on air for the last ten years. So clearly, they're doing something right.

Not necessarily. Things tend to get really good ratings and stay on TV forever because they're inoffensive and easy to follow, not because they're good.

Thing is... how does one define 'good'? What makes something 'good' or 'bad'? How does making a show accessible and it not containing offensive content make the show bad? Or is NCIS 'bad' simply because it isn't to your personal taste?

You're right, good and bad are somewhat vague and fluidic concepts in the context of quality of literature. I never said that wasn't the case.

Stepping away from comparisons to current TV procedurals for a second...
Whedon's mentioned a few times that the TV show will be 'stand alone' in a sense, and that we shouldn't expect too many cameos from folks from the MCU movies. Obviously, this makes sense as the cost of having the likes of Downey, Samuel L Jackson, etc. as series regulars would be prohibitive. At the same time, I'm a little concerned as to exactly HOW autonomous the SHIELD show would be. Does it mean that the events in the MCU would not in any way be related to the SHIELD show? Would they go as far as to not place it in the shared MCU? I don't believe this will be the case, but I would absolutely hate it if they went this route. Takes? (Sorry in advance if this has been discussed previously. I haven't gone through all 32 pages yet... just around 30. )

The show will be in continuity with the MCU, I don't think there is any question to that. What I think the show will deal with is more of the street-level action that takes place in the MCU and leave the larger scale world events for the films. I think we will get recurring spots for some street level heroes and villians and SLJ is even saying that he wants to be involved.

@OB12 and @LuisTX85: Agreed. I believe the 'meat and taters' of the show will involving dealing with the street-level heroes/baddies.
Wonder if it could serve as a test-bed for the likes of Daredevil, Heroes for Hire et al. Not immediately, of course, but once the show finds its groove, the possibilities are endless. |

NCIS and it's ilk are devoid of any creativity or merit. Major network procedurals(and lets face it, most procedurals in general) are absolutely terrible and are universally regarded as the place where actors go to die, but not before collecting a bunch of paychecks. I don't see how this is even up for debate. Ratings mean nothing; the so called numbers for ratings haven't been anything close to accurate in 2 decades, and especially so since the advent of DVRs and VOD services. Even if you do take into account ratings, all they do is show that .01% of the viewing public prefers to watch mindless reality garbage, where things like writing and acting literally do not exist.

Fanboys, if I read the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV pilot, is that something you would be interested in?

I think we all know that if HIMYM ends this season (as it rightfully should from a storytelling standpoint) Cobie would be headed to ABC...

Perhaps, but the statement still wasn't relevant in the least.

SO Joss Whedon Is doing a COmic Book based series with noone from actual comics.
And Coulson doesn't count.Me think He Is letting the success of the Avengers go to his head. |

We're very early in the game here. Hell, we don't even know that this is really the full cast, or whether the identities given out are the real deal or not.
And besides, even if he isn't using any of the comics characters, I don't see how that means he's letting success get to his head.

Is that a problem? I mean, really, besides Nick Fury, Dum Dum Dougan, and maybe Sharon Carter, most of Marvel's SHIELD agent characters have pretty flat personalities, so he'd be building them basically from the ground up anyway. With wholly original characters, they're doing the same amount of work with more creative freedom.
Plus, odds are that the villains are going to be established Marvel characters, and they're going to be the real draw as far as hardcore Marvel fans are concerned. In a show like this, what you hear most from the fans is them asking when villain X is going to be on the show. I'm hoping for an Arcade episode myself. I'm not a huge fan of Arcade, but I feel like the Whedons could do him really well.

Sounded relevant... in my head atleast.
![]() Lemme explain. Basically, if HIMYM ended after this season, it would free up Smulders to join the cast as a regular. Hence, Chloe Bennet wouldn't be the 'last' cast regular. |

Finding the right time slot for this show is going to be crucial.

No, I'm saying they wanted to create their own characters instead because in the end it would have been just as much work but more restrictive.
