and since when is utilizing the field of view to showcase set pieces "illogical storytelling?" There's more to film than just actors talking to each other, there's mise-en-scene, there's sets, lighting ect. Just because the guy is good at his job doesn't make him the final authority on it.

It's so weird that The Avengers is the blockbuster that keeps coming up as the subject of "what's wrong with ___" essays or remarks lately.

When you're the highest grossing movie of the year, that tends to happen. It happened with The Dark Knight a in the coming months after that was released.

I'm wondering what shots he's talking about with this quote.

My guess could be the the low angle dutch shots in the beginning and during Loki's scene in Germany.

Either way, it is pretty messed up and unprofessional to bash movies and people's work in public.

Nothing really wrong with showing off the scenery anyway.

Not at all. That's why they spend half a million on dollars -because they're going to have it on camera. No sense making a crappy set and showing that off. I mean, I don't know as much about making movies Pfister but I imagine they write the script first then make the sets afterwards.

Dark Knight Rises and Avengers get lumped together because they're both popular and both superhero movies, but the similarities end there. Comparing them is like comparing Catch Me if You Can to Con Air -they both did well at the box office and they both have planes but they're completely different movies.

I agree with him that some of the cinematography in The Avengers was pure trash at times but it also had some great looking moments such as the long tracking shot of the whole team fighting.

But it is the poorest shot film out of the Phase 1 films (Thor comes in behind really close though cause of it's stupid Dutch shots and the Asgardians vs Frost Giants fight in Norway).

His point isn't that you shouldn't do weirdly-angled shots, his point is that your shot selection should be based on what's the best way to deliver the story visually. In Inception, it was called for to have wild and crazy shot angles to support the wild and crazy aspects of the story itself.

In Avengers...not so much.

Hes great at what he does but Ive never ben a fan of the way he shoots hand to hand combat in the Bat films, and most the time its cause of the angles. The scenes have impact yet feel like hes trying to cheat bad fight choreography. Maybe thats intentional or more Nolans shots of choice, but I really think the hand to hand stuff could have been filmed better. He nailed the Inception fight and has some great vehicle action shots, otherwise I havnt been too impressed. I def Enjoyed a majority of the action scenes in Avengers more then the Bat films. Both have some problems. DKR def has better cinematography overall, no doubting that.

But it's about more than just being able to see the action. It's about composition and shot selection and lighting, and the visual element of storytelling.

I'll be perfectly honest, I'm not the biggest fan of Pfister either - particularly his cinematographer prior to TDK - but it's hardly because of some quick cut action scenes.

Definitely. All that comes into play. I like his cinematography alot. For the combat I just dont think the angles were always the best choice for the action going on, but that can just be my preference. I prefer when Nolan uses the wides in the action. I really cant stand the BB Ras fight and theres a few shots during Bane and Bats in DKR that just felt it was hiding to much in over the shoulders. Love the hell out of the franchise, the way the fights are filmed were usually my only problem.

For me, prior to TDK, his cinematography was VERY focused on the actors, and their performances. So much so, that I felt that pretty much all other scenery or background happenings were lost in his films. It's a problem I had with Insomnia, Batman Begins, and The Prestige all the same.

With TDK however, him and Nolan finally seemed to grasp that - at times - the scenery is just as - if not more - important than what's going on with the various characters in the film. And I think that has greatly improved the visual quality of Nolan's films.

They still have a ways to go though. I agree the fight cinematography is terrible, and I still feel as though they could improve their overall shot selection. But I will say, in terms of lighting, color palette, filters, etc., Pfister's pretty phenomenal.

Agreed. No complaints there. The scope of the scenery and locations have evolved nicely through the series.

Why is it unprofessional for him to voice his opinion? Everyone and their mother voiced their opinions about these two movies. Pfister can't just because he works in the industry? It seems to offend the fans of the movies more than anyone else.

Also, Joss Whedon bashed Zak Penn's script for The Avengers but no one said that was unprofessional. People really don't care about professionals voicing their opinions as long as they agree with it. If he badmouthed Transformer's cinematography no one would bat an eye.
