Either that, illness, or heredity. The last few times I've seen him on TV, he looked happy and healthy. I just hope and pray that an autopsy doesn't find drugs in his system.

Regardless, he was a tremedous actor. I was just watching "Surviving Christmas", a bad movie in which JG was a welcomed bright spot.

Stunned and very sad to hear this news. The Sopranos is a magnificent program, one of my favourites. I watched an episode just the other day. James Gandolfini was just outstanding as Tony Soprano. One of the best characters of all time in my book. His smile, voice, nasty streak, etc. Brilliant.

A real loss. RIP, James.

Nice touch from the restaurant Holsten's, where the final scene in The Sopranos was filmed.

I never watched The Sopranos (wish I had), but the news of Gandolfini's death is stunning to me. RIP.

RIP James Gandolfini.

It's a shame he passed away. I loved his work in True Romance , The Last Castle , Where The Wild Things Are , and The Sopranos. He was a great actor and I enjoyed his sense of humor.

It's an outstanding drama series with a unique sense of humor. The main character is a sociopath , but Gandolfini brings a lot of depth to the role. I would recommend it. Especially if you liked Goodfellas.

Still can't believe it about Gandolfini. Serious gut-punch, as others have said.

Sad day

I've never watched that show either, but if you just watch The Mexican and 8mm back-to-back, you can see the amazing range that Gandolfini had.

I feel like starting with Heath Ledger in 2008, we've suddenly lost a lot of celebrities prematurely the last five years. I mean, just off the top of my head, we lost Heath, Brittany Murphy, Bernie Mac, Patrick Swayze, Patrice O'Neal, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, Andy Whitfield, Whitney Houston, Michael Clarke Duncan, Pete Postlethwaite and now Gandolfini (and I'm sure I'm forgetting many more).... all of them much earlier than we should have (I believe none of them were even 60). I know these things happen, but it seems like it's happened a LOT more since 2008, than it did the five years previous to that.

I believe I read somewhere recently that the Sopranos was #1 on the list of the most well-written shows EVER on tv...

very high praise and well-deserved indeed...

I think it has to do with the explosion of entertainment. There is so much more variety thanks to new mediums. Movies use to be #1 at the box office for months at a time, now you are lucky to have 2 weeks at top before the next "big" movie comes out.

TV went from really 3 channels. Now you can have a successful TV series not on CBS, NBC or ABC.

And let's not forget the internet.

I just think there's just a bigger entertainment medium which means just more celebrities out there.

I agree. Being a celebrity is more accessible now than it was 25 years ago. It just seems like more deaths are occurring because we have a wider awareness of more celebrities.
