Would be nice if this is one of those films that can be saved with DVD/BR sales.

Hmm, well, I suppose maybe if Dredd would have had "a name" like, say, Uma Thurman as Mama it might have caught the the mainstream's attention a little more, just like John Travolta's name probably helped The Punisher to, at least, not be a total financial flop. Maybe.

This movie missed the mark, there wasn't a bit of satire to it.

Really good Judge Dredd movie. Urban was a great Dredd. Could have used a better villain imo though, but still a very good film.
I would have loved to see Anderson (I thought Thirlby was really good in it too) facing Judge Death, in a next film with the same team Who knows? Hopefully it still happens in the future. _ "ANDERSSSON!"

Loved this movie. Damn shame it bombed at the boxoffice, hopefully it finds life in video sales.

Even the international BO was terrible, people just don't seem to care about Dredd. Maybe the character is not relatable enough for the masses, but the movie deserved better for its effort.

I think maybe one of the reasons Dredd has been performing the way it has, it's because it's a risky, first-of-its-kind movie. What other properties do you know that in its first big screen adaptation ever had a massive financial and critical disaster, and years later be rebooted(at least successfully)?
.....and the The Punisher(1989), Captain America(1990), and Fantastic Four(1993) don't count, as they unnoticeably went direct to video. Last edited by rogue trooper; 10-29-2012 at 12:54 PM. |

This movie is fantastic. I think I enjoyed it more than the Avengers actually only cause I had a big stupid grin on my face during lots of this. It wasn't trying to be anything other than pure fun entertainment. I can only imagine what a sequel would be if we got to explore the mega city more. Is there any hope?
I don't think studios are blind to quality movies they've produced whether they've made money or not. I believe there was a quote a couple years back where the head of Universal said that despite disappointing numbers he would rather make 10 more Scott Pilgrims than more of the other garbage they produced that year. |

I'd just like to use my first post to thank you all (even the ones I disagree with), for such a mature and informed discussion. It really has been a joy reading everyone's thoughts about 'Dredd' and its future. Special thanks to 'skoponok' and his interesting info on how films are funded. Maybe things aren't as bad as they seem?
Just to pick up on the point about the lack of satire in the film; I guess the scene where Dredd beats the **** out of Kay in front of the American flag doesn't count? Current WW is $36m+ Last edited by JD UK; 10-30-2012 at 06:22 PM. |

I would hope, but at this point I'm thinking the tv series idea the writer suggested might be a good plan b if it doesn't. I'd have preferred a trilogy, but I wouldn't hold my breath at this point.

C'mon Disney - we all know how deep those pockets are. Dont stop with Marvel and Lucasfilm, purchase the rights to 2000AD films. Pretty please?

If you're a distributor. They need a couple of big boys to see the potential and take a risk.

It likely should be able to. This month it opens in Finland, Taiwan, Germany, and Switzerland. I have a feeling Germany's numbers should be somewhat substantial.

Speaking of which
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPIbxq0ljzc And there (as far as I can tell with my schoolboy level German), we have all the usual gripes about 3D, Stallone and 'The Raid' and those having to fight the brave fight against the trolls. Isn't it about time this s**t was getting old? Japan should be a big one in the new year. |

That doesn't negate anything I said in response to Spider-neil's reasons for Judge Dredd failing.

I thought it was February. Or not at all. It doesn't seem to be officially confirmed anywhere.
If the Japanese end up falling in love with it though, they'll be my new favourite people. |
