Default Kevin Smith will "Hit Somebody"

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=518446

Quote:
Smith revealed exclusively to NHL.com that Seann William Scott, who worked with Smith on "Cop Out," will play Buddy, the title character in "Hit Somebody." The script, based on a Warren Zevon song with lyrics by acclaimed writer Mitch Albom, is a story of a hockey enforcer who strives to score just one goal in a hockey game.

"Seann, for me, was the key into the character," Smith told NHL.com. "I had all the elements in place, and the one thing I was missing was the personality. Generally I like to write to a voice, but I didn't know who that voice was or what that voice could be. And then after spending all the time with Seann on this movie, he's pitch perfect. He is that guy.

"This dude has something in him that you can just see hangs so well on Buddy. He's got some pain that's going to work out well. More importantly he has so much love in his heart. Seann Scott is such an ebullient, happy person who's just happy to be there. And on ("Cop Out") you could see it. On our set the guy is just so delighted to be working, to be making people laugh. But he's always dismissed as Stifler. … This is his chance to shine."

Scott, a native of Cottage Grove, Minn., admittedly isn't much of a skater, but for the role of Buddy, that works just fine.

"I didn't grow up playing hockey which is good because the character is not supposed to be a great player, he's a great fighter," Scott said.

While nothing is locked in contractually, Smith said having Scott's voice in his head makes finishing the script a far easier task.

"This dude has something in him that you can just see hangs so well on Buddy. He's got some pain that's going to work out well. More importantly he has so much love in his heart. Sean Scott is such an ebullient, happy person who's just happy to be there. … This is his chance to shine." -- Kevin Smith

"Once I get going I could probably write it in less than a month, because it's all right here at the top of my throat, ready to go, and in my heart," Smith said. "In my heart of hearts I know it's Seann, it's so easy to go. Just easy to skate all-out when you have a voice in your head and I have his voice well in my head."

That voice doesn't sound like Scott's famed "Stifler" character from the "American Pie" franchise. Scott has done dramatic roles before, and Smith believes Hit Somebody can elevate both their careers.

"I look at this as Seann's opportunity to go to the (Tom) Hanks level," Smith said. "Hanks for years and years did this (lesser) role and then he became that (blockbuster movie) guy. This is Seann's chance to do that as well, not just be Stifler. And it's my chance to not just be the "Clerks" guy. It's my chance to do something big, epic in scale. Stories I tell span one day. … This spans 30 years. You're talking a period. You're trying to bring people to a time in your life that hasn't existed in 30 years. The look of it, the feel of it, the sound of it -- everything I have is going to be in that movie."
I love Kevin Smith and I love Seann William Scott. They both get ragged on a lot, but I think they are way better than they are perceived. This seems really different from what they are used to, I hope it all works out.

I do love me some hockey, not sure about Smith though. I like Chasing Amy a lot but I haven't heard good things about "Cop Out". I have avoided the trailers but will see the movie.

The one thing I can tell is that he is passionate about the subject in "Hit Somebody".

The problem with Cop Out is that the setup for everything is just flimsy and random. Too many coincidences, and too much silliness, even though it's meant to be a comedy.

But it IS funny, to me anyway. There are some solid jokes, and I actually thought Wills and Morgan worked well together. And Sean William Scott in particular was fabulous. He's a great comedic actor beyond Stifler and his Stifler-type roles.

Not familiar with him. Why did Scott leave? I thought he was looking forward to this project.

He picked another hockey movies to star in. So Smith got Braun, one of his Red State cast members. He played the kid that could glow in the dark in Sky High.

Quote:
Tonight’s the night of the Red State premiere at Sundance, and following the screening, Kevin Smith will be holding a live, public auction in the auditorium, for the rights to distribute the film. I wish him the best of luck with this because, though I don’t expect it will, there’s a real risk that everything could go wrong. The audience could, possibly, not take to the film at all and the distributors might either fail to turn up in the first place or simply reject this “razzle-dazzle” way of doing business. As you might expect, excitement is running high with Smith, and his Twitter feed is bubbling away nicely. Surprsingly, though, he’s not just stoking excitement for Red State, but also for his next picture, the Warren Zevon-inspired Ice Hockey movie, Hit Somebody.
We already know some of the casting for the film – Kyle Gallner is to pop up, late on, as a Wayne Gretzky-like character, and Nicholas Braun is to play the protagonist, aspiring Hockey player Buddy McCracken. They’re both Red State alums, and it now seems like this will be true of an awful a lot of the cast. Smith tweeted the following statement and image:
For those who can’t be at the Red State debut tonight, I offer just a taste of the final reel:

Almost this entire cast will return in Hit Somebody. Coming across the boards in 2012

In a rather non-specific way, Smith has just revealed the casting of, I’d imagine, the vast majority of roles in the film. But how about a little specificity? Well, he topped up his answer via Tweet and addressed the involvement of some of individual actors:
  • Michael Parks will be playing”the French Canadian coach of Buddy’s first pro team”
  • If John Goodman will, as he puts it, have him again, he’ll “be playing Blue Jay Jennings – Buddy’s first coach”
  • Melissa Leo will have a role if “she’s not too tired from double-fisting awards all year, GOD YES!”
Sounds like Parks has signed up and the others have not – though that’s not at all confirmed, of course.
Smith has said that production should take place in the autumn after Dave Klein, his preferred DoP, has finished production on the current season of True Blood.
Expect a lot more noise from the Red State publicity circus in the next 24 hours or so…

I'm hoping this is more of a character drama with comedic elements. Lets hope this is the beginning of a new chapter in smiths career, with this and red state. Now that he's started smoking pot, maybe he'll feel creative enough to get to that sci fi he's been talking about, "ranger danger and the danger rangers."

Would it be possible to get a title change since Scott is no longer in this?

Oh, I know who you are talking about now.

Sucks that Scott left, I was really looking forward to him being the lead in this movie. I hope this didn't mess up any working relationship those two had, I'd like to see him in future Smith projects, and not just cameo stuff like in past movies.

Thanks, HighfivingMF!

I can't recall which, but in I think one of the Podcasts Smith mentioned that Scott doing his other movie didn't bring up any problems. All Kevin said was "I guess he just REALLY f****** wanted to do a hockey movie." and that they're still cool.

I missed the first couple seasons of Smallville so I've never watched it with the exception of a couple episodes. I feel like I'm way too behind to catch up.

I want this so bad.

Slap Shot is the greatest hockey movie of all time, but Mystery Alaska and Miracle are also amazing and bring two different aspects of film to the sport. Ever since Happy Gilmore, I've wanted a fun hockey film but sadly Adam doesn't make good movies any more and then luckily the great Kevin Smith, who also loves hockey, is now coming out with this...

I'm sorry if this comes out sounding stupid, but why would Kevin Smith call the movie "Hit Somebody"? Sounds more appropriate for a martial arts film than a hockey comedy.

Unless Will Ferrel was in it, which he's not.

It's not a comedy, it's about the enforcer on the team (the big guy who hits people), and it's based on a song called "Hit Somebody"

No, seriously, that has to be the dumbest explanation to an equally dumb title I've EVER heard. And I'm not saying you're to blame; that'd be Kevin Smith. He said it was a comedy (at least, that's what he implied when he hired Sean William Scott to star before he jumped ship) and now it's apparently based off both some true story (another one of THOSE kinds of films, oy) AND some obscure song? I thought Smith was past this **** after "Cop Out" tanked (from what I heard about "Red State", that seemed to be the case). I was wrong. Way to try and end your directorial career on a bad note, Kev.

EDIT: Ok, just checked the first post. It's NOT a comedy at all apparently. You were right. Oh well. At least there won't be any Star Wars references in this, then...I hope.

It's not based on a true story though. It's 100% an adaptation of the Warren Zevon song. You have every right to think it's dumb, but I just thought I'd clear that up.

Thanks for the clarification. But again, Kevin Smith is being pretentious about this, then. Btw, just listened to that song. It's kinda bland. With that, I have this final speech to give to Kevin Smith as a final "farewell". But since I can't do a live vid on a forum, I'll let Linkara do it for me (end of the first video, beginning of the second one):

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

VIDEO-CLick to Watch!:

Note: Just replace "Joe Quesada" and all the Spider-Man bits with "Kevin Smith" and stuff about his carreer and it's the same thing I'd say to him. *gets ready to dodge oncoming attacks from "Clerks" fans*
