I don't get how people expect the events of X3 being erased when the whole Phoenix storyline is a direct continuation of X2 and the cure storyline is unlikely to have anything to do with the 60s events.

People's hate for X3 is clouding their thinking. Even after having it be confirmed that X3 is indeed canon, people are still trying to come up with ways to do away with that particular movie and leave X1 and X2 put. X1 leads to X2 which leads to X3 which leads to The Wolverine. If anything is going to be erased, or better, established as a separate timeline after the events of DOFP, it'll be all 4 movies because they're all part of one continuing narrative.

Because DoFP is the sequel to First Class, it will likely take place relatively close to the events of that film, meaning that any changes that are made to the future will alter that future from the moment that said changes occur, erasing the events of not only TLS, The Wolverine, and the DoFP future from having ever happened, but also the events of X- Men and X2.

I see what you're saying. You're right. There really isn't a way of changing X3 without retconning the whole franchise, which the studio doesn't want to do. Bit of a bummer.

Yeah, this is what's taking place. First Class, however loose it is, was still in the original timeline. Days of Future Past will change everything, thus creating an alternate timeline, meaning the future X-Men films can be anything they want.

Definitely retcon. Its a staple of comic books.

I worked on a rpg treatment called Xmen: Continuum that was a mish mash of Days of Future Past and Age of Apocalypse. Senator Kelly's death in Xmen 1 was the pivotal event that started everything rolling, the events of Xmen 3 then awakened Apocalypse. During the start of Apocalypse's judgement day style war against humanity, two time travellers, Bishop and Trevor Fitzroy, arrive from the war torn future between the Sentinels and Apocalypse and escape with Wolverine and Kitty Pryde into the 1960s. Unknown to them, the future version of Apocalypse in the body of Cable has anticipated this and also travelled to the 1960s in his Celestial built starship.

Through the course of the events of their intervention with the First Class crew, they manage to get Striker to resign and become an evangelist, Wade Wilson doesn't get turned into Barakapool. He goes AWOL. Blob and Sabretooth join the Brotherhood. Temporarily, the Brotherhood and the Xmen make an alliance to fight Apocalypse.

The climactic battle would have been on the starship on the darkside of the moon, where a Jean Grey clone, the Goblin Queen, is awakened from cryostasis. She ends up aiding the Xmen after discovering that Apocalypse has destroyed the personality of her son, Cable, and possessed his body. All of the time travellers are killed in combat, except Wolverine who dies with the Jean Grey clone, when she unleashes the full might of the Phoenix force to consume the ship and Apocalypse.

The story ended with the Xmen knowing that Apocalypse in some form was waiting in the future and they had to prepare for the coming war.

I messed with the idea of the Sentinel Bastion being part of the story, but couldn't quite fit him in. I doubt the film will be anything like it, but I started work on it long before this film was announced.

The reason no one is talking about it, is because it's pretty much a spin off. It has little relevance on the upcoming movies.

...then whatever X-Men films come after, whether they are in the new past timeline or the new present/future timeline.

Like JJ Abrams has done with "Star Trek", When Spock traveled back in time with Nero who altered the course of history creating a new timeline while keeping the old one still intact.

Well, not really. Whatever happens in Days of Future Past changes the future, thus creating an alternate timeline, one in which (depending on the outcome of the film and the films to follow) could have the world in an utopia.

Again, it all depends on what happens after Days of Future Past.

I don't even think they need to go that far. Days of Future Past could be the massive end game. Then, start fresh or do whatever.

I think Xmen has always had a dystopian future in some form. The original Rachel Summers, Bishop and Cable are from three separate ones. Though there are versions of them in each other's timelines.

Yeah, but what happens to the original timeline that encapsulates X1-X3? As far as I can see, either it stops existing altogether, or it just goes on unchanged while an alternate timeline is created. Either way, it gets a rough deal.
