Agreed. I liked him in Jack Reacher too, but tbh, I'm expecting absolutely nothing from the writing or directing on Die Hard, so if his character at least comes across less annoying than Shia LaBeouf and less monotone than Sam Worthington, then I'll consider it a win, lol.

From a review I just read you were right to expect nothing.

The whole "novelty" of the movie is that it's all about the tense relationship between John and his estranged son Jack, played by Jai Courtney, a worse actor than most professional wrestlers, especially in the heart to heart dialogue scenes where he and Willis stop shooting and jumping off buildings and crashing cars to do a bit of bonding.

If Slade does survive the events of the island and ends up becoming a foe to Oliver in the present day as the new Deathstroke, it'll just make it that much more of a bittersweet ending considering how Slade went on to talk about how his former partner and godfather to his son betrayed him so easily to join the mercenary group.

I've actually noticed that Amell seems to be taller than his body type would suggest. He has short-ish arms and carries himself like a stockier guy, but he's 6'1" and the only regulars on the show who are actually taller than him are Diggle (6'3"), Walter (6'4") and Detective Lance (6'4"). Tommy, Malcolm Merlyn, Yao Fei and the ladies are all shorter, as are most of the guest villains that I'm familiar with (David Anders, Kyle Schmid, Seth Gabel, etc).

That's a shame. I do think he can act. His character in Jack Reacher was such a complete 180º from his earnest good-guy turn in Spartacus, and he was credible in each, so that takes some degree of talent. Oh well, I've read a few AGDtDH reviews so far myself, and none of them were particularly negative toward him other than noting that he and Willis lack chemistry, but The Hollywood Reporter seemed to like him well enough:

So I have a feeling it's just a case of there being nothing to work with. Which, as I said, is pretty much on par with my expectations at this point (sadly, as I love that franchise). I've read no LaBeouf or Worthington comparisons thus far, so I'm not too worried, lol.

Wow he is deceptively tall, I'd pegged him about 5'10 but I had no idea Detective Lance was 6'4. I think where I was thrown off is he doesn't tower over any of the Ladies but that might be because they are wearing heels in his scenes with them, so to then see him noticeably taller than Slade Wilson becomes somewhat jarring, although Bennett has me sold with his powerhouse presence and physicality after this last episode, I'm already trying to imagine how Ollie is going to take on this powder keg of a man.

Yeah, I guess I never realized how much of Bennett's intimidation factor on Spartacus was based on pure screen presence. I mean, his physical shape is a big part of it, but looking back at pictures from the show, I'm noticing how he's shorter than most of the people on it, and I had literally never noticed that while watching the show because he was just so damned imposing, lol.

Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out - we saw Wintergreen/Deathstroke get a blade in the head [through the eye] but we already know that we've seen the mask with an arrow through the same eye earlier on (taking place later). Either Wintergreen's not dead or Wilson and Ollie clash later on - could lead to Ollie being the one to give Wilson his trademark eye-patch?

In truth it's a bit like Tom Cruise as Reacher, his intense presence and confidence overrides his lack of height for the role. Manu just as that power about him, plus he's got that chunky build which helps.

I thought that was actually a pretty cool thriller, and yeah, despite this minor setback I think Courtney will do fine.

Both Ron pearlman and Manu Bennett rock as slade, but he seems like a very difficult character to screw up, unless there's some incarnation I'm unaware of where they sew his mouth shut and have swords coming out of arms.
