Default New Star Wars Show on Disney XD?

Hints of a New Star Wars Show on Disney XD
Written By Paul on October 31st, 2012 at 8:29 am

By now you've heard that Lucasfilm was bought by Disney, and with it, the mouse now has full rights to anything and everything Star Wars. We've already speculated about what may happen with the mothballed Star Wars live-action series that Lucas had reportedly 80 scripts for (short answer: who knows), but Disney has given a hint about a different kind of Star Wars program that could go on the air.

From Disney head Bob Iger:

“We really like Star Wars‘ potential on TV as well and we think Disney XD will be a strong home for that.”, “There will be more feature films as well as consumer products, television projects, games and theme parks attractions.”

That implies another animated show aimed at children. Whether The Clone Wars moves from Cartoon Network to Disney, or this is an entirely new show, I'm not sure. A new show would certainly be welcome, and The Clone Wars should probably stay where it is.

Hopefully we can move out of the prequels finally, and perhaps the new series will be based around the future films that are planning to be released starting in 2015.

Whatever happens, it's a pretty exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. The potential is just limitless right now.

Another article:

What Does Disney Buying Lucasfilm Mean For Television?

Unless you've been hiding inside a tauntaun on Hoth for the last 24 hours, you've probably heard that Disney acquired Lucasfilm and is planning to continue the Star Wars saga on the big-screen. Episodes VII, VIII and IX going into pre-production may be the blockbuster portion of the announcement but the film implications are only one small facet of the new partnership. One question obviously on our minds is... how will the deal affect current, upcoming and potential television series set in the galaxy far far away?

First and foremost, the potential dark side news. Fans of Star Wars: The Clone Wars might have something to worry about since The Cartoon Network has corporate relations with Warner Bros and, more importantly, DC Comics--meaning the Marvel-owning Disney is not likely to let the program continue much longer, at least not on the same channel. Although the sixth season has not officially been announced, IGN reports that "work is underway" so perhaps there are more details that include CN holding onto the rights to make more. The series could even continue on Disney XD. Either would surely be a silver lining for those invested in the animated saga.

The Clone Wars is not the only Star Wars series in production, with Seth Green and Matthew Senreich's SW: Detours also set a long time ago in the aforementioned far away galaxy. An animated sitcom of sorts, the new show is set to make its debut in 2013 but had yet to find (or name) an official home. I assumed that The Cartoon Network/Adult Swim would be the place to catch the upcoming Star Wars comedy but now that's probably not going to happen. I'm sure Disney XD will be able to find a spot on the schedule.

And speaking of room on the XD schedule, the network certainly made enough of it for Marvel-based series after that acquisition, so it's not a stretch to assume that there are also Lucasfilm related projects planned for the family channel. According to the same post by IGN, Disney Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger himself made the comparison with Marvel saying how they “really like Star Wars‘ potential on TV as well and we think Disney XD will be a strong home for that.”

As something like Detours suggests, there are endless possibilities for television series, especially animated ones, to be set in the same universe and let's not forget how well Indiana Jones (another property owned by Lucasfilm, even though the rights currently remain at Paramount) could also do on the children's network. How about the return of Adventures of Young Indiana Jones? Finally there's the obvious potential to expand both properties into prime-time series on ABC. Or any Disney owned channel for that matter.

That's right, the long rumored live-action Star Wars television series no longer seems like a nerd's dream but instead simply a matter of time. I'd say Disney follows the same path with the science fiction franchise (as well as Indy if/when possible) as they did with Marvel - starting with animated superhero series for XD before developing the live-action SHIELD. And why not? I'd watch an Indiana Jones series starring Josh Holloway on ABC, wouldn't you? Just a suggestion. Of course, there's always the chance Disney goes too far and we get something like Star Wars Investigations: Tatooine. What do you think?

MAJOR RED FLAG. We need to stop this NOW. They said the same thing about Ultimate Spider-Man and Hulk Agents of SMASH and thats a bad bad thing. I encourage everyone to watch an episode of Ultimate Spider-Man to get the feeling of what I mean. However we just need to get them to make a series with the same maturity of Avengers Earths Mightiest heroes, that TV series may be better than Batman the Animated Series honestly.

As long as they don't go the ultimate Spider-Man root, I'll be ok with this.

Obviously, the way Disney XD handled Spectacular Spider-Man to make way for Ultimate has me VERY nervous about Clone Wars. It had been my hope that Clone Wars could continue into the early Empire transition period after Order 66.

Yes I have, doesn't come close.

Difference of opinion.

Dave Filoni has been hinting for a couple of years that CW was drawing to a close. This just confirms it.

I acknowledge that Ultimate Spider-Man can be quite childish at times but I love it. As a Coulson fan, it was a highlight to my week.

Of course, what I would really love would be a live-action series paired with the SHIELD show on ABC.

Ultimate Spider-Man is still on my DVR timer but it is sometimes very painful to watch. That episode with an ill Hulk was brutal.

Filoni has already stated season six is already into production. The series is already near it's natural end. Six seasons to cover three years of storyline is pretty good.

'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' Likely to Leave Cartoon Network After This Season

When the animated spinoff ends its five-year run, Lucasfilm owner Disney is expected to move the show to its Disney XD network

The Clone Wars likely are coming to an end -- at least on Cartoon Network.

Lucasfilm’s spinoff TV version of Star Wars has been a solid performer on the Turner Entertainment-owned Cartoon Network for the past five years, but that run almost certainly will end after the current season in the wake of the deal for Disney to acquire George Lucas' company for $4.05 billion.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Turner, a division of Time Warner, has the license for Star Wars: The Clone Wars only through the end of the 2012-13 season. Each year it has renewed its deal with Lucasfilm, and reps for both companies say they will make a decision on continuing the show around the end of the season.

In reality, Disney is very likely to move Clone Wars to one of its own networks, most likely Disney XD, an advertiser-supported cable TV channel targeted at boys.

In a conference call Wednesday after the sale of Lucasfilm was announced, Disney CEO Robert Iger said he sees big possibilities for Star Wars content on the Disney/ABC owned TV channels. He particularly cited Disney XD as a perfect home for a Star Wars show, though he stopped short of mentioning Clone Wars.

Clone Wars has been one of the highest-rated shows on Cartoon Network, even with a move to Saturday mornings this season. For the month of October, The Clone Wars ranked No. 1 in its time period among boys 9-14 and posted double-digit gains across kids and boys vs. last year -- kids 2-11 grew by 46 percent, kids 6-11 by 34 percent, kids 9-14 by 64 percent, boys 2-11 by 45 percent, boys 6-11 by 36 percent and boys 9-14 by 72 percent, according to a Turner spokesperson.

At times, Clone Wars also has aired on Turner’s TNT network and Adult Swim.
Cartoon Network retains some rerun rights to about 100 episodes that have aired over five seasons, but it is unclear for how long. A source at Turner could only confirm the network has the right to keep running episodes at least through 2013.

The CG-animated series of 22-minute episodes is created by Lucasfilm Animation and produced by Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and CGCG Inc., the largest animation studio based in Taiwan.

Clone Wars debuted on Cartoon Network in October 2008 after being launched in August 2008 as an animated feature, which played in theaters briefly. The movie got mostly negative reviews but still grossed about $68 million worldwide (about $35 million in North America). There also are Clone Wars novelizations, video games and toys from Lego and Hasbro and other tie-ins.

The Clone Wars series takes place in the same time period as the Star Wars movies Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005), the most recent feature release.

Cartoon Network’s sister company Warner Bros. distributed the Clone Wars movie in 2008 and has been selling past episodes of Clone Wars on DVD and Blu-ray discs. That is another deal that is likely to move in the future to Disney for home video distribution.

In the wake of Disney/Lucasfilm deal, will 'Star Wars: The Clone Wars' leave Cartoon Network?
by Darren Franich EW/InsideTV

After Disney staged their bloodless coup of the Star Wars universe earlier this week, there’s been a lot of talk about the next wave of movies set a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Lost in the shuffle, though, is the TV show Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the popular prequel-era series which is currently airing its fifth season on Cartoon Network. Cartoon Network, of course, is owned by Turner, which is owned by Time Warner — which is decisively not owned by Disney. That means that Clone Wars is currently caught in the neutral zone between two megacorporations, and its future is not entirely certain. The Hollywood Reporter claims that the series will finish out its current season on Cartoon Network in early 2013, at which point it will likely move to Disney XD, the Disney network so hip that it abbreviates “Extra” with “X.”

LucasFilm owns the series and licenses it to Turner — similar to its former deal with Twentieth Century Fox, which distributed the Star Wars films. When reached for comment, a Cartoon Network spokesperson said, “A decision has not been made about a sixth season yet, and won’t be made for some time.”

And even if/when the series departs Cartoon Network for a potential sixth season, it’s not clear what will happen to the five seasons that have already aired. A source tells EW that Cartoon Network has the rights to the first five seasons beyond 2013; presumably, Disney would ultimately prefer to horde Clone Wars together as a complete package. Then again, it’s also possible that Disney, with an eye on Episodes VIII-IX, is looking to shift the whole Star Wars experience away from the prequel era. Also, per official canon, the Clone Wars only lasted three years, so how long can the show actually last? (Then again, M*A*S*H lasted approximately eight years longer than the actual Korean War, and the Korean War had 99% less lightsabers than the Clone Wars. Conclusion: Clone Wars will last until 2037.)

I can see TCW continuing up to the when VII releases. So two more seasons I guess. It'll be hard to replace as TCW is a big hit. I think a possibility is a SW CGI show base after ROTJ and before episode VII that moves on to fill stories in between the Sequel Trilogy Episodes. Maybe adapt some NJO stories.

Now that would be awesome!!

The Empire hunting down the Jedi/baby Luke.

Though this arc would be more awesome on the live action TV show.

I think you aren't getting what he said. A CGI series after ROTJ. I've been saying for years there are some great stories to tell in the New Republic time frame... including adaptations of existing material. Especially if it's a Rogue Squadron show.

Depending on when the sequel trilogy takes place, I definitely see a series that takes place shortly after ROTJ happening. It'd be a good way to fill-in the gaps of what happened between the two movies & try to introduce younger fans to the old crew.

I'm sure if they start a new series for Disney XD, it will tie into the era of the new movies (aka post-ROTJ).

I just hate Disney XD though...

If and when TCW moves to DX, I don't think we will see scenes like Savage getting his arm cut off, scenes like that will be a thing of the past. :\

I think Disney would allow that, they allowed wolverine to use his claws to kill two dinosaurs even though it was shadowed.

I've said before, especially after watching the arc with Tarkin, I would like to see the show continue past Order 66, seeing the establishment of the Empire, Vader adjusting to his new position, and hunting down of the Jedi. This would also include seeing Obi-Wan adapting on Tatooine.

A show featuring Vader hunting down the remaining Jedi, animated or not, is a license to print money. That show would be sick. Even animated, they could put it on ABC.

The show's been a hit for 5 years & there's been no loud parental complaints, so I don't see why Disney would change anything. If it's broke, don't fix it.

If you guys are worried because of stuff like 'Ultimate Spider-Man', then don't; that's all on Marvel, not Disney.
