Default Future of the Expanded Universe

Since Disney got the rights we have yet to get any news regarding the comics going back to Marvel, or the other Eu materials like books and video games, expecially considering the new trilogy will most likelly retcon much of the EU post-Jedi stuff.

Now that EA is doing the next games they announced a Star Wars: Battlefront

Which seems to be a reboot of the original series of games, i see Disney keeping the live action films and TV canon, but not most novels or comics, only possible exceptions may be Splinter of the mind's eye and Shadows of the Empire.

With the new 'Battlefront' I don't know how much of an influence Disney/Lucasfilm has on the title. Since JJ and his team creating a new whole new era of Star Wars, how does that affect the games and such? And how would it be different from the usual EU stuff?

My theory? They're kinda like rebooting the EU (or whatever you want to call it) without contradicting what Disney is doing with the property. So in theory, the new EU will live on, but with more restrictions.

What do you mean with more restrictions? Doesn't it have the same restrictions of the old EU where they tried to not contradict the movies? I don't see how the situation is that different except retconing the past EU stories

With the EU post-ROTJ, it was a giant sandbox in which many authors had freedom to do whatever they want (in most cases).

The only time when the EU had restriction is common sense stuff like Shadows of the Empire or The Force Unleashed. But even The Force unleashed was just ridiculous. It works strictly as a game but once you actually think about and try to tie to the movies, or whatever, it's just obnoxious.

I see, i wonder which EU stories will remain part of the new EU, if at all, Shadows of the Empire is usually in a higher level of canon than other SW projects since it's a multimédia one, it had Lucas's involvement and he himself said he would have made it a movie if he could go back in time.

The Clone Wars had Lucas's involvement too and it did retcon some other elements of the EU, they're even doing a kind of sequel show with Rebels, but what about the original clone wars show? It had some of the most important parts of the war and it introduced the characters of Ventress and Grievous.

When it comes to the Expanded Universe now i think they should reboot everything except the G and T levels of canon, in a way the tv shows the salvation of the Prequels period and they helped bring many kids into the franchise.

I don't know what they will do with older tv specials and shows like Holiday special and Droids

New updates:

http://starwars.com/news/the-legenda...-new-page.html

In a way i'm glad some stuff is still canon, but in another i feel like this makes the franchise carry some dead weight, i think they should have only kept the tv shows as canon.

It means that the EU is dead no matter how they worded it.

Really? I had gotten the idea from there that the EU wouldn't become non-canon, and that the next projects would be tighter in continuity.

The EU is non-canon completely. Starting with Rebels its a new continuity that supposedly be tighter. The EU can be used as a resource but until that happens those stories no long exist in the backdrop of the Star Wars films unfortunately. No Thrawn, no KOTOR, no Mara Jade, no Force Unleashed, no Legacy, etc. But pieces of different stories can be used and re-enter canon but to the Story Group's own desires so largely could end up being different characters or stories just with the same name. Their basically is two Star Wars universes now. The old EU is being branded as "Legends."

Here comes the Disneyverse...

And The Clone Wars is still canon from what i heard, along with the original films it's the only story left from the previous continuity. I hope they eventually shed more lights on the 2002 Clone Wars show that explains much of the CGI one, as well as the large Shadows of the Empire project.

The Clone Wars microseries is not canon, the 2008 Filoni series is. Shadows of the Empire is non-canon, for the moment. The two Clone Wars series contradicts each other in many ways so it makes since they can't coexist.

This is how I look at it, copied from my post at theforce.net

"Something I have begin thinking of myself the past couple of days is the differences between the two universes that causes some cool stuff to happen in my eyes. In "my" version of the "Legends" EU The Clone Wars is the Tartovsky microseries and everything from the multimedia project while all the stuff from the 2008 CGI series is part of the new EU and doesn't exist in the "Legends" EU(I really don't like using the Legends term). To go even further I like the idea of considering the old or Legends universe to be the same universe where Han shot first and the prequels don't exist, but the novelizations do.

That is just my take on it, I don't mind the idea of two Star Wars universes to enjoy when I think of it that way. To reiterate it is easy for me to see the Clone Wars in both universes represented by the two animated series. The Tartovsky Clone Wars is part of the Legends EU alongside the Dark Horse CW comics and other novels from the multimedia project up to ROTS and the Clone Wars of the new EU is the Filoni Clone Wars series and perhaps its tie-ins. As someone who likes both Clone Wars series but didn't like the steps on canon the Filoni series seemed to do constantly its easier to separate them completely now with essentially to me there being officially two Star Wars universes now."

I know the 2002 cartoon is no longer canon, but it did introduce General Grievous and Assaj Ventrex, if you take it out of the equation, those 2 appear out of nowhere in the 2008 show and everybody suddenly knows and has an history with them.

Yes but the terrifying Grievous of the micro-series and novels/comics of that time is quite different from the cowardly Grievous of both ROTS and the 2008 series. I'm sure the NewEU will explain more about the Ventress and Grievous of the 2008 show.

Grievous also appeared out of nowhere in the 2002 cartoon. His back story was explained in of the comics, not in the cartoon. And his origing is pretty much stated in TCW's episode "Lair of Grievous" which contradicted the EU's origin BTW. But I will agree with you on Ventress. Hopefully the nuEU will giver her an origin along with some more resolution.

Just read about the whole new canon rules yesterday. It's a shame all of the existing EU is non-canon cuz now all we have is: TPM->AOTC->TCW->ROTS->Rebels->ANH- >EST->ROTJ-> VII-IX.

That means Darth Plagueis, The Force Unleashed games, The Old Republic games, Clone Wars, etc. gets thrown out the door. Plagueis was the best EU novel I've read and it finally explained everything about him and Palpatine and now it doesn't even matter (though the character himself is still canon).

All I know is the better not screw things up!

With Grievous out of nowhere i mean a proper introduction, Clone Wars did that, showed how he first came in contact with the Jedi, while in TCW he already has an history with them.

I frankly think it's a good thing that The Force Unleashed and Old Republic is no longer Canon, the first one had heavily inflated power levels, while the stories set in the distant past were used as excuses for the writers to do their oun takes of Jedi vs Evil Empires, making the technology more advanced the more you go to the past and history way too repetitive.

Canon or not, I have a feeling the Solo kids are gonna make it for the movies.

Shouldn't this sub-section be changed? since the EU no longer exists? Probably have the name changed to Star Wars Legends

Well the "new" expanded universe is going to still be the expanded universe. Just not in the same universe as the previous EU, its only the old EU that is being labeled Legends. There will be new EU content that isn't Legends.

Yeah, but they said the new content would be canon along with the movies and tv shows, instead of being divided into levels like the previous Star Wars Canon was.

Yes but the new content outside the movies and tv shows will still be "Expanded Universe" material. Just not the same EU as before.

Personally I could care less what Disney says, the EU is canon to me and the prequels are what never happened. Though I wouldn't mind everything Darth Caedus and beyond being reworked...
