Good lord, am I massively drunk. I just got back from our belated Halloween party. Why am I even posting right now?

I'm so totally covered with make-up, I wonder if I can operate the shower properly. How long did it even take me to write this post without or minimal grammatical errors?

Damn I'm thirsty. And I feel like throwing up. Double damn....

Try holding your breath, sometimes it works, or drink water & stick close to the bathroom, just in case.

Actually you're right he was an urban legend and a feared lunatic. Kinda like Slender Man. He did have his own cult-following later on, but so much of those urban lore fuelled the imagination of later pulp characters, especially ol' Bats is just damning. You had Spring Heeled Jack appearing across sensational papers as though it was real, and on the other end you had those inquisitive jobless detectives like Dupin from Edgar Allen Poe's tales of ratiocination where the rational protagonist directly addressed those unbelievable tales and often solved them. With Batman you have a bizarre union of the two.

To go back to The Shadow, or even the Scarlet Pimpernel, one of the most recurring motifs was that these "legends" were a part of a larger cult, or a leader, and they seldom wore actual masks. The Pimpernel was a rebel and he'd blend into high society as one or more of those rich-dudes and you had no clue he was really this leader of a cult. One of the biggest "revelations" of the Pimpernel was when it's revealed in a ball that he's really one of the characters you thought was an ordinary guy, not unlike the way Ra's Al Ghul was revealed at the end of Batman Begins. And, in addition to that, the Pimpernel was also a part of a cult where the "persona" of the Pimpernel was passed on through the years, like the Phantom (which is why I always believed that "Ra's Al Ghul" is "immortal" because the title is passed on). Even Spring Heeled Jack was rumoured to be a bunch of rich snobs who did it to scare people (and strangely it's always rich people, lol). The point was that they really captured everyone's imagination. As urban culture grew we lost track of myths and that very speculative nature that these legends bring about, with Batman it's just been more properly spelled out. After all, even today he's portrayed as an urban vigilante wanted by the police.

It's one of those myths people swear by for curing a hangover, like a pot of coffee or a bloody mary. Also, bacon sandwiches are delicious.

The greasy food works wonders for a hangover. Or you could do hair of the dog.
