Default The Killing Joke Animated film officially announced

Batman: The Killing Joke is coming to animated film 2016 -- Just announced by Bruce Timm at our JL: Gods & Monsters panel! I think we can all agree this is great news, as long as Conroy and Hamill play their parts. Without those 2 this animated film will lose a lot of what it could be

Even if, for whatever reason, they didn't plan for Hamill.... he'll force his way in. That's the exact thing he wants to end his run as the Joker on, so I can't see them getting away with not having him. Hamill will probably blow up Timm's phone to get cast

I only hope that they don't cut out too much of the darkness... sure, the DKR animated film was PG-13, but I think TKJ is actually, arguably darker.

Now I only need to see animated films of the Vampire Trilogy, a three-part Knightfall, and a new version of DKR with the narration put back, and I'm satisfied

Hamill said back in 2011 that he was done with voicing Joker after Arkham City. Then this year he shows he's not done with Joker since he came back for a huge role in Arkham Knight. And he's doing a DLC for it, too.

This has been his dream Joker role for years. I can't imagine anyone but him being first choice to do it.

They better use the colors from the original version...

As opposed to the new edition they released a few years ago?

I wish they'd re-release the original version instead of the recoloured one. I prefer the mad acid trip of the original.

I'm looking forward to this adaption. And I'm particularly interested in how they'll pad the story out to reach a decent runtime, and how they handle the last frame with Batman and Joker in the rain. That's the part that draws a lot of debate.

Remember the recent theory Batman was strangling Joker to death?

Yup. The new edition just makes it look like a standard grim and gritty batcomic, IMO. Like AnneFan said, the original coloring is like a mad acid trip, and for me, the original coloring makes the story feel like a perverted version of a silver age comic book.

I agree. They made it unnecessarily gruesome in some places, too. Like blood coming out of Joker's eyes when he emerges from the chemicals;

Yeah that theory is a bit dumb, since this story is part of the continuity, it wasn't just some elseworlds/what if one-shot.

I am concerned because this recent thing we have going on with women in comics. We cannot sexualize them, no violence must be brought upon them, no fear, they cannot be put in danger. And we all know what happens to Barbara in this story. Do they have to tone it down? I wouldn't doubt some self-righteous critics and or activists will outright attack it without paying mind that this is based off a 27 year old comic that dates back to the late 80's.

Alan Moore meant for it to be a one-off. He never meant for it to be in continuity, other writers did that.

I still have the original that I bought for like $6 back in 1993 laying around my house. I refuse to pay for coloring that robs the art of it's character. That wacky acid trip landscape complemented the Joker's warped mindstate quite nicely. Juxtaposing vivid and dynamic colors with scenes of pure horror. It really enhanced the atmosphere in that mad fun house at the end as well. I don't care that the new edition was Bolland's original intent because the truth is it ended up coming out the way it originally did and IMO it was a beautiful accident that helped the book's effect in the long term.

I didn't even know they recolored it until someone told me about it a few months ago. I looked up some panels online, and thought it looked boring compared to the original.

Oh wow that IS very different. Yeah think I have the new re-print. Last time I read Killing Joke was the original and was maybe 10 years ago, so been a while and forgot. I dunno I get it, it look really fun BUT purple Batman? Is this video game (1989) Batman? hehe

The recolouring is awful. It completely ruins the atmosphere of key scenes.

I don't personally see the point in direct animated adaptations of comics. What are they for? You get the same images and the same dialogue. Are they for people who are too lazy to move their eyes from panel to panel?

I finally read this comic and I’m glad they’re making an adaption, but they should add more meat to it if they plan on making a film. I’d love for Conroy and Hamill to reprise their roles for movie too.

Well watching it and reading it are too completely different experiences. Plus, it's always interesting to see what they add. Like in TDKR when Joker slashes Dr. Wolper's throat with the broken coffee mug.

Even though I enjoyed TDKR and B:YO. I'm bored of DCA mostly producing direct comic adaptations. And wish DCA produced more original Batman stories. However TKJ was one I've been wanting to see adapted for the sake of Hamill returning as the Joker. It's been a dream project for Hamill for years. And that alone is why I'm interested in this project.

No surprise but Hamill is eager to voice Joker for this movie;
