Post Why LOTR instead of FOTR?

Ummm, why is it being called Lord of the Rings instead of Fellowship of the Ring? We know that TTT is coming, as is TROTK. Are we gonna have to call 'em all LOTR?

Or, maybe we'll call the next one:

LOTR Returns
LOTR Episode 2
LOTR Sauron Strikes Back
Gandalf Meets Saruman
LOTR Part 2
LOTR The First Sequel
LOTR I Still Know What Frodo Did Last Summer

I just thought it was because the story is going to be split into three parts...

Yeah, it is. But since it's three parts, don't you think people should use a different name for each of the three parts? The title of this first part that's coming is Fellowship of the Ring. The only reason to call it Lord of the Rings is if you're referring to the sum of all three parts. Maybe that's what people are intending. I myself have used both terms. I just wondered.

Besides, I'm kind of stuck on the quirks and intricacies of naming things tonight.

I noticed. I also nticed that, on the website, it's clearly named The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the RIng.

What's the problem?

They're not reffering to the first movie as "The Lord of the Rings," they're reffering to the entire trilogy as that.

The movie is still called "The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring."

It's like when people say "Star Wars" instead of "Episode I" or "Episode II" and so on.

It's because not everyone knows what The Fellowship of the Ring is, but everyone knows what Lord of the Rings is.

Yeah, and I'll have a headache when the Two Towers are relesed. TTT. I use LOTR when referring to the trilogy and then use the subtitles or whatever when referring to each indivisual part. Or at least I try.

Everyone is correct, but I think Kevin's answer hits the nail on the head. That must be it.

And I will continue to use both terms also, at least until we have to start saying LOTR:TTT.

Hey, I just thought of this. When The Two Towers is released next Christmas season, I wonder how many will make the mistake of thinking it's about the two towers where the mass murders took place in New York.

Its just cause its the first one and introduces people to the seris. Much like Star Wars: A New Hope, hardly anyone calls it a New Hope, its just Star Wars to most.

Three books. In one story. Look at it that way.

Well to put it succinctly Lord of the Rings or LOTR is the name of the book in the three part series. Fellowship of the Rings or FOTR is the first book, The Two Towers or TTT is the second book in the series and Returnm of the King or ROTK is the last part of the series.
