It's beginning to sound like a broken record at these Olympics. The Chinese anthem blasts out again and again and again as its athletes ascend the podium.
The biggest match of all at these Olympics isn't in the pool or on the parallel bars, it is on the podium where China and the U.S. are battling it out for top spot in the medal count.
The Cold War is long over, but anyone watching these games can see that the U.S. and China are in an Olympic gold war.
While the U.S. medal haul has been consistent in recent years, China has rocketed from nowhere to top of the heap. Just look at the numbers:
Gold Medals:
1988: U.S. – 36, China – 5 2000: U.S. – 37, China – 28 2008: U.S. – 36, China – 51

The USOC doesn't just look at gold medals, they look at overall medals.

The United States doesn't have anything to worry about. Even if they trail China in the overall medal count after the first week of the Summer Olympics (as they did in London) the United States Olympic Committee knows full well that they will win the overall medal count, because of sports like Track and Field, Beach Volleyball and Basketball.

China poses zero threat to the United States in track and field and until that time comes, China will never beat the United States in the overall medal count. China at the most would get 4 to 6 medals in athletics (race walk and probably shot-put) while the United States will get at least 25. The biggest threat to the United States in track and field is Jamaica, not China. Track and Field is one of China's weaker sports. In London, Hurdler Liu Xiang was China's best hope of receiving a medal in the sprint/hurdles. He never made it to the finals.

Until the Chinese conquer track and field, they will never defeat the United States in the overall medal count at the Summer Olympics. They might be able to sneak in for bronze in basketball and volleyball if they put on a great effort, but they would at most get 2 medals in either sport (they could get four in Beach volleyball if they are lucky). But next to swimming, track has a lot of medals to give out (143 medals). China won 6 medals in London in track and field. The United States won 29 in track and field.

So what if China dominates in gymnastics or swimming? The USOC knows that they will win the overall medal count because of China's weakness on the track.

As I said, as long as China poses zero threat in track and field, China will not surpass the United States at the Olympics.
