They say they are treating this like it is the first Superman movie ever made, but I think there is an undercurrent to this poster and the themes of this film that is also very aware that this isn't the first Superman film. If you think about it, the way the public seems to be reacting to Superman in MOS is rather similar to how the general public views the iconic image of Superman - with cynicism and skepticism. The world finds it hard to believe in a goody, goody hero who does things for selfless reasons. In the film, that leads to distrust and fear. In the real world, reduced sales and declining popularity. This poster, despite its flaws of execution, thematically represents the filmmakers' task. Superman is on trial. They need to make him seem relevant again and make people believe in him again.

I think the blur is done to draw the eye into the center. The soldiers are blurred on the sides. Supes is sharper and features the red accents. It's really cleverly done to stand out, not to mention it's not the generic poster we're used to seeing for genre films so it will stand out when displayed in theatres. I think the fact that it's thought-provoking too whilst answering no questions. 'Why is Superman being captive by the military?' it forces people to ask?

I am thinking the same thing. I looked at it yesterday and even lightened up the picture on my phone to try to match it. But the guards look different and even cavill neck is smaller. So it looks restaged and in that case done well. It still doesn't forgive that esthetically it looks poorly done. The same focus into the center you mentioned could have been done without taking away the sharpness and adding blur and shadow.

But it is what it is and I'm happy with the response from the non fans for the most part. I just wish that with all that fake countdown crap, using and toying with the real fans (us/we the loyal) they would have given us something to make up for it. We were the ones that this was for right?? Who else was out there working for it? "Share this batman dvd release and unlock a MOS exclusive". Exclusive for who? Now we are just supposed to be grateful. The funny thing is, in true Superman form fashion we have been...

If they had just released "poster" without all of that we would have loved it bc it's something after 6 months of nothing. We still would have complained lol but the response would have been more appreciative.

WB seems to now exactly what fans of other movies want and give them way more then they should. When it comes to us however... we are like the teenage step children. I know I'm venting for nothing and the trailer is around the corner. I'm just sick of being laughed at and sometimes it feels like the ones who are making this movie are the ones egging us in the face. That countdown really pissed me off I guess. I didn't mean to write all this but I guess that's what's cool about forums. Sorry guys. This is years/decades of a frustrated fan right here.

but, at the end of a day, Superman is a hero, a symbol of hope and light. not some "villain" in shackles.

if WB only released promo images and posters that show Superman in dark light, or give off a moody, somber, depressed vibe, you'll give people the wrong impression ( unless, of course, the movie really is like that ).

you have to play up the heroic side of Superman, too.

give us at least one powerful, epic image of Superman looking heroic..........

I'm sure we'll get plenty of heroic Supes in marketing when the time comes. Right now, what they need to sell is the idea of Superman as a more complex character than he usually appears.

The image of Superman that the general public is used to is the one of him as a "figure of light" - but this poster is a reminder that he inhabits a dark world. I'm glad they're going for this angle early on.

I wouldn’t want people to think we're doing for Superman what we did for Batman. It's very much Zack’s film and I think people are going to love what he's done. I think it's really remarkable to take on that character. Superman is a completely different character than Batman. So you can't in anyway use the same template. But David Goyer had this, I thought, brilliant way to make Superman relatable and relevant for his audience. Zack has built on that and I think it's incredible what he's putting together. He's got a lot of finishing to do on that. Superman is the biggest comic book character of them all and he needs the biggest possible movie version which is what Zack's doing.
