From the diagram of all the team members in Avengers #1, it sure looks like they'll possibly break them up into smaller teams that one of the main Avengers (besides Hulk and Black Widow) will lead.

The dotted lines make it look like Widow will be associated with Thor's team, and Hulk will be associated with Hawkeye's team

I just noticed that. I'm also wondering about the prominent circles ending IM and CA's team since it look like they may have some big name members joining them.

i've been impressed with this relaunch so far. stand outs for me are thor and deadpool. haven't been a big fan of those characters before, tried out their new books and whilst both are totally different in every way imaginable, they both flick my switch. hope this quality continues and doesn't trail off like with dcs new 52.

Agreed. Avengers #1 was, without a doubt, the best Avengers issue to be released in almost ten years. (Remender's Secret Avengers deserves an honourable mention though!). Hickman proved that he's miles above Bendis and I'm excited to see where the title heads! Anyone know who all was shown on the last page? I've been reading Avengers since 1998 but I didn't recognize everyone... maybe some new additions/different costumes?

Anyway, Marvel NOW seems to be a success.
Uncanny Avengers = A-
Avengers = A+
Iron Man = C (I actually kinda miss Fraction. Never thought I'd say that!)
Thunderbolts = C (Get a new creative team and this could be an 'A' title).

I'm quite optimistic about New Avengers. The future looks bright!

Hickman's Ultimates was probably the best Avengers story since Busiek. So any Avengers fan should appreciate it, Ultimate fan or not.

Too bad it's not the Avengers....it's the Ultimates.

To-mah-to To-may-to.

But seriously, the way Hickman wrote them was more like movie Avengers, rather than raging douche bag Avengers like Mark Millar.

Look at post #44 by Chewy and he identified all the heroes on that page.

That's just how Hickman writes. Read it like 4 more times and it'll make sense.

It'll probably require a couple more issues to really make sense. But Hickman hints at a lot of potentially awesome stuff in this issue. I'm looking forward to this series, and I'm really glad it's coming out twice a month because I want to see how Hickman's ideas pan out sooner rather than later. That'll also make the parts that drag (which Hickman usually has at least 1 or 2 of in each of his series, in my experience) go by that much quicker.

I hated that it opened up with the movie lineup but loved that it ended differently. Have no clue who alot of the symbols in the map are though

I couldn't guess a couple either. I'm very curious about what the connections on that diagram mean. At first I thought it was people each central Avenger chose to add to the bigger team, but then Tony says that he and Cap are the only ones recruiting, so Thor and Hawkeye and the Black Widow having dots connected to them wouldn't make sense. Hyperion is listed under Thor and Captain Marvel is listed under Cap, so now I'm wondering if Hickman's going by shared characteristics, i.e. Hyperion as a powerhouse who could sub for Thor, Carol's leadership experience and military discipline making her a suitable sub for Cap, etc. Should be interesting to see how all of that pans out.

Oh, and I'm actually okay with the Hulk on the Avengers now thanks to his portrayal here and in Waid's series. The Hulk as he is now--a weapon Bruce is finally taking responsibility for and pointing at bad guys to try and squeeze some good out of his curse--actually has a solid basis for being an Avenger, unlike the whiny, uncontrollable sad sack he used to be. Great characterization change.

All that said, it was kind of pathetic that the easiest way to take the Hulk out is still apparently to just mind-control him and throw him at Thor.

The big 6 are abvious right?

Connected to Cap are Captain Marvel, Spider-Woman, Falcon and Shang-Chi (I think).

Thor - Hyperion, Captain Universe and Smasher

Hawkeye - Manifold

Iron Man - Wolverine, Spider-Man, Cannonball (I think) and Sunspot.

Not only obvious but they are explicitly spelled out in the book under the map. Its the additions that arent

I like how Hulk just gets a big "H." No one's really had to come up with a symbol for him, I guess. Radiation, maybe, but that's already taken by Hyperion.

I'm very intrigued by the Ying/Yang, Dark/Light, Idealistic/Realpolitik dichotomy that Hickman is going with in Avengers and New Avengers. He claims that if you read them both you'll understand the "whole story". The Avengers is the clean public face and New Avengers is the behind the scenes dirty works. I'm keen to give it a try.

I mean it has to be better than Bendis right?

There shouldn't be a sanctioned behind-the-scenes dirty work team, let alone a sanctioned team that CAPTAIN AMERICA is on. That's the antithesis of superheroism. At the very least, make it a cloak-and-dagger team that operates in the Avengers' best interest without any of the "good" Avengers' knowledge.
