If it has amazing Steam pricing deals, then I would definitely consider getting one.

![]() What’s the Xi3 Computer Game System? The easiest way to describe it is to call it the “Steambox” that everyone has been expecting for some time now. source:Siliconera Last edited by zenith16; 01-07-2013 at 09:50 PM. |

Running on Linux. At least somebody is figuring out how to tap it for console use.

Didn't know the new XBox will be named XBox 8, thought they'd give it a new name
I'm not in a hurry to buy their system, 50/50 it will be another system with its RRoD or something similar And what's the proposed controller design?

Are you saying there will be variant Steamboxes or that there will be more consoles like this?

So in laymans terms, whats this thing supposed to be? A way to play *insert AAA title here* that you've purchased through Steam on your tv without the need to purchase a gaming PC?

Well, it is a PC, but it's a PC made specifically to be hooked up to a TV to play games on with a controller.

Sweet. Sounds like this will be a day one purchase for me then. Have they talked about the controller at all?

Gabe talks about it some in the article I linked, but the "Piston" prototype that was posted above has eight USB ports on it I believe so you can use whatever PC-compatible controller you want probably.

This is cool and I may purchase it. Im not sure how well it will do mainstream tho. Its gonna need a successful major exclusive title to ensure its survival similar to what Halo: Combat Evolved did for the first X-Box. If it is only for streaming games I see it failing. Not everyone has a fast enough connection to download/stream a whole game so for them this thing would be useless. It takes me 3-4 hours to download a full mainstream game and during that time my internet lags so I cant say im pro download only.

There is a first time for everything, and the market isnt quite ready for download only. We like convenience and instant gratification. Three hours to download a game that you can be locked out of for various reasons, drm, and no physical copy or a thirty minute drive and a physical copy. You can see where they are gonna lose some sales. I mean I dont know anyone who doesnt own at least one physical copy of a game. Downloading and streaming is a great alternative but it doesnt seem to be to the point where it is the only option. Now if the system allows external drives then that has added potential.
Steam has had a great business model so far. Getting in the ring with hardware giants like Microsoft and Sony is a whole other ballgame.

It does look good, but it's best not to judge any of this stuff one way or another as it's just prototype.

I don't like the sticks being side by side like that, but if I can just plug up a 360 pad to this then it all becomes moot anyway. Can not wait to hear more on this, I'm stoked.
