Here's an unpopular opinion...

Memento isn't that good. Brilliant concept and plotting, of course, but I found the character, performances, cinematography, score, art direction and overall direction to be mediocre at best.

I find Inception, TDK, TDKR, Prestige and BB to all be better made films.

Haha yes. That's the one. Nah, is not that creepy, is more mystery/suspense with some funny moments from Steve Zahn.

I honestly think that my comic book fanboy status has made be biased toward Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, but if I was to remove that, I would probably have to admit that The Prestige is probably Nolan's best overall movie.

I list it like this:

TDK
Inception
Memento
Batman Begins
Prestige
TDKR
Insomnia
Follwing

I don't think TDKR and Insomnia to be his weaker movies, though still good. I think TDKR suffers from the opposite of your issues with Memento, but I don't think your issues that you think hurt memento actually hurt the movie. They weren't specatacular, but the selling point of the movie was and is always the plot. I do feel as though the plotting of TDKR does hurt the movie, though I'm not as harsh on it as others.

While I do not find every plot problem to be a plot hole like others, I just find some roles and some character actions to be rushed, like Alfred leaving Bruce the whole movie the way he did, while I don't find Blake finding out Wayne's identity to be a plot hole (I honestly was sold by Blake's speech), it does leave a lot to be desired and I wish he was able to be given better detective skills.

TDKR made me appreciate TDK more, because I realized that in the latter, that's Batman at his physical peak.

TDKR just placed a shadow over the entire trilogy for me. TDK is still my favorite of the series.

Batman at his peak never seemed like it.

And you just illustrated my most loathed aspect of the general populace's thought process on films; all other artistic aspects are rendered inconsequential when compared to plot.

CConn, you know better than to assume that of me. I thought that the presentation of Memento's presentation was better and not as big a dealbreaker as TDKR's plot (though none were huge dealbreakers).

Anyway, I don't assume them inconsequential, but I for think that plot is one of, if not, the most important aspect of a movie. Just because you don't think so doesn't make other people wrong.

I think part of the brilliance of that movie is the fact that you are almost just like the character in every way. Yes, the plot and the way the story is told is the main way to make you feel like the character (not knowing what happened before). But I believe the bleak cinematography, the lack of a distinctive score, and the overall unsettling tone also helps a lot at building this world of the unknown that the character lives in.
Even the other characters are very ambiguous. Hell, the story itself is. I might be wrong, but I think all those are creative decisions made by design. And that's perhaps what I like most about the movie, the mystery surrounding the past, present and future of that guy.

It's a case to case basis. Plot may be very important for a political thriller, but an Italian horror film? Not so much.

One critic said it best that repeat viewings only gave a better understanding of the plot. Viewing experience isn't enhanced.
