People need to remember too that this isn't just a reboot of a franchise that died. This is the SECOND reboot of a franchise that died. Audiences have seen a "modern update" of this franchise within the last decade, and it left them cold. Which means the audience is likely even more jaded and skeptical than they would be if this were just your usual reboot of a franchise that ran itself into a the ground. This is a reboot of a reboot that never got off the ground.

With that in mind, if the movie is generally well-received, I think WB would be very happy with TASM-esque numbers (even with much smaller WW numbers). Probably happier than Sony is, lol. If MoS were able to make TASM's domestic take ($262m) and, say $200m less than it's international take (so about $290m), that WW total ($552m) would be damn good for Supes. That's the number I'm currently rooting for it to hit, but I think even that number will be far from a cakewalk for it, so any talk of a billion just seems so...out there to me.

They directly reference moments, lines and full events from Superman I and II. That doesn't make it a reboot whatsoever.

SR was kind of a sequel and kind of a reboot.

It was both.

It had the continuity of a sequel with the rejuvenation and purpose of a reboot.

Pretty much. I don't consider it a reboot at all, the only thing it was trying to do reboot wise, was re-introduce Superman in film. As for the film itself, it was a sequel to 2 films from the 80's.
Man of Steel, is our first genuine reboot.

I see it as a reboot in the same way XM:FC was a "preboot": It chose what continuity from the previous franchise it wanted to follow and what it didn't, and used that vague established history to launch a new set of stories with a new cast. XM:FC was technically a prequel, but a prequel whose continuity pieces don't all fit, and whose purpose was to launch a new X-Men series starring different people.

But SR was even more of a reboot than XM:FC, because the people in the original X-Men movies will still be making appearances in the new incarnation of the franchise, while that was not the case with SR since the old cast was actually replaced. SR was trying to introduce a new cast in a very different visual world and make it at least seem modernized. Basically, it was attempting to establish a new Superman franchise for a new generation, one that adhered to some - but not all - of the continuity of the old one. Watching the trailers, the audience didn't know "hey, this is a sequel to Superman 2!" They saw it as a new Superman movie, with new Superman actors, in a completely visually re-imagined Superman world. So for marketing purposes at least, it was a reboot of Superman, imo.

Hell, the new Star Trek reboot adheres to continuity more than SR did, because at least in the new ST franchise, the events of all the other ST movies still happened, just in an alternate (but in-canon) timeline.

The funny thing about "Franchise Reboot," though, is that it's an informal term without a dictionary definition which gets used pretty freely and loosely, so it's still open to interpretation. I personally consider any attempt to revive a dead franchise with a new cast and creative team - any attempt that's not a straight-up remake, anyway - to be a reboot of sorts.

I dunno.

SR definitely wasn't a period piece.

The technology featured (airplane, weapons) were all very modern.

The tech was contemporary, but the film clearly presented a nostalgic, romantic world, sort of like Raimi's New York where people seemingly lived in modern times, yet stuck in the sixties at the same time. I imagine Snyder's Superman will be placed in a thoroughly contemporary world, with all its complexities intact.

SR tried to continue a story from the eighties and put it in a modern age, and it really didn't work out that well. Some parts felt modern, others didn't. Idk, the whole film felt like "been there, done that."

Thank you, that's what I meant when I said they "attempted to modernize" it - that although the movie was supposedly meant to take place about 5 years after Superman II, they still transplanted the story into a much more contemporary setting. That doesn't mean I thought they succeeded in modernizing it, lol.

I've said it before but it's simply amazing just how wrong Singer got it. Batman Begins had pretty much changed the superhero movie genre forever a year prior and then we get Superman Returns... a movie so stuck in the past it was embarrassing to watch. A sequel, reboot, reboot/sequel... to this day no one knows what the hell it was

What's sad is that we all knew something was wrong the moment they unveiled that picture of Routh in the suit. It's amazing how they missed the mark so bad. Everyone who was involved with that project should be shot.

Saying that everybody involved in the production of a film (which is incredibly time-consuming and requires a lot of hard work) should be shot is just a plain silly statement, to say the least.

YOU are the one who needs to calm down.

I think I was very calm, you were the one talking about people being shot over a Superman film.

You're 2nd draft comes off much better.

Yeah, I voted $600M in the poll, but I really expect it to land somewhere in between $500M-$600M.
