That's what I thought too. He is basically always in pain, so the mask feds him with anesthetics that make him impervious to pain. I thought that worked to his advantage in the sewer fight. He doesn't feel Batman's hits the way it should because of this. Some poster noted that in the final fight, when Batman starts to hit Bane's mask, he becomes more brutal. I thought it worked as a clever analogue to the venom he takes on the comics.
