There's an update to that story:

http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/29/m...view-gdc-2013/

Quote:
During the presentation the day before, another journalist asked if Unreal Engine 4 would work on Nintendo's Wii U -- a console that straddles the line between next-gen and the current one in terms of horsepower. "Hahahaha, no," he responded, which sent a wave of laughter through the room of journalists. But that's not technically true, he admitted the next day, walking back his gaffe. "You heard the stupid gaffe yesterday about the Wii U," he said. "If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can! If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen." While that game might not look as pretty as it would on a "true" next-gen console, the new engine is scalable to a variety of platforms, including mobile.

The only thing hte Wii U has unique to it fo multiplatform games is the tablet but even thats not going to be too unique with the PS4 being to replicate the same functionality with the Vita. I guess it has its price on its side and its first party stuff bc I dont expect it to get strong third party support by the PS4/next Xbox's first year anniversary

I've also said that the best thing Nintendo has been good at over the years is being innovative in terms of ideas. However, Sony usually uses improves upon those ideas, while Microsoft creates new tech for it.

But I truly believe this will be Nintendo's last console. They are strong in the handheld market, but they've been behind for a long time in the console game and its only a matter of time before games like Mario and Zelda become tiresome and can no longer carry the systems.

If Wii U sales don't pick up after Nintendo puts out some decent software for it, I could honestly see them pulling the plug like Microsoft did with the first Xbox.

They didn't really pull the plug on the Xbox until the Xbox 360 was released.

Nintendo still has cash so they'd have at least 1 more chance to make a new console in the middle of next gen to replace the wii U. To succeed I think it would need to be a jump ahead of PS4 & 720. Staying 1 gen behind on tech won't work next time. The non-gamer casuals have come and gone and they have the device that met their needs with the original wii and buying another machine was never part of the deal. Unless you include something equally revolutionary to motion control (which is very hard to do EVERY time) & it catches on like fire again, while staying affordable.

Many Nintendo 1st party titles don't need or benefit from super graphical power to the same extent as the newest & latest tech 3rd party games which while a big benefit on the games front means that the need to keep buying new consoles is not as strong. They have to create the situation through 3rd party support next time where a neutral gamer can buy only a Nintendo console and be completely satisfied.

Grinding in video games sucks. And I'm not talking about dancing or skateboarding.

Even in JRPGs I prefer to have to come up with the best strategy to counter and defeat an opponent rather than mindless level-ups and brute-forcing a victory.

The infestation of level-ups and grinding into almost every genre and platform now is disappointing, but people evidently just love to watch bars fill up and see numbers increase. Some publishers even insidiously sell advantages to decrease or skip the grind in their video games.

Five Years And Nothing To Show: How Doom 4 Got Off Track

Quote:
Doom 4 is in trouble, and has been for quite some time now, according to multiple sources. Though publisher Bethesda tells Kotaku they still plan to release the highly-anticipated first-person shooter, Doom 4 has gone through at least one major reboot over the past few years, and sources say even today, five years after development started, the game is not even close to complete.

Saw that on Doom.

I really want to see what Doom 4 is like.

XP bars everywhere! I said a while back that it won't be going anywhere with the chance to use microtransactions. Now even if a grind is not a natural part of the game why not introduce an artificially long one just so x% of people pay to avoid it/get through it quicker. It seems most guys here surprisingly have no problem with it but I see XBox friends who barely have enough money to buy games paying for this ****! (on Gotham City Impostors & Gears Judgment for eg)

I'm surprised CoD hasn't gone in for it full barrel. They could make an absolute killing.

Been over a week since the release of RE6 on PC
Which should I get first, and why? RE6 or Tomb Raider Reboot?

TR. The response for that has been overwhelmingly positive whereas RE6 got panned by critics and gamers. It'll be probably worth a try eventually but if you had to choose between the two, go for the one thats actually the better game and that would be TR

Hopefully, no screen is too dark

I agree, Tomb Raider is awesome. I haven't played RE6 outside of the demo, but I think the fact that its pretty much being given the "Clearance Bin" treatment is pretty telling.

Did Capcom damage the franchise that much? From 5-6, you seem like you lost hope in the their overall handling of the franchise

I've only played RE6 & on that basis I'd say Tomb Raider.

No one likes RE6 that much, what a downer
Oh well, since the reboot is developed by the same people of Legends, and that game is really good, I'll play Tomb Raider reboot first

Yea dude, i think they did. I mean RE6 is a mess. Its has ZERO direction. Just a hodgepodge of horrid gameplay.

You should like Tomb Raider tho. Crystal Dynamics nailed that one man.

I don't outright hate it. The clunky gameplay just hasn't improved enough from the earliest games and it was forgivable back then due to how good the other elements were. I feel RE is getting overtaken by other top franchises now. Tomb Raider on the other hand looks like they've made a real effort to improve the game & bring it up to 2013 AAA gameplay standards.

And a side note on RE6, developers should be careful when putting quicktime sequences into games, especially when the difficulty for them scales with the game's difficulty setting. I have no need to get good at those things. Unlike a difficult regular part of the game, beating (or failing multiple times) a difficult QTE is not fun, holds no achievement value for me & is nothing to do with enjoying a top game in this day & age. If you put them in to help with immersion during a partial-control transitory section fine, but don't make it a staple part of the gameplay.

The hodgepodge felt like mixed blessing in the demo
I think it might be fun if played for crazy more than seriously

Man, they should stop using QTE, it was never fun to go through
